Ah, the joys of the word CAN....

A friend of mine let me test out WoW on his account. It did not take me long to realise alot of very odd "shouts" and requests on the trade and general channel.

I am far from perfect in english. Be it written or spoken. But I do try to get my grammar correct. Anyways, over to what I found to be funny:

Some guy was asking for a rogue to open a steelbox for him. So he spamed out

Him: "Can a rogue open my steelbox for me?".
I replied: "Yes"
Him: "Well can you?"
Me: "Nope, I'm a warlock."
Him: "FFS" and went on shouting, "Can a rogue open my steelbox for me?"
Me (again): "Yes."
Him: "Shut up!"
Me: "Well you are asking a question, I am supplying the answer."
Him: "No I am asking if a rogue can open my steelbox"
Me: "And I am telling you, yes they CAN."
Him: "You are retarded."
Me: "Really? Well I'm not the one standing there tripping over my own tongue. You are clearly saying something that you dont understand."
Him: "huh?"
Me: "Sigh....try this on for size... "WILL a rogue open my steelbox for me?"

I got alot of laughs from it, and oddly the kid stoped asking for a little while...but after some minutes I noticed on the chat "Will a rogue open my...."

Hehe.  Its wierd though, this is a common mistake all over. I will never forget my teachers always doing stuff like I just showed to us in class. Thanks to them I usaly get the CAN and WILL thing correctly. CAN and MAY is also a common mix up.

Its really funny if you take a plane trip and the attendant asks you;
"Can I help you with anything?". Just reply "I dont know, CAN you?". She/he should of asked you "MAY I help you with anything.".

Mc Donalds suffers from this alot. They ask "Can I take your order?"...."I don't know, CAN you?" Once again "MAY I take your order." should of been used...lol

CAN and MAY are tricky words eh? But you CAN have alot of fun with it.

Pretty funny. I would say that you shouldn't go around correcting people, but that mastake was just dying for grammar corrections. If I'm correct, he could have said, "Can a rouge please open my steelbox for me"?

Well you would think so, but again you are asking if they "can" but with a different word.

"Could you open this?" "Yes, I could".... see? Same setup.

    That is pretty funny actually.

Unfortunately, I've been at the blunt end of those jokes quite often, hehe even on these forums once or twice. I try really hard with my English, even though its my, erm... Fourth spoken language I think it is. But it's hard sometimes.

Very basic things like those words you mentioned, Will and Can, or the silly things like the differences between To and Too, or Then and Than, Where and Were. I know for most of you, it's second nature but for some of us, it's an effort =).

Sentence structure can be a real bitch in English too, it's completely different from Russian, Mandarin or French, so I mess up quite a bit there. Oh well, whenever I'm teased about it or whatever, most people are just doing so in good fun and you have to take it that way and even I have a good laugh at what I write out sometimes.

Nice story. I had a rogue in WoW and I wish I would have thought of that! Just thinking of those two toons standing there looking at each other. Classic!

I shoot for the curve... anything above that is gravy.
