So, whats with the free trial?

I finally decided to see what the hype, both good and bad was about, signed up for the ten day trial and downloaded. Four hours later, I've exhausted everything the begginers area has to offer and am ready to move onto the real game. At this point, ive experienced little more than a largely uninteresting combat system, it certainly has the potential to improve later on, but still.

So I go to blow the dump, and find out I have to upgrade first. At this point, ive got 9 days to walk around a station with nothing whatsoever to do, and have not seen nearly enough content to make a decision about paying one way or another. SOE has made some boneheaded decisions in the past, but this takes the cake, its as if they dont want newcomers to know what they are about to play before they buy.

No, I'm afraid the cake was taken some 10 months ago.  You were left nothing but crumbs.

Before the NGE hit, there was ALWAYS something you haven't done, or places you could adventure in. Now, it's just a Solo Joke.

I'm sorry you missed out on the good days... I played SWG from Beta, took a few breaks, but always came back and loved it. It WAS an amazing game...

If you have $20 to blow, go out and get the starter kit... it'll amuze you for a few weeks...

I'll start my own SWG... with Black Jack... and Hookers!!!

    In fact, forget the SWG!!!!

This is what the rest of the game is.

All the long term content was taken out and leveling is a joke. People hate grinding obviously, but still, there isn't really any. If you took care of trial in 4 hours on first try, you'll be done with real game in 2 weeks.

The content really lacking, and if you don't have the expansions, it won't last you more than 2-4 days.

I was hoping there would be some redeeming qualities to what I heard and experienced, doesn't look like it, aside from the shattered remnants of what was obviously a great community. As if I needed proof SOE ought to be shot.

So, I guess ill be back if they ever come to their senses, or if someone else tries again. Good meeting you here, and those I met ingame. Good luck in your future endeavors

What's the game your sig is based on?

Well if your sig is based on any game....  Could just be creative art I guess?

Heh.  I know what his name is from, but I have no idea about the sig.   Now I'm really curious.

The sig was created for my guild, we are currently waiting on the MMORPG in development Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures

The background is a natural forest fire, the fellow on the left is Thulsa Doom, a rather evil and twisted character from the original books.

Just like EQ2, they dont want you to download a full 4.6 gig game for a 10 day trial. I think the trial system is an excellent way to draw newer players into the game.

Well, the WoW trial is 3.2 gigs, puts you straight into the world and only limits you with level cap.

But hey, what do those people know, right?

Having a trial system is always a good thing, but preventing the potential customer from seeing any of the game features that are particularly attractive about it is not. In a trial, what you want to do is give them a highlight tour, give them a taste of whats to come and leave them wanting more. Not shove them into a corner.

Why not show them the game?

In SWG you won't be spending time on some station. You'll never get on another station. You'll never again deal with environment like that again.

Show them your game, show them what it has to offer. Not give them a fake version.

If they made a "trial" version of word, would they show Wordpad? Nope. Time limited, document-size limited edition of the whole shebang.

The noob island concept is just that. A place for newbies to learn about gameplay. But this isn't the same as real game.

Any game that offers such special area trials has something to hide. It's simple. Why not show the real game? No, really. Why not? The only sensible reason is that you have something to hide.

In case of SWG it's the sharp quality contrast between the real game and trial and the customer base that will do anything to ruin the game. Both very important facts when considering any long term gameplay.
