WoW Old Schooler Thoughts

WoW is in my opinion, the best MMORPG out there hands down. Nothing even comes close to how FUN this game is. It's fun fun fun fun ... then, you reach 60.

I played this game when it first came out. I loved it. It invaded my dreams, my family... we were all hooked, even our daughter. We loved the funny dwarves and vivid colours, ease of the UI and smooth game play. Killing troggs was fun, going into the 5 mans was a blast... even 10 mans like UBRS were fun. Then, reality sinks in. The only time WoW is playable after 60 is when you log in for raids, farm all week to pay for the repairs that raiding requires... only to get stiffed week after week on loot - which is the only reason to raid. When an item does come up that you can use, you of course never win the roll. Yes, of course eventually you will get the gear you seek, but plan on dedicating months and months on end with a group of people that is a mix of friends and people you despise in a 40 man smoosh of people. Raids are confusing, stessful, and not fun.

Then there is PvP, which is a mess. Unless you are unemployed or account share and do nothing but PvP grind daily, don't plan on rising in the ranks very far. A friend of mine was unemployed and slept only 4 hours a night and PvP'd for months straight, and didn't come close to the rank needed to be Grand Marshal (top dog.) PvP rewards are sorely lacking, and if you like to casually PvP here and there, expect nothing more than a tabard and a fear ward trinket.

Burning Crusade is comming out and isntances will be reworked from 40 man to new 25 man content, but to be frank with you, I hate 20 mans. 25 mans is not better... sure it's better than a 40 man confusing stressful mess, but it's way too many people.

I loved loved LOVED the game and had a total blast herb picking and doing 5 mans with my friends. But for me... end game and PvP were not fun at all, and after leaving and going back twice, I have finally come to realize that as captivating as this game is, sadly, end game is lacking, and I honestly feel even after the TBC expansion, things won't change enough to get me to go back.

It makes me sad really, lots of good memories, this game will always hold a place in my heart. I can't find another game otu there that I like, I compare everything to WoW, and nothing holds a candle to it. The positive side is 2007 looks highly promising in the area of online gaming, so we will see what the future holds.

Well said! I used to play it, and had a great time! Excellent friends, brilliant roleplaying, fun times! Then 40-man raids reared their ugly heads. Suddenly noone has time for roleplay anymore, as they are all raiding. When your friends do logon, guess what? They are raiding. I tried to raid, but I couldn't work out why ANYONE would want to spend 5 hours+ doing an instance, for a tiny chance of getting a shiny new hat.

So yeah, I have lots of good memories of WoW, most of them pre-60 memories.

  • YeeboYeebo Member UncommonPosts: 1,361
I totally concurr.  I like to see raid instances two or three times, but the idea of say...grinding through molten core 40 times so that I can gear up well enough to do the next raid instance 40 times sounds like utter torture.  There is no gear on earth worth that kind of pain.  The blues and purples you can cobble together from the AH and crafting is all the gear my main will have going into the BC.  I've gotten to honored with most of the factions for recipes (I think you'd need serous brain damage to have the patience for revered...but hey, that's just me) and I've been farming SM for gold to pay for ingredients, but the game is nearly finished as far as I'm concerned.

I also agree that 25 man raids isn't that big of an improvment over 40 mans.  Honestly, 5-10 mans are all I enjoy...anythoing over that and you're just a cog in a big machine...bored out of your skull for the 5+ hours it takes to clear a raid instance.  No thanks.

I don't want to write this, and you don't want to read it. But now it's too late for both of us.

/signed. OP's experience identical to mine. Came back twice, blah blah. The boredom is amplified even more because I've looked around for other things to play and they are worse: eq2, ddo, ...

  • Plasuma!!!Plasuma!!! Member Posts: 1,872

I shared the same experience... unfortunately, I happened to spoil myself with the two greatest MMORPGs in the market: SWG pre-CU, and World of Warcraft.

I hate WoW because the community got worse with each passing day, and the end-game was simply horrible. How you can say a game like this is fun at end-game is beyond me, but I guess some people prefer the basic item-collection level-grinder.

