AC2 is financial success for very different reasons. There is another thread on those forums covering those reasons.
There's 1 million threads all over this site. Please post the link to this thread you claim shows how AC2 is already a financial success. I would very much enjoy reading and dissecting it.
Why do you care so much if it is a financial succes? Do you work for MS or Turbine? Are you afraid they'll sack you because they won't be able to afford you if AC2 isn't financialy succesful?
When life tastes like lemmon, take tequila and salt.
When life tastes like lemmon, take tequila and salt.
I can't find mentioned thred here, maybe it was different forum. Anyway here is simple explanation.
Lets say AC2 Development cost was ~10mln$. I personally think it was nowhere near that number but for the sake of argument we can say that.
Lets also say AC2 sold 50k copies of the game and average subscription rate for first 12 months was 30k subscribers.
50.000x40$+30.000x12x13=6680000$
That number indicated Turbines are in red but lets not forget what turbine gained apart from subscribers hard earned cash. They have Turbine Engine.
The same network and graphics engine will be used in MEO. Only this cuts MEO development costs by half or more. MEO might wipe out MMORPG market, hype is huge and expectations are really high If they play it right they will be in black first month after relase.
If they screw this one I will be first to start bashing them on every message board out there but as for now, AC2 is a golden goose for Turbine and this golden goose is supposed to give them alot of golden eggs in form of MEO subscribers.
And no AC2 is in no means beta for MEO, AC2 is independent product and it will be in black itself soon as well. Popular belief says MMORPG "shelf life" is 5 years. After five years on the market if current trend stays AC2 will bring Turbine nice profit.
Ah btw I belive Turbies have another project in works, AD&D MMORPG (correct me someone if I'm talking rubbish) and guess what engine will be used in this one.
============================== And besides, like it or not, people do try to "win" massively multiplayer RPGs. The rules of engagement are something like this: * If there is a status bar, make it grow bigger * If there is a number, make it higher * If it moves, either get a mission from it or kill it

It is very easy to estimate teh cost of AC2 (even though they seem to have an extreem dislike for posting their numbers)
EQ cost 5 million to make.
Planetside cost 10 million to make
SWG cost a solid 20 million to make
EQ2 is costing a solid 20 million to make.
EQ, SWG, and EQ2 all have one thing in common. ALL of them created their very own game Engines.
AC2 also created its own game engine. (As profiled in the magazine coverstory.)
AC2 easily cost 10 million to 20 million to make. One can even settle on a solid 15 million.
Lets also say AC2 sold 50k copies of the game and average subscription rate for first 12 months was 30k subscribers.
Big problem here! AC2 never sold 50k copies. During Beta, in which they gave away FREE beta CD's in a certain major computer gaming magazine, they STILL had trouble getting enough players to fill up all servers to stress test them.
At most AC2 sold 25k copies. Go to any computer store, any GameSpot store, any CompUSA store, and you will NOT see AC2 the MMORPG being sold, or on any shelves. (And it's not because they're sold out either LOL. )
I know for a fact AC2 once had 12,000 accounts. This was back when AC2 still posted their server numbers. And the numbers were falling.
And AC2 most definatly NEVER had 30k continous subscribers from release to 1 year after release.
50.000x40$+30.000x12x13=6680000$
That number indicated Turbines are in red but lets not forget what turbine gained apart from subscribers hard earned cash.
Cut your numbers in half and you have a likely estimate of AC2's Gross profit . A solid 3 million. Remember, AC2 cost at least 15 million to make.
Cut that number in half again and you have a likely estimate of AC2's Net profit. A solid 1.5 million. I'll even go out on a limb, just to make things easier and simple, and say a solid 2 million. Remember, AC2 cost at least 15 million to make.
They have Turbine Engine.
Yes they do. But guess what? There is the SWG engine, and the one and only Ever Quest 2 engine. Both destroy the Turbine Engine. EQ , in the MMORPG world, has the most recignizeable name. Their engine is far, far, more likely to sell to other gaming companies.
