Opening of Ryzom Ring Beta

MrbloodworthMrbloodworth Member Posts: 5,615

A
special week is starting for Ryzom, it's birthday week! As you may
already know, two years ago on the 16th of September, Ryzom went live
and the first Homins could breath and run on Atys... But today is even
more special as it also brings a very good and long awaited news: the
opening of the Ryzom Ring Beta!

The
Beta is reserved to our players who have a paying Ryzom account. As the
Ring is currently available on the ATS (the Advanced Test Server), we
are also opening the ATS to all of you. We copied your guilds and
characters from three weeks ago.

In order to access the ATS and the Ring, you have to:
  • Create a copy of your fully patched Ryzom client folder;
  • Download this file, extract it, and paste this new client.cfg into your new folder, overwriting the one that is already there;
  • Launch the client_ryzom_rd.exe. You should have to patch between 600 MB to 1.5 GB.
  • While patching, why not reading the Ring Manual Beta version?
All you have to do now is have fun with the Ring on the ATS! :D

Welcome to the Ring!

Ryzom Ring (R²) allows you to create your own Adventures on Atys. By
travelling in the world of Atys you will open up access to more and
more landscapes and NPCs to use in your own adventures, culminating in
Ryzom's entire plethoric bestiary and a huge number of different
terrains across all of the different ecosystems and environments of
Atys. In just a few clicks you will be able to layout the scenery and
NPCs of a new scenario and to open it up to your fellow players. Join
the community and enjoy the player-made adventures or develop a taste
for playing god as an Adventure Master ("AM")!

I'm sure someone will keep posting info about it vqly. A create your own content editor has huge potential and should have abit of excited feedback

My main reservation is the limit on conversation treeing for NPCs.  That's fixable with live GMing of scenarios but automations makes a GM's job a lot easier.

Well, unfortunately, I must admit that I’m quite disappointed
with Ring at this state. I know It’s a beta, and hope it will get better
though. I will point out a few things that I think *need* to be in a editor
like this, and that would be:

1)ability to make custom NPCs and Mobs, right now the customization
is very restricted, no way to change hp alone, separate def and off level, the
list goes on… Without this Ring will be a very poor tool.

2)Dialog options. Without more advanced options in this
field we are pretty much stuck to game mastering most of the conversations. No freaking
    way.

3)Maps are a bit small. Half of my scenario ideas went down
the drain after seeing the fist map. I was hoping for areas at least 2x times
    the size.

There are other things I see missing in R2 but I think they
will be implemented we download more R2 patches. And this point, it’s just a fun
and easy to use gimmick, but I don’t see myself doing any really good scenarios
    with it.

I was a closed beta tester so I have a little experience with the Ring.  It is a very indepth and powerful tool.

The maps are of varying size, from huge to small, so you just need to try more maps Metzger.

I havn't found anything I wasn't able to do with dialogs yet, what are you having a problem with?

Overall I love it, and hope to make many great scenarios on it.

    You can't conversation tree Kibs.

    EG.

    ----
    1. Hello homin. Would you like to hear the tale of the Giggling Gibbai?
    YES - go to 2
    NO - go to 3
    ---

    ---
    2. There once was a Giggling Gibbai.  He giggled.  The End.
    END CONVERSATION.
    ---

    ---
    3. Oh, alright then.  Have a nice day.
    END CONVERSATION

You can have a conversation tree with a simple tricks. It's not applicable for complex tree but match your example.

You have to externalise the choice.
The PNJ presents the overal view of the choice. Afterthat, he let you decide wich box you want to open or PNJ you want to talk to. Box A or PNJ A pointing to Act 1 and box B or PNJ B pointing to Act 2. You can also attach additional text to the boxes and PNJ A and B.

It's not as easy as selectable text but you can still do a lot.

Yes, it's doable but an extremely crude and immersion-breaking workaround.  Which is a shame.

At the demo they said we'd get it reasonably soon after release.  It's a shame not to have it at release though since I think it's about the biggest restriction on people's creativity with the tool at present.

Well, my problems with dialog ware covered by previous posts. I intended
to make fun, branching fallout style dialogs, without them my Guild town will
    be a fairly dull place…

About map size, well, I was thinking about huge zones, I can understands
that maps of size comparable with, lets say, Fount, would be an overkill, but
maps provided fairly effectively restrict scouting missions where you need to,
    for example search for someone.

And my biggest problem still leys with NPC customization. For example, I
would like to make a fyros smugglers who have atk value of 250 and parry at
150, so that a variety of chars could effectively fight them. Or a tough
smuggler boss with tons of HP. Right now I cant do any specific stats customization.
Of course I might be missing something, as I didn’t have long to test R2,
please correct me if I’m wrong, I’m still hoping to do some fine scenarios with
    it.

(btw, do you know when will they add more housings, at the moment
    provided samples are quite scarce)

I think the goal of this is to test functionaility and the UI.

Not really to play with all the toys lol.