Words were never so true. -_-

It's dissapointing. BC can't come soon enough.

I too played before there was Battlegrounds, open world PvP was FUN and I enjoyed running around killing people.

Now day it's just farming... /sigh

Yep i agree...i have so much fun when i am from lvl 1-59..but when i reached lvl 60, i got my epic mount..i start to feel bored about it...and i really dun feel like playing it anymore...

I liked it better before they started nerfing everything.

Strat and Scholo were more fun doing a 5 man before they nerfed it and made it only 5-manable (10 mans were fun too).

    Same goes with UBRS.

AV was more fun before it was nerfed too.

The introduction of DKs was the big blow to PvP on PvE servers, as was the introduction of WSG and AB. (AV didn't really impact world PvP)

    ****ranting mode on****

Sorry, but i cannot hold it in any longer (ooh err), but i am so sick and tired of reading what is essentially the same thread over and over again.

I have had a L60 rogue for an age now, he has never done a raid, doesn't own any epic gear, yet i still love playing him and i always have something for him to do. OK, i am not a 24/7 player, i only manage a few hours a day at most but i don't understand how these people get so bored so fast.

I have posted before that i can only imagine that it is down to a major lack of imagination, as you are only going to get out of any game as much as you put into it, so if you cannot come up with any more ideas than those that you are carrot sticked towards you are going to have problems keeping yourself amused i suppose.

If you get to L60 and cannot see a reason to carry on, then please leave the game and if you don't want to leave then you must be enjoying something so stop complaining about it, but for the love of Pete please stop posting the same thing over and over and over again.

    ****ranting mode off****

Phew. Enjoy playing the game. ::::08::

It must be Thursday, i never could get the hang of Thursdays.

You're a moron, seriously, you just answered your own question. You just said "I don't understand how these people get so bored", when saying "I only manage a few hours a day".

    Go figure.

You haven't even BEGUN the real game yet, it starts when you hit ZG and MC, so don't start ranting on about "Lack of imagination" bullcrap.

World of Warcraft is a game for Raiders, maybe some are more hardcore then others and finish the content before new content is released. Atleast they have SEEN content, they have played ALL that can be played. That's why they're bored, is because they've "completed" the game and expect Blizzard to use the 70 million dollars a month on upgrading their game. It's what their customers pay for after all, to be entertained.

Thank you so much Grim for those insightful comments!

1 - Just because i only manage a few hours a day at most does not make me a 'Moron,' it just makes me a person with half a life outside of WoW and just because i don't play the game 24/7, it does not make my comments any less valid!

2 - Who the hell made you the god of gameplay that dictates the commandments of when i have 'begun' to play the game. I pay my monthly subscription just like the next guy and i will play the game as i see fit, if you don't feel that i am playing it the way you think it should be played, well TOUGH!.

3a - Again, who the hell said that this game is exclusively for raiders? I have met plenty of people over the time i have played that are not keen on raiding and have a perfectly fun time playing the game.

3b - If you think that Blizzard are making 70 million dollars clear every month and it is available for whatever your whim may fancy, then you may be heading towards the 'moron' category pretty fast yourself. Most companies have slight expenses like employees, datacentre and coms expenses, rents etc... to worry about and you may be surprised to learn that as the company and game grows, so do the expenses (shock! Horror!). Blizzard provide a product and charge a monthly fee for the upkeep of that product while you are playing it, they owe you nothing! If you feel that you have used that product to it's full potential, you are free to stop your payments to Blizzard at any time.

Again i will say, if you have completed the content of any other game do you just sit there playing it day after day, just complaining on forums about the fact that there is nothing else for you to do?? Well do ya'?? No of course you don't, you go find another game to play.

Well if you feel that you have completed all of the content in this game and there is no-where else to go, why the hell would you just sit around paying your fees, just so that you can complain about how little there is to do??? You can always move on to another MMO, come back for the expansion and then go to another when you have completed all of that content as well.

