Does anyone else feel ripped off that they get to call this game an MMORPG?. I mean, I love the game and I have enjoyed it since day one. I think it's probably in my top 5 favorite games of all time list. Problem is, for me anyways, I have always thought that static and lightly instanced games should count towards an MMORPG title.

Oh geez, I'm pretty sure this topic has been beaten to death already.

Beaten to death, dug back up, and beaten again. Several times now, by my count.

And to answer the question, no I don't feel ripped off.

Who gets to call it an MMO? Neither Arenanet nor NCsoft have ever called it an MMO.

Is it an MMO? Yes! MMO= Massive Multiplayer Online.

Is it an MMORPG? Perhaps not......MMORPG=Massive Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game.

Lets not mix our terms here people.

Can't say as I feel particularily ripped off myself, especially given the lack of a monthly subscription fee.  Although it does lack some of the fun of meeting and encountering other people out in the playfield, it also does away with the aggrivation of having someone steal your kills, or working for hours to get to a boss monster only to find him not only dead, but camped by someone infinitely more powerful than you.
As with any alternative approach to what are considered defining elements of an MMO/MMORPG (whatever we've decided to label this one, I are confused already) you take the good with the bad.
Thumbs up for GW, imho.  If I want to go it alone, there's henchmen.  If I want to gather a team, get to know people.  Make it what you want it to be.

Im so tired of these threads, its always the same things, people argue that GW is a MMORPG and others says it isn't... Both sides have their own crazy ideas about how come that GW is a MMORPG or not, I've been here for a long time and I've seen all the excuses possible, and you know what?they're all pathethic and for one and only reason :
quote from Guild Wars Official website

Is Guild Wars an MMORPG (Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game)?

Guild Wars has some similarities to existing MMORPGs, but it also has some key differences. Like existing MMOs, Guild Wars
is played entirely online in a secure hosted environment. Thousands of
players inhabit the same virtual world. Players can meet new friends in
gathering places like towns and outposts where they form parties and go
questing with them. Unlike many MMOs, when players form a party and
embark upon a quest in Guild Wars, they get their own private
copy of the area where the quest takes place. This design eliminates
some of the frustrating gameplay elements commonly associated with
MMOs, such as spawn camping, loot stealing, and standing in a queue in
    order to complete a quest.

Guild Wars takes place in a
large virtual world made up of many different zones, and players can
walk from one end of the world to the other. In Guild Wars much
of the tedium of traveling through the world has been eliminated.
Players can instantly return to any safe area (town or outpost) that
they have previously visited just by clicking on it in the world
    overview map.

Rather than labeling Guild Wars an MMORPG, we prefer to call it a CORPG (Competitive Online Role-Playing Game). Guild Wars was designed from the ground up to create the best possible competitive role-playing experience. Success in Guild Wars
is always the result of player skill, not time spent playing or the
size of one's guild. As characters progress, they acquire a diverse set
of skills and items, enabling them to use new strategies in combat.
Players can do battle in open arenas or compete in guild-vs-guild
warfare or the international tournament. Engaging in combat is always
the player's choice, however; there is no player-killing in cooperative
    areas of the world.

Players in Guild Wars can play with
or against players from around the world in the global tournaments and
arenas. And while players are initially placed in a region based on
their selected language (so that there is a greater likelihood that
others will be speaking their language) they can join up in the
always-available International District to form parties and to play
with anyone from anywhere in the world.

    End of quote

So, if they call it a CORPG, its a CORPG and thats it!

I copy and paste this everytime someone brings this up.

M=Massive=" Large in comparison with the usual amount"
    M=Mutiuser/player=more then one user/player
O=Online="Connected to a computer or computer network"

G=Game=" An activity providing entertainment or amusement"
RP=Role-playing=" An instance or situation in which one deliberately acts out or assumes a particular character or role."

So all an MMORPG is by definition is a
"Large in comparison to the norm activity providing entertainment or amusement that allows more than one user/player to connect to a computer or computer network"

AKA just because a "CAR" is the "standard" vehicile doesn't mean a Bi-cycle isn't a vehicle.

All you people that say it is "not an MMO, MMOG, or MMORPG."  Really are just meaning to say "I isn't WoW, EQII, or UO right?

    As I said before

Mustang, Focus, Accent, Civic are all Cars... they are also all vechiles.

    Compared a Bike to this

Huffy isn't a Car it is a Bike but the fact remains it IS still a vehicle.

Some people may say a Car > Bike... well that depends where you are.  Cars cost more, and have to deal with traffic... Bikes are cheaper to maintain and can often ride on the shoulder/sidewalk to avoid traffic.
    ---------------------------
No let me translate the above in based on MMOs

WoW, EQII, EVE, and UO are all Presistant MMORPGs they as also all MMOGs

    Compared GW to this

GWs isn't a Presistant MMORPG, it is a CORPG, but the fact remains it IS still a MMOG.

Some people may say a Presistant MMORPG > CORPG well that depends who you are.  Presistant MMORPGs cost more and you have to deal with lag.  CORPGs can are cheap to maintain and have less lag.
    ------------------------------

MMO and MMOG were around since the 80s in the form of MUDS.  These were entirely TEXT BASED.  No GUI at ALL.  This techniquely makes any online chat group a MMO.

Now if you want to say GW isn't a trandistional MMORPG or isn't a 3rd generation MMORPG I may give that to you.  But saying GWs isn't a MMOG at all is like saying a Bike isn't a vehicle.  I'm sorry but you can't change definitions by ignorence.  MUDS will always be MMOG just as WoW will always be an MMOG just like EQX will be an MMOG.
