FFXI Ne Good?

hey, i was just looking for a game that is really fun, and a lot of content, so i looked at FFXI knowing what the PS games are like, so i have a few questions. I know people say its a really long grind (which i am not a huge fan of long grind games) but, if i can only play on weekends about how long would it take me to lvl my guy up, and would it be like work, or would it actually be fun? Can u solo easy? or do u have to group to lvl up and is it another game that needs healers in a group to get the job done? PvP ne good on this good? I dont really want to try WoW cuz it just doesnt appeal to me. Any answers would be much appreciated, TY VERY MUCH

This game has an enormous amount of content that takes a very long time. The grind gets harder the higher the level. One thing i might point out is that you shouldn't play a game just for the sake of levelling. The game should be fun so that you don't worry about grind.Solo is very hard and really only doable by a couple jobs.Experience really can only be done at a reasonable level in a party.Yes you need some sort of healer.Fights in this game are not like asian speed fests where you kill a million mobs in like 5 minutes. Each fight takes thought/buffing/debuffing/tanking/control.With so little time to put into this game i wouldn't recommend any PVP.To answr your question though it is done on an equal basis where players are capped.Pvp isnt a free for all in the open playfield.

Lastly to answer the question of "would it be like work or fun"it all depends on your take of fun.My take on fun is satisfaction of accomplishing very hard tasks and seeing my friends in the party also succeed, this makes for happy times all around.Young players tend to want to only level as fast as they can and kill things with fast button mashing as fast as they can, this for them is fun,but not my take on fun.

Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.

Wizardry sumed it up very well. But I should add FFXI isn't just another time consuming game, its The time sink. Weekends are the best time to level because many other people like yourself have work/school and can't stay on too long during weekday's. FFXI can very well take you over a year to hit max Level. (75) But thats not to say it isn't fun, There are seeminly endless things to do, And this can overwhelm many people causing them to not do anything. FFXI shoudln't be taken lightly, Its more for hardcore gamers. If you think you're hardcore enough take the FFXI challenge =P

I played FFXI for two years and as i've said on these forums before; it consumed my soul.  The poster above me is correct....this is THE time sink!!  I have one char at lvl 75 and two at around lvl 30.  I would come home from work and play for about 5 hours a night....and on weekends.....for over 15 hours......insanity.

This isn't to say it's not a fun game....it's incredibly fun!!  It has a deep storyline and thousands of quests.....I met some awesome people and got into a wonderful Linkshell (guild).  I played my heart out....but I realized that my life was suffering because of it and i had to cut myself off.  It was my first mmog and it was a darling...and certainly put me through the paces.

If you want to play it.....just be forewarned that it is a soul-leech albeit a wonderfully fun soul-leech.

Also, in response to your question of soloing.....the answer is NO.  You really can't solo and lvl up in this game.  You need parties and you NEED friends.....you must be able to work and play with people to lvl up, gain items, etc.  The wait for parties can get frustrating sometimes......though i can't be too sure how it is now.  I've waited for 10 mins for a party and i've waited almost an hour.  Weekends are some of the best times to party up for the reasons the previous poster pointed out.

Take the challenge and see if you can handle it......cuz it is not a so-called carebear mmo.  It is very hardcore....and also very rewarding.  I've heard the new expansion is pretty decent and they are now rolling out things like chocobo raising.

    Plus it's final fantasy........
    Nuff Said

    Cheers and good luck^^

Besides the many excellent features, this is why I like this game so much.  I love a mmorpg that requires a certain extent of dedication and committment, that is deep and complex, and that is truely a challenge.  I haven't played one since I played FFXI a while ago.  That's why I am coming back thanks to Wizardry and others that will be forming a static group (the ideal way to play FFXI).

I'm thinking about taking this one up again.  Maybe.

-I played it briefly but I still have the software.  I don't think the activation code will still work.  Can I apply for a new one or am I better off buying a new box?

-The first time I don't think I was earnest enough about finding a good guild and was too focused on leveling.  I don't think I would have such a hard time finding a party if I was more laid back and looked for people to guild/rp with and just have fun.  What are the odds of finding such casual rpers at this point?  I'll be L40 forever and not care.

Granted, I've seen almost the whole continent by now (at very high speeds) so there's not much exploration to do.  I guess I am just looking for a time filler when my eve corp is on off-peak time.  Maybe I should take up exercise instead.  Or get a second job, save money, and move out of this lifeless suburb.

I need a new hobby.  And diphenhydramine hydrochloride.  It's friggen 2:20am and I am still cruising mmog msg boards completely wired.

-When you quit, if you cancled your PoL ID longer than 3 months ago you'll need to rebuy the game.(PoL Is free and didn't need to be cancled). IF you didn't cancel your PoL ID, and still have your Login/password and it hasn't been 1 Year yet, You can still login.

-Casual... Umm I dunno, You'll need to find a RP linkshell. They do exist they're just a bit harder to find. Maybe go through some places like Allakhazam or Killing Ifrit, or any other FFXI form and post on the indificual servers asking about a RP linkshell.

-Well, I don't know how long ago you quit, or how much you actually seen. But there are quit a few areas you have to unlock. And the recent ToAU expansion added another Continent.

-Umm I think Diet & Exercise would be a better chioce for you, Then get a girlfiend. A "Real" Girlfriend not somone you met online.

Well personnally I didn't like Final Fantasy XI. I got the Vana'diel pack about a month ago, and started playing it. About 4 days after I got it I quit, I thought it was a horrible game. I hated how you had to control with the "wasd" keys, because controlling with the mouse is just wierd. Also, mabye it's just that I have a crappy internet connection, but everytime I would get on Final Fantasy XI, about 5 minutes into it the internet connection bar on the top right hand corner would slowly go down until it hits 0% and kicks me off. I thought how my guy fought was pretty cool and stuff but it was flippin hard to figure out where to go for a quest. So I think that it isnt worth $11 dollars to play.

I played FF for around 3 yrs on fenrir server.... the things that i didnt like was the economy is all jacked up things that were 1000 gil whan i started are not like 10000 its a rediculous inflation... you always have to have a group unless you are a  nin/rdm or rdm/nin with blink tanking so alot of my time was in jueno just sitting waiting for a group   i quite because of those things after lvl 12-15 depending on you job you stuck grouping from there on out so no solo content in the game id advise anyone to choose a different game.. i did love that game when it came out though

Yes, these things you pointed out were definitely downfalls in the game when I first played.  I am hopeing that by playing with a static group, one of these problems will be fixed.  The economy, however, isn't going to change, and it bothered me last night to find the cheapest Dia spell was 1000 gil.  All I had to do was goto the NPC merchant and purchase it for 84 gil.  Now why do you think players do that?  I'm sure there are newbies that buy the Dia spell from players for 1000 gil, and so players take advantage of the newbs, but this is not the type of community I want to be around when I play a mmorpg, and another reason why I left the first time.  I've got my fingers crossed this time around, because I know there is so much to enjoy from FFXI, despite the drawbacks.

The mouse does horribly suck, but you don't have to use the WASD keys, you can use the number pad (Which most use) Or a controller.

Your connection problems are client side, (That means theres somthing wrong on your end). Dunno if its the same for you, but awhile back when my friend started he was having same problems. Didn't get fixed untill he got a new modem. (Old one was kinda... old)