It must be Thursday, i never could get the hang of Thursdays.

yeah I agree, I just quit after playing since beta. World of 11 year old retards was getting me down and I needed a break. I was planning to come back after the rogue patch, then thought na  I'll come  back when the add-on comes out...now I'm thinking I won't come back at all   A break from WOW is all I needed to see it ain't really that great and I don't miss it.

I've been looking around at what else is out there...Well it ain't much :(

SWG is still the worst of the worst.

    EQ2 sucks

    D&D just ain't for me

Guild Wars has more retards that wow if that's possible and the whole public waiting room, find a group, hit an instance is very gay.

Don't like asian MMO's    grind grind and more grind

Matrix online is even worse that the 3rd film

D&L is utter crap and about to forclose anyway.

Archlord, Asian development and just sucks (beta).

Vanguard  (been in beta since the 1st invites). This game is a cut above but to get anywhere in it is gonna take 500 years of playing 20 hours a day... It's an old school MMO. But not a jump in for 1 hour every few nights  which is what I want given my social and work life at the moment.

    ST online is years off

Age of Conan ...?  still waiting to find out more about this.

LOTR looks crap.  no PVP I hear

So the MMO future for the next year or so don't look that great :(

Just out of curiosity, what have you been doing to entertain yourself?

Since my main hit 60, I've:

-been through all the high end five mans (some many times)
-taken tailoring from zero to 300
-ground up argent dawm, dark iron dwarves, and timbermaw hold to honored
-raided a few times to determine "Yes, it's true, I absolutely hate this"

I should mention that I did all of this while spending 90% of my playtime on alst since i hit 60.  I've gotten two alts past 40, and I have also levelled  several 20 "crafter slaves" with maxed skill and recipes for their level that keep all my other alts geared 1-40 on the cheap.  So it's not like I've played my main a ton.

I don't really like PvP too much, and as I mentioned I hate raiding.  I also can't see my way clear to getting revered with all of those factions, it's nearly the same amount of grinding that it took me to go Neutral--->Honored, and it would only give me one more recipe per faction.

So what I've got left is...

Level enchanting to 300 (this is honestly the only thing left that I'm actually looking forward too..the rest on my list is more fun than raiding, but not as much fun as levelling alts so it will go slowly).

Farm up the 600 or so gold that I'll need to max out enchanting and buy ingredients to make all the blue and purple cloth gear I have recipes for.

Get my dungeon I bracers and do the quests to upgrade the bracers, gloves, and belt to dungeon II (the other peices in that set aren't nearly as good as what I already have or am planning to craft for myself, and are also much harder to get).

I could also get cenarian circle to honored (and I might out of boredom), but their recipes bite for a non-raider.

I guess I could take up fishing or cooking, but honestly in terms of ways that I can meanignfully increase my character's abilities without raiding or getting serious about PvP for a while, I feel like I'm pretty close to done.

So, what have you been up to all this time?  (Not intended as a flame, as a fellow 60 that hates raiding I'm genuinly curious)

I don't want to write this, and you don't want to read it. But now it's too late for both of us.

  • ShadoedShadoed Member UncommonPosts: 1,459

Well Yeebo, pretty much the same as you really.

    -Tailoring to 300
    -First aid to 300
    -cooking to 300
-Fishing to 225 (long winded one)
-Enchanting to 260 (Almost there, very money hungry)

(Also levelled Mining & Skinning to 300 before switching to Tailoring and Enchanting, as well as trying other tradeskills to lower levels)

Trained up a few other chars (L47 Warrior, L41 Hunter and a few other lower levels) and dropped a few after L30+ if i didn't quite get on with them. My Rogue did spend a lot of time to start with supporting these chars (money, clearing paths for quests etc..), but not so much now.

But i spend most of my time helping out other players as and where i can, mostly lower levels looking for a bit of help on quests etc and especially guild mates.

I would also like to get my Cenerian ranking up, but somehow i never seem to find the time ::::01::

I have done a few dungeons / raids in the past with raid guilds ('Vampyr Slayers' and 'Old n Wise' especially), but i don't enjoy them that much and cannot commit the time with other family stuff.

