Skill loss

Hello, I've been bouncing around mmo's lately trying to find something that interested me, currently trying DAOC again but I'm still finding it boring. I haven't really played one regularly since precu SWG. One of the things I really liked was that I could master 1 crafting profession and 1 combat profession and still be competitive in both. I've heard you can do anything you like in this game but I thought I read somewhere about a skill decay system. Will it be feasible to maintain combat skillls and crafting skills as a casual player and be competitive in both? I was also curious about the community. I actually liked how precu SWG forced player interaction with things like wounds, battle fatigue etc. Does this game promote a lot of community interaction. Thanks for any information you can provide.

The short answer to your first question is probably.

There are alot of skills in combat: dodge, parry, melee skill, spear(or whatever) skill, block, ect.

You can probably keep all that up and still do some basic crafting: for example, cooking and fishing...I dont think you could do all the steps in the baking process tho (farming, milling, dough making, baking) and still be casual. Unless you were ok with it taking forever to progress.

This is just my opinion tho...the game is really too new to know for sure...for example, pells just got implemented...I dont think anyone knows what kind of impact this will have on combat training time yet.

This game has at least as much interdependence as SWG did...although, I think if you dont mind a challange, going it almost alone is possible. The community is one of the best I have ever been a part of (I was on Bria in SWG, if that gives you a benchmark)

Thanks for the reply. I guess what I'm most concerned about is that I don't want to just be limited to only combat although I prefer to have a competitive combat character since I do enjoy pvp. Many games I'd simply max a combat character than create a second character for crafting. In a game like DAoC I can do both on one character and once the skills are maxed I don't have to worry about them. I can see why this game put in this type of system and although it's very open ended it also sounds very limited. This is one area I think precu SWG got it right. It allowed enough skill points to basically master 2 elite professions so you could be competitive in both combat and crafting. I'd really hate to be limited to only one role so it sounds like this game may not be for me which is a shame because it sounds very interesting. Thank you for the honest answers.

The good thing about RV though is you dont have to max your combat.  A newbie is capiable of defeating a maxed combat character if they use the combat system right.  If you've got some skill in combat, and realize how the system works, you can do quite well without being a maxed warrior.  All it takes is one lucky hit afterall.  A sword to the face by a new character and a sword to the face by a vet are both going to do the same amout of damage.

Also, you're not locked into one profession in RV, if you start off as a fisherman and max that all out, but later find that you want to bake bread instead, thats simple, just start making bread.  Your less used skills will decay and the ones you're using will improve.  No need to re-roll a character, just do what you want to do.

Heh, I was pretty amused a couple of weeks ago, when a group of crafters banded together, taunted a Barb raider into the equivlent of a dark alley, and proceeded to beat him to death with heckeling combs and winnowing forks...it was darn funny. I think it also proves Kanoth's point.

I appreciate the posts. I've also been looking over the official site a little. The game sounds like it has a lot of unique aspects. I think I may just have to give it a shot. I'll probably set it up tomorrow so I can mess around with it throughout the day. Did they add animals in the game yet? When I was looking over the skill trees I saw some hunting and skining skills. Does hunting animals help your combat skills or are they entirely different skills ?

hunting hasn't exactly been explored so a true answer could not be given by anyone but the Devs and there is no chance in that happening. From what i have seen however, fishing does not get you spear skill so hunting a bear would not give you combat points.

in short, hunting is a completely diffrent...dare i say it...animal

Animals are few and far between right now as most that we added at the begining were killed off quickly by players.

Not to worry, we just patched today and fixed a pretty big crash that some where having and to my knowlege, theres no more "show stopping" bugs left.  That means we can focus on minor things like NPC names, swimming animation, etc, and start putting in more content in the current 10x10 and the expanded 30x30.

By the way 10x10 refers to 10 boards by 10 boards, a board is one square km.  We'll be opening 800 new boards as soon as they're populated with settlements, resources, buildings, and NPCs (including animals).  Then while people are exploring the new 800 boards, we'll work on adding the next 900 boards which, I think, finishes out this playfield which consists of all of Hadrian's wall with a bit of sea at either end, then roughly 15km north and south of the wall.  (120x30 if memory serves)
