What is with these dumb sports mmo related posts today?
You can't freaking make a sports mmo, becuase it just doesn't make any sense. Well, you could but the player base would be smaller than the Sims Online because the whole game would just be pointless.

It is a psuedo-sport. The games are considered in the sports genre.

Nope. To be a sport requires competition. There is no competition involved in Pro Wrestling. It's just oiled up guys in tights rubbing all over each other as they follow a script to the predetermined end.

Admittingly I found the early Smackdown titles on the PS1 to be quite fun. Simple,arcade-ish and not badly executed.
I think the Smackdown vs Raw series has become more and more complex over the years,but I stopped playing them after a brief rental of the 4th rendition.
WWE/ECW MMORPG? An interesting thought,although seeing as it has a strong license (although not strong enough in the past to own the WWF brand name) it's probably best avoided. It might be better to try the UFC (something 'real') or similiar though.
I think though a wrestling MMO has more place as a FPS-server type joint,rather than a MMORPG.
It would not work in the traditional RPG sense of advancement. Levels would be stupid, but learning new moves could be a from of advancements. To do these moves however, would take player skill, instead of a push of a button. So a new guy could beat a vet that has tons of moves if that vet has no idea how to use them effectively. There shouldn't be a whole lot of NPC fighting either. Maybe some training program or something to get you aquainted with the game and also used to any new moves you get.
So it would work, but not in the traditional MMO sense. However, I would have no interest in it. I hate wrestling and similar games.
Sports are something that entertain me when nothing else is available. Wrestling entertain me when about 20 other professionnal sports aren't occuring. I did dream of myself as a hockey player (eh I am canadian), as a race driver and many other silly stuff, but I never dream of myself as a wrestler.
IMO, any sport should be part of a bigger MMO, as a secondary means to achieve something and have it own ranking and hierarchy with maybe some stuff helping it alone. I can see tanks wrestling in a MMO when not grouping and LFG far more than I can see peoples logging in to wrestle.
However, I do think that some designers settle design issues by wrestling, only way someone could justify the Vision(tm), Brad must be quite a wrestler! *shiver* I think I ever read a designer going as far as challenging anyone to wrestle him if they have issues with his design!!!