That's about it really, i log on, i play and enjoy myself and then log off. ::::01::

It must be Thursday, i never could get the hang of Thursdays.

I remember my time on WOW very fondly.

The gamecards in local stores is what sold me in the end (how very convenient!),and partly that the description that people had hyped it as (the best thing ever!).

I remember how,as a human paladin first character, hearing about how people wished PvP had purpose. The honour system was to be hailed as the 'solution to pointless ganking'. How WRONG THEY ALL WERE!!!! If anything it changed nothing, and made PvP a grind!

It took me a while to settle down on a character. WOW is the first game I've ever hit end-game at,and in a sense the first MMORPG I ever really got into. Gnome warrior, level 36 Daggerspine. Human paladin, level 20. Gnome mage level 16. Orc shaman level 30.

Then I made an undead rogue. And fell in love with the rogue class ever since. I haven't enjoyed stealth so much ever! I laughed at how I could complete a quest by just sneaking past everything; and the risk of being found! I then remember joining 'Shadow Heart'; my first MMO guild. We did Shadowfang Keep, and I remember wanting Arugal's dagger so badlyyyyyyyy. Second time we run it; it dropped.  And I enjoyed the scary transition to Hillsbrad, and running into Alliance and fighting and dying (mostly) and wanting to kill people! I didn't really get into WSG,as I wanted to wait a few levels; a shame really because by the time I got into WSG no-one at my level did it,nor Arathi Basin.

It was hard to get into the battlegrounds after level 30 for anything.

I remember Shadow Heart dying,a painful night. Granted,SH wasn't a serious enough guild but it was a fun one! Everyone left for bigger things. I was one of the last to leave. Then I joined Street Disciple. They owned. (they had a lot of ex-SH members) It was fun to be alongside them.....until 60 came. Before that, much levelling and PK'ing and questing and fun fun fun fun!

All my WOW life I pined for 60. Once I hit it,I wish I hadn't. At first the guild raids were fun; discovering UBRS for the first time,LBRS,BRD,Molten Core. (they're still advancing very well today!) But after a while,I discovered the awful grind that comes with end-game.

Grinding AV for rep for a new dagger became a chore. Grinding reagants for stuff for ONE Molten Core run became a chore. And due to RL commitments,I wasn't able to join my guild on some of the raids. Hell,I even cancelled/put off RL commitments (some of them) to try and join guild raids. But there was little engaging PvP; most Alliance had the gears over me,and while I smoked a few of them my rogue class wasn't always up to speed for their better-geared equivalents.

I enjoyed gaining my Shadowcraft set though. 4/8. I enjoyed seeing rare drops, the thrill of after 1/2 hr of grinding BRD that a cool drop would go; people would argue over it. I remember accidentally 'ninjaing' the dual swords that Rend dropped. That cost me some of my reputation....for a while. I remember aiding a guild priest with the final part for his then-epic priest staff. (before Naxx)

But in the end,WOW couldn't hold me after a year of 60 undead rogue. I played less, cared less and then the night before my subscription was due to end,I quit. I gave my items to my friends and guild, deleted the rest and logged off for the last time.

I pined to return for a few days, but I didn't bother. I don't regret it. WOW was becoming a little bit of an obsession. I wish I had gained at least one purple item, but meh.

I realise in hindsight I could have stuck it out longer or switched to a guild with more times suitable for my RL arrangements, but I remained loyal to the guild I was in. Still check their website every now and then. WOW was fun while it lasted.

Here's to Sirril, level 60 undead rogue, Burning Legion, Member of Street Disciple.

The game ends when you start Onyxia, ZG, and MC... you'll get your epic gear and run the game ragged looking for any tiny shred of entertainment that you haven't yet stripped clean. I considered myself a typical player (at the time, less than 20 hours a week on WoW) and I still made my first 60 within my second month of playing. Maybe I was playing it wrong...
