wow players are a sad breed

this goes to all who are thinking 'geez, everyone is playing WoW, might as well try it': DON´T! I AM SERIOUS!!

i basically quit mmo´s after WoW... and it was the only mmo I tried!

One year after last playing this game I am so happy I quit, I mean the time I wasted on a game... I cant believe there are people who actually wish they had no real life to play a game. They will tell you stories like 'time spent having fun is not wasted time'.... WHAT?? Fun? I call it addiction.

It´s designed to addict you, very much in a way a cigarrette is designed to hook you after a few puffs... at first all is good weee , but suddenly you find yourself killing the same mob repeatedly, and I mean over 1000 times for digital rewards...

I thank the horrible lag...really...thank you Lag.... it enabled me to take the time to re-think my ways.
i never in my life played a game over 1-3 hours (everyday!). NEVER. I was playing over 6 hours, and believe me I wasnt a good player. I mean there is absolutely no skill required, if you have 2 fingers u can play this game.

the game is turning potential great students (kids) into virtual world fanatics, who spend over 10 hours a day playing....playing!!! laughable and frowned upon....

before enlisting into this mindf**k i advise you to take a close look at the wow General Forums. The frustration in there is fascinating. Reading through those forums will let you see the core feelings this game brings out in people. People who play WoW are frustrated, and they will come up with any sort of argument to defend their addiction.

The reason, 1 year after quiting I am writing about Wow is simple. I saw it in the news there are now 6 million people playing it and it bothered me... I am really worried about these people. I really dont want WoW to become the new Lego for kids. The very thought is disgusting. WoW is a creativity killer.

Hope this helps you. Later dudes.

i agree with alot of what you said but I'm getting the impression that you think only wow is like that? pretty much every mmorpg is designed to addict you and hold your interest for as long as possible.

yeah the wow community is the worst i have veer seen in a mmorpg but the game its self has little to do with that, its the Bnet community....its has been awful far before wow ever existed.

yeah alot of people waste their lives and play 10+ hours a day but then again you have the people that spend all their time and money going to bars getting boozed and cheating on their wives just to drive home wasted and potentially killing someone on the road.

i have personally seen someone that had been in and out of prison, was a car thief and a ex drug dealer stay out of trouble by playing mmorpg's.

does that make it okay? no but it sure as hell alot better than the alternative, playing video games is alot better than going out and getting yourself in trouble just for something to do.

however i agree with you about kids not doing as well in school because of these games, while i don't have any hard facts to support this i know just from common sense that it does effect their grades, it would have to wouldn't it?

but then again, that falls on the parents....they need to be a parent on not let their children play video games all day...put a password on your computer and make your kids do homework first, its not brain surgery.

he's exactly right. except that this issue isn't limited to World of Warcraft. Nearly all MMO's (gear-progression based in particular) give off the flavor of addiction. Hell, I attest to it and I even know when sometimes I play too much. It's what makes MMO players different from the average gamer, for better or for worse. MMO's are, to many, a way to express an alter ego within people and for them to experience achievement.

It's sad though, because real life has such better rewards and many never see it.

I have played WoW on three separate occasions.   I enjoyed it very much all three times.

You quit playing mmorpgs after playing WoW and it was the only mmorpg you have played?

That makes you slightly less than an expert on the subject.

Wow is a well thought out, polished video game with a great story line.   So good in fact that it is the most popular online game to date.

I can write a long and intresting reply to this post.

but really, only one thing is needed to be said.

go back to counterstrike, MMO's are not your thing.

Ugh.  You know, I'm one to use the whole '...' to make a point or pass on the idea of thoughts ect., and I'm not new to the idea of using all the internets shortcut terms and all that shiz, and most of the time I don't post with perfect grammar.  But ya know, there's a few things in the English language you kinda NEED to keep.  Like SENTENCES.  And PARAGRAPHS.  All I see is one huge pile of junk that I'm just not going to read through, regardless of whether or not it has good content.

Im going to let this run because the OP does have some valid points.

However I am a current WoW subscriber and like all those who enjoy WoW, we would be a little insulted by some of the things you have posted. So basically to the OP, your points about the addictive nature of MMO gaming are welcome and valid. Your insulting tone is not. Please stay on track

If you played WoW for a year I call that a SMASHING success. Any game that would hold me playing for 3 consecutive months IS a realy good game. You got tired of WoW? stop whining and find something else to play. Sorry to be a bit harsh with you but ... reality check!?

I am the type of player where I like to do everything and anything from time to time.

