I'm strongly considering buying FFXI, as im currently in the market for a korean MMO, im actually looking foward to a harsh grind after playing WoW and Guild wars for the past year. I want to know how the community is, if there is any pvp, economy, endgame content, stuff like that.
I would also appreciate knowing if it is possible to used WSAD to control my character, or if it's anything like Lineage 2 WSAD.
Any and All help will be appreciated. I'm also open to having a person sponsor (Not sure if that's the right term) for the Adventurer Recruitment Program. You can pm me if you want to do that. Once again, thanks in advance.

Yes, like installing, you have to install SE's proprietary playonline service, include numerous usernames and passwords, and then maybe you get to install the game. The game is not worth the 6+GB of data you need to install.
Played this on the PS2 and PC, I don't even want to go there on the 360. STAY AWAY!!
Current Games:
Final Fantasy XI isn't all about endless grinding, waiting for parties, or impossible solo-ability... It's about what you, as the gamer, make of it.
That being said, there will be times you'll spend hours in a party to get to the next lvl(who doesn't want to slap on that next piece of awesome gear that's only 2000 xp away); there will be times when you will wait for a party for alot longer than you planned(although, that time can also be spent farming, questing, or crafting, with your "seek party" flag up); and there will be times when you just can't take on the mob you really want to without some help(but there's always the possibility that you can, down the road, after you've level'd some).
It is challenging, to say the least. However, for myself, it has been one of the more rewarding MMOs to play. I've felt accomplished after completing quests in FFXI, like I participated in the greater cycle of events taking place, whereas, in some other MMOs I've just felt like I was merely checking off a quest in my quest log so I could move on to the next quest, sans any interesting character development.
In answer to your question about WASD set-up: Once in-game, you can pull up your menus, select Configure(I beleive), and adjust the keyboard settings to "Compact Keyboard", which allows the more standard MMO style of movement and control, although, to be honest, this game feels so much more "right"(and this is my opinion only) with a PS2 controller hooked up to your PC(Radio Shacks sell a PSx converter for 10 USD so that you can allow the connection).
Wherever you end up in your gaming, good luck to you, and have fun!

