Sci-fi / cyberpunk games ?

I am curious as to wether there is a large interest in these games or are they far inferior ideas compared to fantasy ? the reason i ask this is because it seems the game that take a Sci fi / cyber punk theme dont' do so well ( SwG dosen't count hehe because of the name)

So was just curious why a group of people haven't gone after a game name like ShadowRun for a game .  I mean all the rules are there, tons of material to go through to get ideas dmg table, etc etc.  Would seem like it would make a very involved and awsome rpg, i would almost see it as a small group orintated / solo no need for huge "Uber" guilds.  There could be affilations(sp?) with certain orginizations that have jobs for you etc.  PvP could be orinated towards rival affilations going after the same target ? maybe just some thought...please discuss :)

I would be all over a Shadowrun mmorpg in a second!!

I have often wondered myself why it hasn't been attempted yet and I don't mean just Sci-Fi / cyberpunk I mean Shadowrun. I have heard rumors that there *might* be a Shadowrun game being made for the X-Box, it won't be mmorpg though but I'll take that over nothing at all heh

Sci-fi/space-age game. Only reason i'd play it if it was PvP oriented. Good combat system, think freelancer style if you've played it, where you have alot of control over the ship.

Ability to customize your ship, different hull/wing style. Size, etc.

Ability to harvest certain materials, asteroids, planets, the sort.

Colonization/space station building. Forging empires, destroying empires, being pirate, privateer, trader, navy.

Also, what I find most missing in most of those type of games, a game out of the spaceship. Where you could actually land on a planet, explore it with your char etc. The ability to actually do something on the ground, be it get your characters hand to hand fighting up, blaster fireing, etc.

    Forging trade posts/cities/corporations etc.

The ability to actually board ships and shoot the pilot and take over etc.

Imo, all those qualities and a lot more would make one of the best MMRPG's, and the best sci-fi game.

I must say that i agree with the above

I myself played several space/Sci-fi games and whats missing is actually stepping out of your ship.  Hostile space is a good example, the game is basically alot of fun and extremely addictive, but you don't have full control over the ship. Getting out of your ship to mine and explore would be great image

The only cyberpunk MMORPG I've seen is Neocron, which has a first-person shooter feel in it. Check out http://www.neocron.com/ for a 10-day trial.

Anarchy Online is your next best bet, though it has nothing to do with cyberpunk anymore. It is far more popular than Neocron though, and prolly the best released MMORPG out there, in my opinion.

I would sooooo love a Shadowrun MMORPG as well. Unfortunately, the game copyrights of Shadowrun belong to Microsoft right now, and they have showed no intent to actually develop anything Shadowrun-related.

  • same here, i opened a thread like this sometime last year - since i am a huge fan of shadowrun myself, been playing the pen n paper version of it for 8 years now...

last thing i heard was, that microsoft buyed the rights for pc games from fasa years ago - nothing happened yet. maybe we should organise a petition for a shadowrun mmorpg, sign it and send it over to microsoft - tho i doubt it would make a difference... but hey, at least we could try....

and btw, neocron or ao dont even come close to what shadowrun could offer, imho of course.

Anarchy Online is a cyber punk mmorpg and if you look at the current raitings meater it's number 2 on the list of top raited mmorpgs.  Just below DAOC and above FFXI.  If you haven't already checked out Anarchy Online I highly sugest you do, it's one hell of a game.

If you really want to see a Shadow Run MMORPG you might want to contact microsoft, seeing as they currently own the rights.  Personaly I would much rather see an Earthdawn MMORPG, but hell I'm probably the only person on this forum, who still remembers that game.

There actually was a petition for a Shadowrun MMORPG, can't remember the link though (prolly somewhere on petitiononline.com ?).

As Mythica was cancelled, I don't think Microsoft will dare develop another MMORPG in the recent future. My only hope is another company buying the Shadowrun rights from Microsoft. After all, they are holding them with no intent to use them.

Don't rule Microsoft out of the MMOG market. I suspect that they're looking to reposition themselves into a different segment of the market, and not simply create more derivatives of the same themes.

I wouldn't rule out a Shadowrun mmorpg 100% just yet.

Yes, Microsoft has stopped DEVELOPMENT of mmorpgs but they have not stopped PUBLISHING. True Fantasy Live Online is to be published by Microsoft.

Now after researching and looking around the internet a little, I found more tidbits on the Shadowrun game rumored to be being made for the X-Box (more likely the X-Box 2 ) It is being developed by Bungie ( the makers of Halo ) and published by Microsoft.

If the mmorpg market holds strong and the Shadowrun game takes off, there is always the possibility of Microsoft allowing a company to make an mmorpg based in it's universe. Of course knowing them, it would be an x-box exclusive to garner more sales heh.

Well then again, I am probally talking out my rear and just holding onto the faith that it could one day happen ::::39::

yes for the love of god please someone make a shadowrun based or named mmo of it i swear thats a game unlike anyother that would keep me from working paying for it would be hard though. that game if based on the books would be the best mmo ever made. though playing a fixer would be hard though lol. that would be the end all be all of mmo's. imageimageimage

  • oh and please pray that if a SR mmorpg ever comes out that it wont be a crappy xbox, fps clone, "my orcish street samurai pwns ur n00b-chummer"-game.

i want REAL seattle or denver or wherever shadowrun ROLEPLAY (yes, i am a roleplayer, unlike the 95% of shooter kiddies in the mmoRPG world). and i would quit my job right away for this game, too :))

I was thinking you would "Have" to start in seattle since it seems that where the main rule book "starts" at sort of.  Maybe start with Seattle and and you could slowly add more citys in free / pay expansions.  There is so much source material for a game like that.  No real need to make anythiong up just read the books and start coding :)

I too wouldn't want to see it as a fps bs either, was thinking a hybrid or necron combat souped up and made better.  You would have to have the ability to take cover behind Objects and stuff, and return fire.  Since there would ahve to be pvp of some sort.  I would think once again small scale war between 2 full groups would be cool as hell.

I would think driving would have to be part "Car sim" and your normal mmorpg skill of "Make sharp turn" or "stop on a dime" etc etc  skills that would increase how the car handles and do special moves.  Tons of ideas.

I think the Hardest part would be getting the Matrix up with release, since it would be almost as big as the city you start with.

ok, im done...but glad to see thsi topic has taken off.

  • surely the matrix would be pretty tough to implement, at least in a world wide functioning thing... but you couldnt even start thinking about a SR game, without having the matrix in it...

hehe, can i import my elven decker from pen and paper? oh sorry, i forgot... we dont even have such a game yet, dammit image

I for one would love a well-done sci-fi game that allowed you to pilot spaceships, planetary vehicles, and walk around in a first-person perspective.

Talking about old FASA games, my first love in this area would be BattleTech, which has great potential as  MMORPG really, encompassing all these areas. Stomping mercenaries in 'Mechs. Flying AeroSpace fighters. Bording ships in Elemental battlesuits. Raiding a neighboring empire to loot a factory or reasearch facility. And so on and so forth...