It gets even better, many newer MMORPGs are on purpose using kinda older engines from other games that have been successfull already. See Ultima X Odessy. They don't want Turbine's engine.
The same network and graphics engine will be used in MEO. Only this cuts MEO development costs by half or more. MEO might wipe out MMORPG market, hype is huge and expectations are really high If they play it right they will be in black first month after relase.
So you're saying MEO is nice, and will rule the MMORPG market, because it has Hype and high expectations? *cough* the exact same story behind DAWN.
Also the game engine is a major thing in a MMORPG, but going by history, game features, game mechanics are what really make the MMORPG. See Ultima Online with it's uber-outdated game engine. Also AC, and EQ which both have outdated game engines. They are still around, still making a true profit.
*ahem* MEO is still in its Vaporware stage. And if it some how makes it to Beta, it will be 1 year or more from now. By then it will be far too late. All the current releases will be up to their upteeth expansions, and many of the soon to be released MMORPGs that you see listed near the lower left of this here webpage will have been released.
If they screw this one I will be first to start bashing them on every message board out there but as for now, AC2 is a golden goose for Turbine and this golden goose is supposed to give them alot of golden eggs in form of MEO subscribers.
AC is the "golden goose" for Turbine. AC2 is the "could've been, should've been" for Turbine AND MicroSoft. Don't let MicroSoft off the hook! I blame them even more than Turbine for AC2's financial failure. Marketing failure. Etc....
If MEO, which is not listed on the left side of this here page, nor mentioned anywhere at MMORPG.com, nor mentioned at any other major gaming site, which means no one has really heard of it, and that its "hype" isn't as present as many might hope..... if it does fail, I personally will not bash it. The market is already saturated. The MMMORPG market is about to become over-saturated.
And no AC2 is in no means beta for MEO, AC2 is independent product and it will be in black itself soon as well. Popular belief says MMORPG "shelf life" is 5 years.
Thank you very much for agreeing with me on all of this.
After five years on the market if current trend stays AC2 will bring Turbine nice profit.
If AC2 is able to eek out an existance for 5 years, it will be from being sustained from the still profitable Asheron's Call. I say this because by 1 year from now, the Tolkien-themed D&D MMORPG market will be even more super-saturated than it is now. Think AC2 is doing bad financially now? Just wait until 1 year from now when EQ2, WoW, Lineage2, Darkfall, and many, many, many, more get released.
I personally have my money on Lineage 2. Only because it is a Korean company, and if they try releasing a shoddy product, their game DEVs really do risk getting hanged in public!
Ah btw I belive Turbies have another project in works, AD&D MMORPG (correct me someone if I'm talking rubbish) and guess what engine will be used in this one.
Again, VAPORWARE.
(Vaporware: 1. A game that never reaches release, and fades away. Stays in planning stage forever then fades away. Stays in Alpha stage forever then fades away. Can even be said of a game that stays in beta stage forever then fades away...... but most games that reach true beta get released no matter how ready or not ready for release they are.)( Two of the most famous examples of Vaporware are - Ultima Online 2, and Dawn.)
And again, at this stage, any other projects Turbine/MicroSoft have in planning stages, will at best be relased 1 year from now. Far too late and behind the massive pack of other MMORPGs that will be out by then.
What AC2 really needs is this:
For their parent company MicroCrap *ahem* MicroSoft to stop pennypinching, and INVEST some real $$$$ into AC2. Even now AC2 has a chance to reach 100,000 accounts, and be just as successful as AC1.... IF... a real effort is made to invest in it, support it, by it's owners.
I can't find mentioned thred here, maybe it was different forum. Anyway here is simple explanation.

First of all source of those numbers please. Serious source not something like my brother has a friend whos wife mum works with friend of guy who knows a "donkey kong" developer and he said it costs blah blah blah to develop "tetris".
EQ, SWG, and EQ2 all have one thing in common. ALL of them created their very own game Engines.
