    It does look pretty good.

I am wondering how they expect to 'beat WOW' when they're placing their client specs quite as high as they are, though.  Part of WOW's mass appeal stems from the ability to play it on some fairly archaic systems.  They're trying to do 20,000 poly base player models, which is somewhere around 20-25 times as high a polycount as WOW uses.  Add in their extensive use of light, shadow, animated scenery, high res textures, normal mapping, etc., and you're looking at some phenominally high machine requirements to run the darned thing.

Sure, by the time they release, we may see the first affordable 1gb video cards...  But will enough people HAVE them to make their mass-market dreams a success?  It's possible to over-engineer yourself right out of the market.

Yeah they havent said what specs run that. Im wondering why type of super computer it took to just run it hahaha. Come to think of it NM they dont have funding so how can they afford that type of PC? lol.

  • OwynOwyn Member Posts: 337
Their demo was all basically static objects; it shouldn't be hard to run on a good machine.

But try rendering the same scene with fifty players at 20k polys each and texture quality to match the landscape running around, and you're going to potentially run into framerate issues.

I guess we'll see.  I have to say - my love for the underdog/indie dev has me rooting for 'em, though.  ;)

The Demo was run on an AMD Athlon 64 x2 Dual core 3800, 3 gigs of ram with Nvidia Geforce 7800GTX. It ran smoothly at over 40 Frames per second.

I was running the Demo on my machine
just fine(which is my work machine at AMD XP 1800, with 1.5 gigs of
ram and an ATI 9600) . Everyday we test high and low to achieve the
most optimal realtime medium. Never fear! We will endeavor to
continue to make the most fantastic immersive world possible without
killing your pocketbooks (or for that matter your parents image)
We do plan to have most or of our customer base to have DX10 capable
cards by then. We want many characters on screen for sure, this is a
true WAR and just wouldn't do to have your battle brothers and
sisters frozen in Frame Per Second hell.

  • It's about time the MMOG industry, or at least a small portion of it, began moving away from the 'lowest common denominator' types!

This looks like it's gonna be a good looking MMOG. Sci-Fi fantasy...it works for me, as long as you guys stay faithful to the concept art and make sure there's plenty of high-tech weaponry, implants, genetic enhancements, etc..

The artwork does look a little like the work of Justin Sweet, which is nice.

I'd like to hear more about the engine...is it 64-bit? Multi-threaded? Realtime renderer (please say it's a raytracer!)?

My 2gb of RAM suddenly feels inferior....

Bar that, pretty STATIC graphics (they are amazing though) and nothing else. One NPC in that video would have been nice, just to see mobile graphics.

You are correct Sir. It is 64 -bit and multi-threaded it will also be supported by DX10 and Windows Vista.

Realtime raytracing is a dream for many. I think in the next 5-10 years we could start to see Raytracer engines running at great frames. Intel has some great papers on Raytracing for realtime.

    http://www.intel.com/cd/ids/developer/asmo-na/eng/dc/threading/245711.htm <--Good Article on it.

For us with the unified Shaders on DX10 and many other techniques in our own engine we are building from the ground up am efficient mmo engine.

well, that is very good news indeed!

Hehe...I read that intel ray tracing whitepaper some months ago, it got me all worked up! So basically I was just making sure you guys knew about it as an option.image

I only have one gripe...you announced the project too early! Now I'll be agonizing over it 'til it gets here!

HAHA. We did extensive studies as well.
I walked right up to our programmers and said hey what about we
include real time raytracing?! You should have seen the look on their
faces, I promptly walked out of the room. It was so funny. Our goals
at SRI is to drive innovation in not only art and online gaming, but
technology as well. Sorry about the wait! But it will be very worth
it. We are heading into a extreme production run right now.

My only convern is it seems like the MMO industry is growing and improving much faster than the hardware required for it.  I am glad to hear that there are still companies out there that are looking for ways to be compatable for the average joe gamer. Also, being innovative definately gives more rep for a lot of gamers out there.  There are some other topics in this forum that are quite upset with the "follow the leader" type of games nowadays.   BTW, interesting article =)

That is the real concern Mod3st. To innovate and become a leader you must risk. but for most corporation's bottomline they don't want to take that risk. There is a saying, if you don't have elves and dwarves don't ask for money. As sad as that maybe money is aversive to risk. While other companies leap, the rest try to put bets on that. True you see that market and go wait a minute. 93% of the market is fantasy based games so we have to make a fantasy based game. That doesn't make sense to a gamer but it makes complete sense to a corporation. Also they want to back it with a strong IP, already established.

But as a gamer you ask then why do those strong IP Fantasy based games still fail?
What is the missing ingredient that links gamers hearts to a title? That is the golden answer. I have my own theories.
My answer to the world is Kaos War. Many times I am asked by our fans, what is it that makes Kaos so cool? Just thinking about playing the game is so sweet. It is my firm belief that when a game goes right passed a gamers eyes, brain and touches their hearts it becomes a true masterpiece and no matter how "against the pack" it is it becomes successful.

In fact, they're about 7 years behind their single player cousins, in terms of overall quality. MMOG developers/publishers have always catered exclusively to the lowest common denominator! That's why MMOGs suck so badly.
I can play every MMOG on the market today with a $300. used dell...that's pathetic!

MMOG developers/publishers have always catered exclusively to the lowest common denominator...ergo there's no such thing as a high-end MMOG...not yet anyway. Tabula Rasa will be one of the first to move toward the high-end...but alas it will only be a little baby step toward the high-end and nothing more. Also, being innovative definately gives more rep for a lot of gamers out there.  There are some other topics in this forum that are quite upset with the "follow the leader" type of games nowadays.   BTW, interesting article =) M0d3st M0us3

that demo is nothing.. any engine can run a demo like that..

good TOOLS is what makes a good engine not a fancy demo made by artists.