Meh. I play WoW because it is casual and therefore I don't HAVE to waste a bunch of time on it. I guess I find it fun because I don't play it constantly.

It is a nice break after school before I go to band practice.

wow you come to an MMO board flamming MMOs you do realize you are not attacking WoW you are attacking all kinds of MMOs. That is the idea behind MMOs they suck you into a second life They let you live outside your normal boundaries and that is why we love them just because you have some horrible self-control and couldnt log every once and awhile doesnt mean the 6 million players subscribed right now cant its a shame your fu*ked but I garuntee you most of them are not I have a life I enjoy it but I also play WoW I also play MMOs and I enjoy those as well this should really be in the Pub because your not just complaining about WoW your at an MMO Enthusiast website complaining about MMOs....weak

ok... I apologize for the bad formatting. I´m not sure how to use this, but ei, I am using Enter, and it does not seem to work.

I really don´t want to offend MMO players, I would only alienate you if I wanted that. Consider this a call to arms. Yes I did go back to CS and DoD and only play 30min per day. I got my life back.

Since I only played WoW I´m not sure of the mechanics of other MMO´s. If you want to trade vices and play WoW instead of doing drugs, fine by me. I just don´t see the point: it´s trading vices. Only you are affected. There are thousands of counter arguments for my point of view so I´m not even going to insist on this matter. It´s sad, that´s. Virtual personas are worth 0 in this very real world. One day you just might regret all the lost time.

If WoW, or any MMO for that matter, is designed to addict you, only you can say no...

Sorry if I offended u guys, I posted on this site because it´s a valuable resource for the genre. And I check back once in a while, looking for that perfect multiplayer game that really works for me.

You don't have to try and defend yourself Max, you made a good point in the beginning, saying that people make up several excuses for their problem without admitting they have one.  The responses in this forum are exactly that again in different ways.  I've heard the "mmo ain't your thing" excuse several times as well as the comparisons with shooters like counterstrike.  It comes down to where some people are able to walk away from it after a year, while others walk away for a short while, then come back quickly, some are able to walk away completely, what does this sound like?  Crack, cocaine, Smoking, Weed, Pornography?  I'm not saying that people need to go to some group to somehow think that talking about it is going to help, but I do think realizing that this could potentially be harmful for a person socially and relationally is a very real issue.  I have friends that are obsessed with this game at work and it's clear that they are anything but normal and aware of their surroundings.  If you are smart and excel highly in mathematics (which is where the money is these days) WOW is a trap for you, where you will waste a lot of your intelligent mind into a game that is designed to continue to make you think that you are accomplishing something.  It's a virtual world with virtual success.  Try living in the real world, earning real success and putting your mind in a place where it can benefit from.  My bosses joke around about people like my friends who are obsessed with WOW saying things like "If we give them a couple two liters of Coke and some pizza, they will completely entertain themselves."  So WAKE UP!!!! ...and stop hiding in your virtual world.

Possible ways of breaking out from being a WOW addict:
    1)
    2)
    3)
    4)

I disagree. I knew a great core of people in WoW. It's a huge game with millions of players of all ages and cultures and lifestyles, just like real life. The secret is a good guild. The downside is to do large scale end game raids... you need tons of players... and there are alwyas a few who stink things up. There is alwyas that one jerk and his buds that you ahte but have to raid with. This is where WoW messed up... changing the wholef un feel of the game 1-59 with the 5 man runs to suddenly 20-40 man runs. And PvP is just a mess. Fun, very fun, but not rewarding at all unless you can devote 60 hours + a week.

Addiction of any sort is bad, it could be to something as innocent as reading, i know ive seen it, ive lived that one, almost anything out there is up for grabs in the addiction department. its knowing limits and having a balance in your life. a game is a game is what you must know i think most people in mmo's know this its the few that dont that give people reasons to say that all players are like that. whats the diffrence in playing an mmo to relax than it is to watch tv or listen to music, its just another way for people to accomplish the same thing. the ultimate goal is to relax and have fun. it is also a social event, same as talking on the phone, going to a bar or even chatting to friends online. all of those things are acceptable as long as its not in excess. just thought id add a few points. Im not advicating addiction but saying that not all who play mmo's or games in general are addicts.

I already apologized for the poor formatting, and I did mention I was writing because I read WoW now has 6 million users, and that disturbed me. That said, I have nothing more to ad to this topic. Cya all, and good luck. To the creators of this website keep it up, you got a good thing going here, the podcast is really cool.