AC2 also created its own game engine. (As profiled in the magazine coverstory.)

Big problem here! AC2 never sold 50k copies. During Beta, in which they gave away FREE beta CD's in a certain major computer gaming magazine, they STILL had trouble getting enough players to fill up all servers to stress test them.
AC2 sold about 50k copies in US only, add to this european market, 7 american servers and 3 european servers. all were equally occupied at launch. to those 50k you should add at least another 20k in europe. About half of those subscribed after their one month free subscription expired.
Show me your official source and I will show you mine, untill then its your word against mine.
At most AC2 sold 25k copies. Go to any computer store, any GameSpot store, any CompUSA store, and you will NOT see AC2 the MMORPG being sold, or on any shelves. (And it's not because they're sold out either LOL. )
You cant buy it in europe either. Month before relase I prepaid AC2 in my local store. For month after relase they could not get more copies. Next shot of copies was sold in one day. They didnt have AC2 in store since.
I know for a fact AC2 once had 12,000 accounts. This was back when AC2 still posted their server numbers. And the numbers were falling.
And AC2 most definatly NEVER had 30k continous subscribers from release to 1 year after release.
I never said that 30k people paid for a year, I said that on average they had ~30k subscribers every month. But lets lower this number to 20k doesnt make that big difference really. AC is not supposed to bring big profit.
50.000x40$+30.000x12x13=6680000$

First of all source of those numbers please. Serious source not something like my brother has a friend whos wife mum works with friend of guy who knows a "donkey kong" developer and he said it costs blah blah blah to develop "tetris".
Smedley tried his pitch again. He pointed out that programmers at other companies were already working on virtual-world games like Meridian 59. And while he didn't know it at the time, Electronic Arts was already working on Ultima Online. He got the green light: EverQuest was a go. Smedley hired McQuaid and Steve Clover, two ace game programmers who were slaving as corporate systems administrators. Within three years, the small San Diego skunk works grew into a team of 56 developers and one of Sony's most expensive game projects, with a development budget approaching $5 million.
That's where Smedley comes in. A tall man with a broad forehead accentuated by a receding hairline, he loves his games so much that he has a satellite dish on his fishing boat to keep track of their progress. Galaxies is his biggest project to date; it cost an estimated $10 million to develop. Smedley is betting on its success.
Each year, the company throws off enough cash to fund the construction of another world, like the upcoming $20 million EverQuest II. By leveraging the technology and code already written, each successive world could get cheaper to build.
Thats just pure guess, IMO this numbers are WAY off. Again show me source then we can talk.
Why don't you buy the issue of Computer Gamer Magazine? Ahh... too late now. But you're suppose to have been a long time AC2 fan? As well as a real MMORPG gamer!
It was on newstands 1 month before AC2's release until 1 month after AC2's release.
-> Since SWG ended up costing 20 million (more than their estimated 10 million which should make ya happy = SWG had to be really successfull to generate a true profit. )
(This was posted on the old SWG forums.)
-> Since EQ2 costs roughly 20 million to make.
-> BOTH SWG and EQ2 are among the most newest generation MMORPGs. Meaning, they created their game engines (with graphics 100% on par and EQUAL to the graphics in AC2).
-> Judging by the cost of SWG and EQ2,
-> AND judging by the very informative AC2 two page cover story in CGM, it is very safe to say AC2 cost 20 million to make.... but I cut a bit of slack ... 15million.
Big problem here! AC2 never sold 50k copies. During Beta, in which they gave away FREE beta CD's in a certain major computer gaming magazine, they STILL had trouble getting enough players to fill up all servers to stress test them.
Show me your official source and I will show you mine, untill then its your word against mine.
I've made an effort to post numbers. You haven't even made a 1% effort to post any numbers nor any proof to back up your statements that:
- AC2 has 50k accounts
- AC2 cost *laugh* 5 million to make!?! (the same as.. eh.. ancient old EQ ...?!?)
