Why you should give AC2 a try

Hi all,

I had wanted to try AC2 when it first came out but I had read some bad reviews and thought to wait. Well it’s been a little over a year and I finally decided to take the plunge.
After playing EQ for 4 years I got tired of waiting for the “next” game.

Well it’s been 4 days and I can honestly say this is a great game and I’m having fun! Very well thought out quest system, combat system and a huge world to explore with lots to do.

What I liked:

Awesome graphics, I mean it’s like going to the grand canyon and sitting there with your jaw on the ground the graphics and scenery are that good.

Balanced classes for the most part, you can be a melee, missile or magic user – mix and match and get some really cool abilties. Like shield stun, you actually see the mob you have stunned attacvk in slow motion. It has to be seen!

Great combat styles. You can open with a taunt to get the mobs attention, then shield stun it, attack and then do any number of specials when it goes “vunerable” and get damage specials.

Easy to get around with ports – you even get a free abiltity when you join a guild for a free port to your guild hall! Makes it easy to get together with guildees for events. The guild hall is unique to your guild, and its located in one of the towns.

You can solo or group – I love being able to choose.

Lots of quests, dungeons and vaults are very cool – Do a vault or quest and you get great exp. In fact this is one of the best features no slaying 100’s of mobs to level if you don’t want to. I leveled from 1-18 in 3 days strictly by doing quests and slaying some mobs as part of those quests.

Mounts! Craftable mounts, I did a quest at level 12 that allows me to summon a horse (looks kind of like the mounts from star wars) The mounts look cool and allow me to travel 120% faster than running!

Global chat and alliegence chat

Pet classes and crowd control abilities, some very cool abilties like a boomarang effect (weapon attk) for jaugernauts, stuns with the mob actually slowing down in its animation, fireballs...

No lag - I am running a Cerleron 2.4 512 mbram, so your experience may be different

The most helpful people I have ever seen in a mmporg and I have played EQ, AO, DAOC, AC1, and I have met great helpful people in those games.

AC2, holy cow – in 4 days of playing I have had 3 different high level players (I’m level 15 and their over level 50) run me all the way from start to finish on quests!)

People will actually stop and invite you to group with them. Very friendly player base.

They add new content every month.

What I don’t like

In some ways it can be a little bit to “real” and can feel empty in places. AO, DAOC and EQ have this “busy” feel about them. Hopefully will change as more players try the game.

No /assist command – I hate it. Playing EQ for 4 years I really got to love that macro and miss it.

Skill trees in some way give you alot of freedom but like most mmporg's also penalize you for trying to be different.

Craft system could be better - if your a crafter there are better games

No shared slots or storage system

No looking for group ingame tool

All in all a great game and worth checking out, very fun, best combat I have ever seen in an mmporg, best quests in a mmporg I have ever seen, and I really am enjoying the journey with so much to see and do.

If you decide to try out the 15 day free trial, feel free to look me up ingame - Zigman on the Frostfell server.

All the things you say are correct. AC2 can be quite fun if you are new to it but don't plan on playing it for months or years on end. It gets old fast and that emptyness you speak of goes beyond just some physical places where you can't find any monsters or things of interest. The game itself is devoid of a larger purpose.

Combat is terrific and progressing your character can be great fun. I'm even seriously thinking of playing for a month or two while I wait for CoH and WoW but again I hold absolutely no illusions that this is the kind of thing I will invest a lot of time and effort into as I first did on its release.

It happens with all games though wouldn't you agree?

Absorb the content, get to high level, look around and say ok what is the point to all of this?

I have been playing EQ for 4 years I'm lvl 65 with 206 aa

OK, so ? I'm still bored hehe

The best time I ever have with MMPORG's is when I'm a noob!

I think all MMPORG's suffer from the same problem, it's just how long it takes to reach that point, some games longer than others.

Hopefully with monthly updates it will be like AC1 and get the content it needs. Having Turbine running both games gives me hope.

I do agree that AC2 is a really good game that gets a lot of bad reviews for some reason.  I played the game when it first came out and I thought that it was great.  It had good graphics, good quest system, and awsome gameplay.  The only flaw that i saw in the game was that at some levels there was less to do, and it also took forever to level up.  For example, I was a mid 30s lvl human melee defender, but i couldn't really level anywhere because all quests were either to high for my level or the award for the quest was to low in exp.  Originally there was a couple quests that gave really good exp to characters of my level, but they had made the minimum level for that quest higher in a patch.  The only other option for leveling was to hunt, but there again I had trouble.  Monsters i could solo gave to little exp, and when hunting with a group exp was spread out over to many people.  After only being able to level up about once in a month I quit.  The only other problem I had was against the Lugian tactician class, because they could level up so much faster than any other class in the game.  Even at low levels they could solo large monsters because of there damn turrets and walls.  All in all it is a good game that had some issues which I am sure are now all cleared up.  I recomend it to anyone that is looking for a game to play right now.

I've also been giving AC2 a try recently and I've been pleasantly surprised.   I agree with a lot of the points mentioned.   I do wish there were more people in the world though - and it remains to be seen if my interest will be kept in the long-term.

One very neat feature I encountered the other night which I love is the way they implemented musical instruments and allow player to play them - even in sync with each other.   So you can have one guy playing a lute.. another playing bass lute, and another on drums.. and it all fits together automatically - while you switch around the melody you play by using emotes.   I even noticed the background game music stayed in tune with what was being played.   It has no baring on gameplay at all (as far as I can tell).. just purely a fun / social thing but its the touches like that add some extra spice to a game and make it feel more real.

The thing about the emptiness and getting old fast... yea, that's why I stopped AC2 also... AC1 didn't have that at all...also it's a bit late to start AC2 now with the new games coming out this year.