It's hard in the beggining and most people quit before lvl 20 If you stick with it it does get alot better, around lvl 30 you can start doing promithia missions (Expansion) which are probably the best part of the game
The community is probably the best I've seen out of the MMORPG's I've played, 99% of the people will help you when your new and maybe give you a linkshell (like a guild) but one thing is don't beg for money, be polite and you'll make lots of friends.
As for the WASD it can be configured as the above poster said I use 4 =left 8 = forward 6= right 2= back 5=first person view. I find that easyer as my left hand can access the macros which are ctrl+ 0-9 and alt+ 0-9 but thats just me
Another good thing is you can be any job you want without losing your level... e.g you could get Samurai to lvl 30 then change to Black Mage and Samurai would stay at 30. there are also lots of jobs to chose from with loads of spells and abbilities. Lots and lots and lots of quests , missions and things.
About PvP: There is no free PKing or PvP.. So you dont have to worry about getting killed by some asshole when you just start, However there are PvP matches set up by a NPC.
Ballista: Nation vs Nation , team PvP kill people score points etc Rewards: some exp , ballista points and maybe a new title if you do really good
Brenner: More stratigic, takes place on a island which looks pretty cool in itself. This time there are NPC globe type things on each team which chase you and cast magic aim is kinda the same as balista accept you gotta think about it lol
Screenshot of the brenner island me (seraph) and a few friends : http://img227.imageshack.us/img227/7713/brenner1xp.jpg
Now onto economy.. Well it varies greatly server to server and such.. generally its good on most but there are people called Gil Sellers that kind of mess up the economy. They use bots and overcamp the best NMs then sell the drops and sell the in-game money for real cash. There generally hated by everyone as too are the Gil buyers - they buy about 50 mill and waste it all on crap they dont need and end up poorer than most endgame. But yeah most servers are good with few gil sellers.
Endgame- Ahhhh not quite there yet I've watched friends play some of the things looks pretty awesome.
Dynamasis: an alternate reality of what would have happend if the beastmen won the Great war , fight loads of mobs for relic armour and weapons - stats on that kick some ass. Kind of need a decent PC for this seeing theres gonna be lots of people with you and lots of fighting going on.
Sky: Accessed by doing Zilart missions to a certain extent, fight gods in sky. sky looks Fecking AWESOME btw lol gods drop some cool things also
Sea: Accessed by doing promithia again , looks awesome not sure what goes on here really never been.. i know theres a boss called Absoloute Virtue which is basically the hardest boss in the whole game X.X a question from the fan festival to the development team was "have you beat Absoloute Virtue with the equimpment availible to players" answer was "we're gonna try again" xD so i guess sea is pretty tough
endgame has lots to do :P
hope this helps ya
P.s what job are you thinking of starting as//nation//race? maybe i can offer some advice
P.s.s About solo if you really want to solo you can go beastmaster.. job is hard to start with around lvl 30 it gets alot better as you get an ability which helps (called leave i belive) so yea solo isnt impossible just gotta be the right job
Alright, i bought the game and so far it's a bit weird to get used to. The Final Fantasy interface definitely out of the ordinary.
What i really want to know is if Humes can be Dragoons. I really want to end up as a dragoon, they seem like a fun class, and i'm assuming that my favorite FF character, Cid, would be considered a Dragoon.
Also, is there a way to Change the movement controls to WSAD?
yeah any race can be any class.
for WASD do this- (taken from a post earlier in this thread
In answer to your question about WASD set-up: Once in-game, you can pull up your menus, select Configure(I beleive), and adjust the keyboard settings to "Compact Keyboard", which allows the more standard MMO style of movement and control, ....
Thank you and Thank you.
My bad ^^ never actually done it just watched abit ty for info (edited it into my orignal post so its corect )
And yes any race can be any job hume is probably the best if you dont know what you wanna be :P
good luck starting out what server did you end up on ?
Thanks
I landed on Seraph...it doesnt seem like a bad server so far, i've seen quite a few people running around on Chocobos, not sure if that's a good thing or not.
For the record, i'm having a great time playing FFXI. I'm only level 6, but i didn't expect myself to enjoy the game as much as i am.
Not to put you off or anything but... I heard prices went up quite alot on seraph around chirstmas last year more than most servers >.< so dont be put off seeing we're approaching that time , although they have implemented a few new things to try clamp down on gil buyers :P
1 good thing normally (depending on where you started out) is to lvl up on crawlers around lvl 6ish found in East and West Sabatura (cant spell sabatura but its just outside Windy). They drop silk thread which is normally good money (per stack, stack is 12 ) when your new or even later on :P

When prices raise they go up on everything. So any method you use to make money will make you money now or then. I remember at Christmas Silk thread got up to 60k+/stack So everyone was like "Hey thats an excillent money maker" But everything was expencive then, It doesn't make you any more money than it does now (Which is close to 16k/stack) Becuase Prices are in a ratio. Like Scorpion Harness were 8mil at christmas, now they're around 2 mil. If your farmed Silk to buy your SH at christmas, You needed to farm close to the same ammout of silk to buy one now.
A LOT of people see a big number and they freak out because thier only sorce of money is through their credit cards, or what they get off Beastmen. When Prices change on rare items, everything changes too.
You said you were a Hume. Which Country did you choose? Shop items vary by country andvarious other variables. Here is a a very nice site for FFXI info.

is there anyway to travel between nations?
Bastok is an excellent Nation for a Hume to start in, primarily because it's the only Nation a Hume will get a starter ring in(I can't remember the name of the rings off hand, no pun intended
That aside, it really doesn't matter where you start, too much...you all end up in the same place, eventually Although, I've tried my Taru mule out in Windy before...but all the tall grass there scares him...he can't see any mobs before it's too late m(O.o)m
Good luck to you!
Server: Unicorn
Lojack: Galka, 55 BST, 45 THF, 44 NIN, 36 WHM, and many jobs in the 20s
Velina: Hume, 10-11 in every newbie job, and 55 Goldsmith
First and most important. This isn't a korean MMORPG..... This is a japanese MMORPG.
In short, this is a game geared toward pve. There is very little battling other players. The basis of the game is you work with a team to do everything. You cannot get anything done by yourself. If you like solo content and pvp then I recommend you stay away. If you like group pve then this is a very good game for you.
Also the economy differs from each server. And I would say people are a bit nicer because there is no pvp.
I'm very glad i took this over lineage 2, especially seeing how the new server turned out. Those bots would have driven me insane.
And the community so far is very friendly. I've never gotten so many heals from random players in the open in any game i've played.