AC2 sold about 50k copies in US only, add to this european market, 7 american servers and 3 european servers. all were equally occupied at launch. to those 50k you should add at least another 20k in europe. About half of those subscribed after their one month free subscription expired.

So far now it's your word against my 'word' backed by some effort to list sources.
AC is not supposed to bring big profit.
This one quote of yours should end all current and future debate, and posts between me and you. For you to have the mindset that "AC is not supposed to bring in big profit", after-
-> AC2 from the ground up designed their own game engine,
->indulged in a massive 2 page spread,
->in addition to a cover story in one of the largest mainstream computer magazines out,
->did 2 page ads (not 1 page, but 2 pages) in every other computer magazine,
-> Invested MILLIONS on creation, development, which has not been fully returned.
-> Has yet to turn a true profit for the investors, and game company.
For you to say this, and have this kind of mindset, after AC2 did all of this, means you are in denial. Just like the Harley-Davidson guys who make fun of the 'Rice Rockets' , (H-D is owned by the Japanese LOLOL), the Americans who want to rename 'French fries' to 'Freedom Fries', (either way they are not made in France, or come from France LOLOL)
That number indicated Turbines are in red
You are starting to see the light! And are starting to understand my point.
but lets not forget what turbine gained apart from subscribers hard earned cash.
Turbine/MicroSoft must make back their investment money. Then they must make enough profit to pay for the continous overhead costs. Any 'hard cash' made from the sales of the gamebox, has not, and does not, cover all of this. Do you REALLY think Turbine/MS get all the $50.oo you paid for the game box? LOL. Half of that alone goes to the store you purchased the game box from. Part goes to taxes. At the most Turbine/MS get $20.oo from the sale of each gamebox.
Thats pure specualtion, I say it cost 5mln prove me wrong.
I have just done so. See my above post full of links about how much EQ, SWG, and EQ2 cost. I KNOW you MUST agree with me that AC2's game engine is far, far, more advanced than EQ's game engine. And EQ cost 5 million to make.
Now you post proof of where you got your information that AC2 cost 5 million to make.
They are far from destroying turbine engine. Year after relase AC2 has most outstanding graphics on MMORPG market. Only SWG can compete in quality of graphics.
You are correct. After AC2 came out it did have the most outstanding graphics on the MMORPG market - because it was the ONLY next generation one on the market.
SWG has now recently released. And ya darn right it [easily] can compete in quality of graphics.
EverQuest 2 is right around the corner. To be released in 6 months or less.
Even EQ can not compare its fan base to LOTR. In MMORPG world maybe,
Have you ever played EQ? OMG! EQ's fanbase IS LotR!!!!
Hobbits? Halflings? High Elves? Ents? Wood Elves? The Tree Elf city on LotR? Ents? The idea of Female Dwarves with beards? High Men? Ents? Trolls? Orcs? Ents? The Misty Mountains? Rivendale? Gnomes? And much, much, much, more! EQ IS Lord of the Rings Online.... unofficially.
The main reason EQ skyrocketed to 50,000 accounts it's first WEEK of release was because of the LotR fanbase.
but similar like in SWG majority of subscribers came from SW fanbase not from MMORPG background
Bingo! Yes! And? What is your point? It is a correct observation. It was also the intention of SWG. It was SWG's target market - SW fans who have never played a MMORPG before. Nothing new in this statement of yours.
(those with any MMORPG experience staying away from SWG, simply becouse game sux badly).
1. This is purely your opinion that SWG 'sux badly'.
2. Those with no MMORPG experience vastly outnumber those who do have MMORPG experience.
3. SWG's target market was never ever those with MMORPG experience. So if they stay away... no problem. They were never the intended market.
They can not aford it
Do you know what an Investor is? Get enough of them, sell your vision to enough of them, and any start up game company will be able to afford any software. Mythic did this. Funcom did this. ID Software did this. Varant did this. Everysingle game company did this, and does this.
