Idea I was thinking about...

It would be very easy for some MMORPG's to add some mini games for when players have a bit of downtime...

Let's say you are playing a Fantasy RPG (like EQ or DAoC). They could have archery contests, races, board games, etc. Top 10 lists could be created, maybe even prizes given out for high scores, etc. These things would not need to be event sthat are handled by GM's or anything. Have it so you go into town, find the archey tent, pay a small fee, and up pops an interface for you to shoot arrows at a target, almost like an arcade game. Could easily be implemented into the game so that it seems like it is paret of the game.

This would help immensely for boredom, or people who wanbt to hang around town and socialize, etc.

Heck, each city could have its own Archery champ, and the person could actually have the title displayed on his PaperDoll or something so others could see. People could travel from city to city trying to be the travelling archery champ, or jousting champ, or whatever. They could have races with obstacle course, etc.

It would just be something to give you a little more to do in the game. And since the game is an MMORPG, there would probably be a lot of competition for this sort of thing.

Sci-Fi MMORPG's could have arcade centers with arcade games, shooting galleries, etc... As long as the concept followed the genre of the MMORPG, it would be fine. Give players something else to do, drum up a bit more competition, more Socializing, etc...

Even have a building you can go an dplay Checkers and Chess with other real people... I use to love sitting in my house in UO with my RL little brother playing Checkers and Chess. He lives about 1000 miles from me, buit we were able to sit and have fun together.

Just a thought I had. Would add quite a bit to any MMORPG I think.

Time spent coding such things is time away from coding content, class balancing, or loot tables. In the end, I'd rather have the content than the fluff.

Both EQ and DAOC had things like this, not sure about some other MMORPG's.  They were rather crude and basic, but they were there.

Just some ideas for people that get bored.

    (1) Do some crafting

    (2) Help a guild mate.

    (3) Help a newbie with money or a quest. (remember when you first started you were weak and broke?)

    (4) Log off and go do the things you've been putting off because you've had your nose pressed up against the computer screen for the last two weeks.

    (5) Quit the game for a while. Hindsight can tell you if you're really bored or just tired of the game.

I've done all of the above and when I got to #5 I found that I was just tired of the game. And guess what? At that point you're not very fun to be around.
