You know, I actually wouldn't have a big problem with uniforms, but I don't think they really remove distraction. I mean, one person said something about how members of the opposite sex were distractions, or something. Well... I don't believe that. Unless you're a horny little thirteen year old, they're not distracting unless they're running around naked.
I mean, I know I can't do my work if I'm bored out of my mind, and I also know I would be if things at my school were like they are at yours, Murais. I mean, hell, I don't do much at school now, but It's not really because I'm distracted, because I've been sat down in a room alone before and told to do my work, and I just sat there for a couple hours. Fact is, most of the work the schools give you is busy work, and you don't learn anything all that often. I don't know about other, but I, personally, would rather be doing nothing exciting than something boring. It all makes sense if you follow this chart that I have in my head, but explaining it with no visuals would be hard as hell, so you'll just have to trust me on this one.
I actually work better when I'm around people who're doing the same work. Well, some people, that is. Last year, I got up and left the class because they put me in a class with someone they specificly said they wouldn't... Anyway, yeah, like... Last year, I was supposed to be doing some science work, but I'd basicly just set all of it down and left it there for quite some time. I mean, it wasn't interesting, why would I care? But this girl that I was kind of friends with was also doing the work, and she knows that the work I actually do is usually 'A' quality, so she asked if I wanted to pair up with her for the project. We both worked on different sections, and all the work got done in no time at all. I mean, sure, that's not really how it's supposed to be done, but I learned as much doing it that way as I would've if I'd done it myself, only in less time, and it wasn't so boring.
Basicly, what I'm saying is: People will always find distractions. Removing some will only make them focus on others. And if a little skin distracts you to the point where you can't do your work, you really don't deserve the grade you'd get if the person wasn't there, anyway.
Oh, and my biggest problem if uniforms were implemented at my school is the color. My school's colors are gold and blue, and I don't like either of those. I'd be fine if they were green, silver, purple, yellow, tan, black, or hell, even brown! But blue and gold? I'd sooner stab myself in the thigh.

I did too, for 8 years. Maybe that is the reason I hate it so much.
Yeah, well, that would've caused a school shooting, if it were me. I mean, hell, I'm not violent, and I don't want anyone to get hurt, but there's nothing wrong with takin' out some kneecaps before you paint the walls with brain, right?
(Edit: His point was that it was a public school. Therefore, you can't really compare it to the hell you had to endure.)
Yea, public schools and private schools are much different and you know your going to be wareing a uniform and go to the school because you want to. To throw such a dress code at kids that went to public schools there whole life is just asking for a problem.

Can't deal with the problems at school? Is it stressing you out? Too fu**ing bad. That's called life. Can't deal? End it now.
Originally posted by Blurr Many jobs require you to follow a dress code. You'll just have to get used to it. I mean, having to tuck in your shirt and wear pants that fit properly, is that really so bad?
I have a job and im being paid to work and wear what im asked to wear, and all my clothes fit properly.
If the schools don't want kids looking like they're "gansta", then I'm fine with that. Why does anyone need to look like a thug to go to school?
And those schools are free. That's a huge deal. I'd wear a giant banana suit every day if they let me go to college for free.
I honestly don't see what anyone is complaining about. It's not even a uniform apparently, and a uniform wouldn't be that bad either. What you wear is not as important as what you learn.

rofl so would I, but even if we follow this new dress code we wont be getting anything free.
Well, you will, but it's the same stuff you got before, so the effect is lessened.
Seriously, though, I know it's annoying, but it's not that big of a deal. I mean, sure, the tucked in shirts thing would annoy me, and I'd like to be able to wear the same pants, but, I mean... *shrug* If that's the biggest problem at your school, be happy.

Yes, I have, for the first 9 years of my schooling career (I said that in one of my earlier posts). I've seen Both sides of the fence. Of course people will always find distractions, but the point we were debating in the first place is whether or not it will kill the kid to wear slightly shorter shirts and slightly tighter pants. Nobody is being robbed of their originality here, and all it is being used as is as a safety precaution.

From my personal experience, the first thing that most girls look at when you meet them are your shoes and the second is your watch. Get a nice pair of shoes and a nice watch and you'll be fine. Besides that, girls that judge you only by how you dress are precisely the girls you want to stay away from.
It's kinda funny. From early on and up through high school, the whole 'school' thing isn't cool to kids. It's something they dread, they find it boring, etc. They get upset when teachers put more rules on them and give them work to do.
Then after they hit the college level, it does a complete 180. There are very little rules, and people like going to school. School becomes incredibly important over the space of that summer you make the transition from high school to college. Interesting, eh?
I guess it's at that point they realize if they don't go to college and do good, they're gonna be stuck flippin burgers the rest of their life, hehe.
In the end it's not really that big of a deal.
As far as the females, well, heartless has it right. Any girl who judges you based on the clothes you're wearing or how fat your wallet is, is a ho. Incredibly shallow, and definately not worth your time.

People in college also realize that if they piss off the teacher they can be kicked out of the class, lose the money they paid for it, get put on probation or worse, and have to make the class up.

Originally posted by Wiru Ok, well i go to a public highschool near boston, going into the 11th grade and there is a new dress code mainly for males saying that baggy jeans and long shirts are no longer allowed in school, using the exscuse that they can be used to get guns and weapons into school. We now have to even have our shirts tucked in. To make this clear, there has never been a shooting stabbing, or anybody killed in my school. I do live in a urban neighborhood filled with gangs and violence and such but there has never been nothing more then a pain ol' fist fight in my school. But im posting this here to see what you guys think about this and to find out if they are able to even do this to kids that go to public schools. Is there anyway i can fight this? Using a law or something as a defense?
In my school we get sent home if we have the smallest whole in our pants, which really sucks because I have no money to go out and buy new pants, being that I have a single, out of work, mom who can't exactly support me enough to go buy clothes...
(If there are any grammar nazi's out there can you tell me if that was a run-on?)

Originally posted by Khuzarrz You f*cking whiney american's. What the hells the problem? At least you still have SOME freedom. Us brits have strict and exact uniform in almost all schools, and jeez, we're not even allowed piercings generally (by the way, if your school - to all the brits this is - allows you to have more than single ear piercings, they're actually breaking the law! Interesting eh?)... You shouldn't be whining, you shouldn't be fighting it. They have legitimate concerns anyway - though yes, it is probably just a guise for making you look smarter... But christ, where's the problem?! Just dress as they ask, but push the boundaries a bit each day to let them know who's pulling the strings, and the second you're out of school, get your baggy jeans and untucked shirts back on... What exactly were you planning on doing when you left school and got a job? Taking your restaurant manager to court because he wanted you to wear a bow-tie?! Taking the boss of your office to court for making you wear a smart-casual suit?! Either do what they say or just cry more in a corner, somewhere dark where I don't have to hear about it ^^
Oh and btw, Columbine had a very low history of violence, and no reports of knife/gun crime within its gates. NYC hadn't been bombed before 9/11. Precedent has no case here, it's completely imaterial, as this is about closing routes for such activity to happen in the first place. Have some sense.
So having a dress code is supposed to stop some degenerate kid from carrying a hand gun up to the entrance and blowing away a security guard and contunuing on through the school? that is even if they have a security guard or metal detectors. In which case if they dont....they go straight to class and cap a teacher or whoever they want. Or...do it in the parking lot before class starts for the day. Rules wont stop trash from doing what they want.

Same to you ^^ Hahaha
Cheers!