Do you really think the game DEVs theirselves are the ones who cough up the 5 million to 20 million to create MMORPGs?
and it's not for sale anyway. All MMORPG engines that are up for sale basically sux. You can only buy real crappy engine if you want a good one you have to write it from scratch.
So then you are saying the currently best selling game engine, on which the Doom series is based, the Counter Strike, and Halo, series are based, is crappy? Riiiight.
Notice I have always said game engine not MMORPG engine. UXO is using the same engine Doom 2 has used.
In the MMORPG world, game engine is important, but game features are far more important. Proof? UO vs AC2. AC2 has a far better engine, but has never had more accounts than UO even when it was at its lowest number of accounts.
So you're saying MEO is nice, and will rule the MMORPG market, because it has Hype and high expectations? *cough* the exact same story behind DAWN.
Dont compare vaporwave to MEO and LOTR fanbase to some non existant fan base. Read here about MEO
1. The LotR fanbase has already been taken care of and catered to by Ever Quest, and soon by Ever Quest 2. EQ2 will be out before MEO. It will do to MEO what EQ did to AC.
Early bird got the worm. EQ stole the thunder from AC by getting released a few months before AC. Heck, even in the AC2 coverstory in CGM, they mention this almost word for word.
2. EQ = LotR > AC
EQ2 = LotR > MEO
All false assumptions, again read before making false statements.
This tangent, which is indirectly related to the original subject of the first post of this here thread.... was about if AC2 is financially successfull. You and I now agree AC2 is NOT financially successfull.
You are now saying AC2 is financially successfull because it's game engine is planning to be used in the upcoming MMORPG Lord of the Rings Online aka Middle Earth Online aka MEO.
MEO is NOT out yet. MEO will NOT be out before EverCrack 2 *ahem* EverQuest 2
MEO right now is NOT making any money. MEO right now is not a success. MEO thus cannot be incluced in ANY more talk about how financially successfull AC2 is or is not.
Turbine bought back AC franchise from MS. Im under impression I'm discussing with person who doesnt know a jack about what hes talking about. Please do some research before you post false informations.
You need to re-read your own 'research'. You need to learn how to read EVERYTHING and think about everything you read. Here is the link you posted:
"""However this transition will take several months to complete."""
The date on this announcement is December 2003. It is now January 2004. Several months have not passed. 'Several' means more than one. It means "we do not know exactly how many, it could be a lot, or a little".
"""Microsoft will continue to own authentication and billing for the entire franchise for the foreseeable future."""
'The Foreseeable future' is another synonym for 'several months'. To own the authentication means MS runs the show. They control the moneyflow. (Or what little moneyflow there is from AC2 )
Fing a BIG game site without a section about MEO. MMORPG.com is fairy small game site.
Thank you for the links. I've never followed MEO, though I did hear about it back when it was first announced. I will start following it a bit more. I can afford to play multiple MMORPGs at the same time, if MEO is done right, it may even be a nice break from EQ2 whenever I get too tired of it. The info at those links mean the hype surrounding MEO is now 6 months old. Hopefully MEO gets done right and can get released 1 year or so from now. Maybe by summertime 2005. You and I may even be on the same side warring and slaying those future lamers who will say MEO suxxors.
But it still stands that MEO has NOT made any money. MEO has NOT helped AC2 to become financially successfull.
And no AC2 is in no means beta for MEO, AC2 is independent product and it will be in black itself soon as well. Popular belief says MMORPG "shelf life" is 5 years.
Thank you very much for agreeing with me on all of this.
Cool, you had no comment on me saying we are in agreement on this point of mine. Thus -
- We are both in full agreement AC2 is not a financially successfull MMORPG even after being out for 1 year.
- We are in full agreement AC1 IS a financially successfull MMORPG.
- Thus, in answer to the original topic of this here thread, AC2 is worse than AC1 because AC2 is not and has not been successfull.
Ah btw I belive Turbies have another project in works, AD&D MMORPG (correct me someone if I'm talking rubbish) and guess what engine will be used in this one.
