My computer keeps restarting...

I'm not a genius on computers or anything, so I need a little help. I've already tried changing the settings so it doesn't automatically restart, but it does it anyway. Also I tried to delete a shortcut to a WoW test server installation (it wouldn't install), but it said "Cannot delete, may be in use by another person or program.

Ok a little more detail required.

Is it re-booting at random.... like from the desktop with no programs running ?

Or is it at certain times with certain software running ?

    When did it start ?

Has it always done it or has it just happened recently ?

There are some obvious things to check based on your answers, but one of the prime causes of instability is bad RAM. In anycase if you give us some answers to those questions, it may help in diagnosing your problem.

It is rebooting with programs running, though I'm not sure which one was causing the problem. I tried using system restore but it rebooted during the time I was restoring it... I recently just changed my RAM settings (I have a video card that uses shared memory), maybe that could be part of the problem. It has happened since yesterday...

Well one easy question I ask anyone with computer issues is...

"what was the last thing you did before the problem started happening?"

If you made changes to RAM and video settings yesterday Id say we are creeping close to a possible cause.

Try going into your BIOS and choosing the option to "Restore BIOS Defaults". That will "unchange" any changes you made that may be causing the problems. It certainly sounds more than a coincidence that you have changed RAM settings and now its re-booting, Id say its related.

If you cant even run a system recovery without it rebooting, then its about 100% a hardware or BIOS setting issue.

Thanks very much, however, I still can't remove this damn shortcut from my desktop. Any idea how to get rid of that? I tried deleting it but it said it's in use by another program. I tried closing down all my programs (except for the system and network ones) and it still didn't work.

Ergh no thats a weird one....

You could try going CTRL_ALT_DEL and going to Task Manager and Processes and turning off all process that it will allow you to turn off, then try deleting it again. This way you know for sure nothing is running that could be using it...

Beyond that... hmm... read Microsoft.com knowledge base

update every single driver, and check if you have any yellow marks in the computer hardware manager and install the drivers for them.

    enjoy.

    it worked for me :}

if non of the above worked, change your RAMS.

How long has this been happening?

Try going into Safe Mode, and when that "warning" message pops up asking if you wish to restore to when Windows was working do so. You can "fall back" quite some time. Pick a date you know when everything was working fine.

Keep in mind any installed progs after that date will be lost. You will be "going back in time" so to speak.

Nah it's not a network card, I'm using a Linksys adapter to connect. BTW I tried the System Configuration Utility I think it might work. Thanks all for the help.

So when his computer starts, nothing will load... nice...

Just reboot, hit F8, go into Safe Mode and go from there.  If you're still having issues, format.
