Yup you can buy a game key from PlayNC.com and download the software. Although if you can wait a day or two I'd suggest buying a retail copy from an online store as its much cheaper.

I bought a retail copy from a reliable online store for £17.99 ($30?). To buy an online key was £29.99 ($50?).

Lots of games actually seem to cost more to download, which in my opinion is a bit of a rip.

Or if you can wait for the Good vs Evil edition, you may still get a better price than download, get some extras not available in any of the current editions and the CDs or DVD will be updated up to Issue 7, saving you much download time.  Here is from the official forums and it was confirmed by a red name(Cricket):

    -

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Exclusive in-game bonus items!
    Jump Jet Prestige Power
"Pocket D" VIP Card Teleport Power
    Exclusive Hero and Villain Costumes

Full versions of both City of Heroes and City of Villains
DVD bonus digital items: City of Heroes comic books, Prima Issue 7 Strategy Guide update pack, movies, game trailers, screenshots, and more!
Exclusive two-sided poster featuring Paragon City and Rogue Isles maps
Twelve character slots per server (four additional character slots)
All content updates including Issue 7: Destiny Manifest
NCsoft game trials and other offers
First month of play included *
    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I haven't read anything on a release date yet though or if they will offer an upgrade solution to current users.   As long as it is around $30, I would like to pick it up, if I will be able to use it to upgrade my account that is.

*Sorry, read further into the thread.  The details of what is or is not in the box has not been confirmed yet(hoping the Jetpack stays).

    hmm, nice offer :)

would you make a guess at release date? In a month? or two?

I'm guessing that they'll release it with Issue 8...
This way they can have a huge marketing blitz and also get the hero content on par with the villains.
As for the release date of I8, no idea.
They've hinted Sep-Oct but I'm don't think they can make it.

Its so they don't undercut their retailers.

Cricket said they haven't released any info on it yet.    I'm willing to bet it'll be released in time for the holiday season.   Ho Ho Ho.

This is the real reason they arent putting out an expansion, per say. Many people before the launch of CoH wanted both Heros and Villians in the same pack, well here you go.

(not to derail this thread, but this era is why all the folks that say PvP was an afterthought are full of crap. PvP was planned from the get go, just not implemented)

Yes! you can buy it online no need for you to go for a local store. I bought mine at gamersloot.net and they will provide you a link wherein you can download the game. I have a great experience from them. =)

    hmm, one other question.

If i buy (for example) the city of heroes box/net version - will i get all the abilities (ie, super bases etc) and be able to make villans as well?

I did a short CoV trial a while back and was able to make heroes as well...

  • tutetute Member UncommonPosts: 299
    Access to bases requires CoV.

I wish I had details to the Good vs Evil edition because I hate to see you waste money on a downloaded version.  As an example, about 3 months back I got the Collector's Edition of CoV for $19.99 from Circuit City(not to mention shipped to me for free, talk about an awesome deal), not the regular editon but the one with the extras.  Anytime I have visited CompUSA, I always saw a copy of CoH/V for $29.99 or less depending on the sales.  But if you are looking for something to fill your time and are having trouble finding it in a store, I can understand that too.  Good luck.

It's been a week so I suspect you made your decision already. But I wanted to mention that Amazon currently has either City of Heroes or City of Villains for $20. Which is basically $5 for the game since it has a free month included. If you order something else along with it, you even get that free shipping thing Amazon likes to throw in.

I should add that they have the card available for $21.48. Get CoH and the bonus card and that's the game with 3 months for $41.50. Which is less than I paid for my last 3 months, and I already have the game. ::::09::

I would also point out (and this is arguably an exploit) that if you have a retail account for CoH and it's attached to a trial for CoV, you have both active, including bases. It's only really saving you $5 (as explained above) but it's worth knowing.