You are correct. I have heard about this also many, many, months back. I have not recently tried checking into it though. But again, this other project, is NOT making any money. This other project is in no way helping AC2 to become financially successfull.
Believe what you want. I post for you, as well as for the hundreds of lurkers out there. Let the Lurkers decide.
MEO and DnD Online and any other future projects from Turbine are NOT out yet. They are NOT in anyway helping AC2 become more successfull.
BTW, check this out from your link:
"""Companies to Usher in New Era of Massively Multiplayer Gaming in 2005"""
"""Slated for release in 2005, Dungeons & Dragons Online"""
By then EQ2 will be looking at releasing its first expansion. Heheh.
Check this out from that article at the link you yourself posted:
Players choose and develop a character based on some of the iconic races associated with D&D, including Humans, Elves and Halflings, as well as classes such as Fighters, Clerics, Rogues, and Wizards
The key word is 'ICONIC'. In other words, things commonly, associated with DnD. Ahh... but EQ already beat Turbine to this. Especially with Halflings. Turbine is too late. Replace everything at that link with Varant and EQ2, and you have the exact same thing - DnD online aka EQ2. And EQ2 will be out far before 2005.
Vaporware = not out yet.
But I will give this point to you. Only because I AM a fan of MEO, and DnD Online. There... MEO is not Vaporware. DnD Online is not Vaporware.
But they both have not been released yet. They both have not been successfull yet. They both are not helping AC2 to become financially successfull.
And again, at this stage, any other projects Turbine/MicroSoft have in planning stages, will at best be relased 1 year from now. Far too late and behind the massive pack of other MMORPGs that will be out by then.
I notice you had no answer to this quote of mine.
They are far in development, Dawn from the moment it was announced was branded as vaporwave. Noone knew developers. Every official and self respecting gaming site stayed away from Dawn.
Nahh, Dawn had its fans, and following. It wasn't until 1 year after it's announcement, when nothing new about it was announced, that the word Vaporware was heard.
No one knew the Developers for Dark Age of Camelot, or for Anarchy Online. Or even for Asheron's Call (when it first came out.) And definatly not for Ever Quest (Varant? Get lost Varant! <- SONY told them/Smeadly this 2 times!). None of those games were branded as Vaporware while in developement.
Only the Ultima Online game DEVs and Star Wars Galaxies game DEVs where well known years before creating those 2 games. Lord British aka Richard Garriot and Raph Koster, respectivly. None of those games were branded as vaporware while in developement.
And you are incorrect, one of the largest, most well known, and famous, gaming sites had many sections on DAWN. Have you ever heard of .... Stratics?
Anyway, I will stop calling MEO and DnD Online vaporware. But they both in no way are making AC2 become financially successfull. They both have not made any money, nor true profits.
MS has nothing to do with it. They no longer own AC franchise. Do some research before you post false informations.
According to the information at your link you yourself posted, MS do infact STILL own AC and the AC franchise.
"""this transition will take several months to complete."""
"""Microsoft will continue to own authentication and billing for the entire franchise for the foreseeable future."""
If I own a car. And I'm selling it to you, and it's taking 'serveral months to complete' the sale, who is the current owner of the car?
If I'm in the process of selling you a car, but 'for the foreseeable future' I'm still handling all payments on it, who owns it?
Entico,
AC2 is financial success for very different reasons. There is another thread on those forums covering those reasons.
Back to your original quote that started this whole tangent about MEO, and DnD Online. You originally said AC2 IS a financial success because of MEO and DnD Online.
I AM rooting for MEO and DnD Online to turn out as success stories. BUT MEO and DnD Online are NOT out yet. They both have NOT made any $$$$ what-so-ever.
Thus they both in no way are making AC2 a finanacial success.
Thus AC2 is NOT a financiall success for very different reasons.
AC2, Neocron are some of the best mmorpg's out there yet they dont have meny subscribers..
WHY? Becuse of idiots like you spaming the bords saying that this game sux then i have to take time out of my day to reply to posts like this and reply with the true info.
Then i have to go to every single damn fourm and post how the game really is. this is getting tireing.
Every MMORPG comes out not finished, AC2 dident have a good lauch but now this game in my point of veiw is alot of fun. now go get alife you shlum and stop spaming the bords with your idiodic veiws about the game. You must have me confused with someone else, since I've only posted "negative" comments on just one forum. To shed light on the only MMORPG to be released as a flop, and still be a flop 1 year after its release.

Thats all i have to say
Your opinion means nothing vs what the market's opinion says. This has been re-hashed too much already. According to Mr Reality aka the MARKET.... AC2 is a flop. Ac2 is not financially successfull. Even though AC2 is now 1 year past release.
All I've done is simply passed along what the Market has said about AC2.
You can not reason with xplororor. He (she) belives that angels and god are aliens,
Well think about it. Was God, Satan, the Angels, etc... all born on Earth? Well?
he belives aliens set up their bases on the moon and are shooting down our probes sent to Mars. Check out other thread on this forum if you want to have a good laugh.
Despite your attempts to further pull this discussion even further off track, back to the subject of this thread.
"Why do people say this is worse than AC1"?
- After 1 year of release, AC2 is still nowhere near financially successfull.
- After 1 year of release, AC2 is nowhere near having 100,000 accounts.
- After 1 year of release, no one, neither die hard fans of AC2, former AC2 players, and non-fans of AC2, can find out exactly how many accounts AC2 now has as of December 2003.
- After 1 year of release, AC2 is a bona fid.. FLOP.
Best way seems seems to be ignoring him.
ps. Sir Bruce - only one place on the net where you can find independent information about MMORPG subscription numbers - gives AC2 aprox 50k subscribers in July 2003.
Now you're trying to claim credit for my sources? LOLOL.
BTW, Sir Bruce himself goes over why his information is only good for an idea of where a MMORPG stands. He goes in to extreem detal about how he gets information for each MMORPG. Some information is more valid, and closer to the truth, than information about other MMORPGs. (He has to guesstimate on some, while with others the information is readilly publically available.)
You're only proving that AC2 is worse from developers point of view (less accounts).
For all us gamers AC2 is an excellent game well worth playing. I can't compare it with AC1 because I haven't played first part. But I can say for sure that AC2 is a great game.

If you like AC2, you will be e s t a t i c when you play AC1. The graphics are good enough to be enjoyable. The game play, game features, game content, nuke AC2.
Plus Asheron's Call, aka AC1 aka AC... IS a financial success! Even after 1 year after its release, it was doing FAR, far, twice better than AC2 is doing.
I was going to write lenghty response but then I saw this:

AC1 just feels more alive, not only are there a lot of people, but probably the friendliest people ever. But it has a few things ac2 dont, vendors for one, houses that are something else then just looks, (the fact that you can not enter any house in ac2 makes you feel like an unwelcome ghost), and houses you can own. A very VERY large array of player made tools and progs that at least riplkes the fun you get out of this game.

I played ac1 for 2 years...waited for ac2 release in Nov of 02. Started playing it on release...lots of bumps along the way but had fun never the less. The two games are totally different, but still fun in there own ways. ac1 is very difficult at first due to character creation and flexiblity...ac2 is easier with limited character flexibilty. ac1 has dated graphics but great content...ac2 has out of this world graphics but limited content (but it is getting better). Bottom line is that both games have there flaws and strong points...I recommend ac2 for someone who likes to jump in and not think to much...and I recommend ac1 for the player who likes to plot and put alot of thought into a game. Both games are fun in there own ways...so make your choice based on your style. Enjoy
To those people who say that the under-population problem has nothing to do with how good the game is.... what planet are you on.
Isn't the Entire point of playing a MASSIVELY MULTIPLAYER game that it has massive ammounts of players?
You are deluding yourselves if you think a mmorpg can be enjoyed (for a long period) even though small numbers play it. And make no mistake that the other important factor of an mmorpg is that it capture interest for months or years.
AC2 has captured my attention for the past 9 months and I'm enjoying it more and more. Last couple of patches have added a lot of new content and I started new character to explore all the new quests. And next couple of patches are bringing some major additions (like new crafting system, KvK content, housing, vendors...) which will make the game even better. So I'll stick with the game for at least 6 more months. I'm also quite determined that I will never play a MMORPG which won't have free monthly updates.
About server population; the numbres were quite low but are raising very quickly. I always find enough ppl online to do whatever I want so I don't consider this to be an issue. Besides how does it matter if there are 1000 or 10000 ppl online? You always need only about 5 to 10 ppl to do something. And I've never had problems finding enough ppl for quest or hunt in AC2.

I did beta and then played ac2 for first 3 months. I stopped playing eventually due to fact that rubber banding was driving me nuts. But i loved the game. The ideas and the look ,the feel was great. I had never played ac1 nor will i .
I tried trial again recently (before Turbine got total control) and found i still bounced everywhere .Citys and towns were dead with no vendors still and no houses or towns looked rebuilt ,as we were told they would at the start.
I migh try again now that its improving again .I dont want though, to play a mmo single player, which is what happens so often these days in online games.
Id love ac2 to do a AO and become success.
(BTW whats sadder, whinning at people who play a game telling them its crap OR not whinning at people who play a game you thinks crap but let them make their own choice? Its called free will and tards who rant about others being morons for playing a GAME need a head check)
Yes AC2 had a crappy launch and their paying for it, as well they should. I think the message has been sent out loud and clear.
Anarchy Online had a very bad launch as well, and it's turned out to be one of the best mmporg's out there imo. It's far better than Daoc and EQ.
I have played AC1, DAOC, EQ, AO to name just a few.
What I like about EQ- tons of content.
What I don't like, it take inordinate amounts of time to get anything done in the game. Camping in one spot for exp - yikes
DAOC - what I like RVR
What I don't like leveling is painful!!
AC1 - what I like - alot - its a great game, but having said that I prefer AC2 to every other game that I have played!
AC2 has a ton going for it and can only get better. FANTASTIC Combat, best I've seen in a mmporg. You actually have to think and press buttons for different combat styles and spells, when you stun a mob it actually slows down - u have ot see it to believe it!
Any class can bind, any class can craft a mount after doing a quest at lvl 12.
Players can bind to allegiance halls and teleport back to their "home" hall at any time.
You can for the first 20-30 levels level purely by doing quests and vaults. God I love it! Makes playing so much more fun!
AC2 is much more a grouping game than AC1. In 4 days I had 3 different players of all level 50 or more help me do noobie quests, I have NEVER seen that or experienced that in another mmporg EVER. In EQ, AO or DAOC higher levels rarely interact with noobie players, or help with quests.
Classes are interesting, fairly werll balanced now and have a great set of different skills. Like an attack that is like a boomerang, another one that has snowballs and mudballs. Tons of cool special effects.
Where AC2 needs help.
DAOc has RVR as an endgame
EQ has high end raids
AC2 doesn't have an endgame as of yet, so alot of players play up to 50, which doesn't take long (leveling is fairly easy in AC2 as compared to other mmporgs for the most part) and then complain about lack of content.
Justly so, and turbine seems to be addressing it. Problem is it takes developers 10 hours to develop new content and a player 1 hour to use it. You do the math.
AC2 has no storage, no shared banking, no looking for group tool, poor crafting (which really sucks - considering KVK was supposed ot be about the struggle for getting and keepingresources to craft better gear, houses, etc...
That's it, I really like AC2, it's a great game, with alot going for it and yes it could be better.
New KvK dynamics and new crafting system are coming in couple of months. New quests for lyl 50+ players are also added with each patch so most of the areas in which AC2 is lacking will be improved very soon.

Entico,
AC2 is financial success for very different reasons.
