Ok, I have played this game before and got past level 10 and I still wasn't too happy with all the grinding. I quit this game and tried WoW for awhile and got bored of that once I hit 60 and quit video games for awhile. I really want to try FFXI again because I like the atmosphere of have to party and what not and how similar it is to Final Fantasy Tactics. However, I am not a super video game guy. I hardly play on the weekdays and usually play at night or on the weekends. I can prboably donate 6 hours at most a week. How long will it take me to get into the fun parts of the game?
Thanks

Yeah, Accounts can be cross platforum.
Another thing, if you decide to come back, during the week when you don't have much time You could keep your character by a Pond or Lake to fish. Just 15-20 mins at a time can net you enough gil to fund your jobs when you have time to level them.
Hmm, you guys sound assuring. However I play guitar and I am really trying to comit myself more and more to it. My minimun is two to three hours on it daily PLUS I work out nearly everyday. But what you guys say sounds great and I like the idea of leaving my PS2 on so I can fish and not do anything or does that require me to be there?
FFXI is the most time demanding game out there. For some casual players, it will take literally 2-3 months (possibly more) to hit level 30 with a subjob, which is where the game kinda perks up.
I quit the game when I hit level 54 with my Red Mage, and soon felt much healthier for it.
The fun part to me was grouping, but after about 2 hours of constant grinding in one party in one spot, I would have to rest. I just couldn't take it. I could have put a bit more time in it.
Put it this way, when I was way into the game, I played for probably 15-20 hours a week, sometimes more when I was really bored with nothing else to do. Those are the highest I got. If you want to get to the end game stuff, I would think it would take over a year with that little time to give each week.
Once you hit 51 the XP jumps dramatically.
At least that's how it was when I quit playing. But I enjoyed my time on FFXI. But with less than 10 hours, I agree with a previous poster, you won't get there fast.
Unless you pick one of the fast invite jobs like Whm, Brd, Rdm. Or become a tank (PLD or Nin), it takes about 1 Year on average to hit max level.(For your first time through btw, if you do additional jobs most of the time they don't take you nearly a year) Thats for the average person though. Some people (Like myself for one) get away form leveling and do other things. And some really, really, really Like lvling and do it in a few months.
Everytime you start this message is displayed, and they really, really mean it.
You guys have been a great help, thanks a bunch.
Well hmm...
You dont have to donate alot of time to this game, but it really wouldnt make sense to log in for nething under 3 hours.
End game is very very time consuming. Its alot of waiting, hoping and socializing. The very demanding linkshells would require you to play 12-30 hours a week to ever get anything out of it.
On the plus side Square Enix is begining to impliment alot more plug and play activities for those who dont have so much time to spend on the game. at the moment unless u can round up a quick "assault" id say be prepared to donate at least 3 hours per session. But if u want to excell in this game, alot more dedicated time is necessary lol.
75 PLD 75 BRD 75 COR 75 DRK 75 SMN.......
329 DAYS play time
Corsair's a tough one, They're kind of like a brd in what they can buff, but they can buff diffrent things then a brd (And vise versa). I've never played Corsair so I can't be too much help, but from what I've been told they're invite rate is maybe top 5.

LOL I was referring to music.
But yeah, I did buy FFXI on CD Rom when it first came out.
I love the atmosphere and the content of this game and I've reactivated my account twice during the years since release, however what has driven me from the game and will probably keep me from ever reactivating is the fact that gaining levels (thus unlocking content that requires you to be certain level) takes a lot of time just standing in one spot pulling mob after mob, it becomes very monotonous and can really become mind boggingly boring.
I played up to a 56 WHM/BLM, I like the role of WHM and I was pretty good at it, however when every party you ever were in has stood still in the same spot for more than 2 hours you just start wondering why you even bother.
The content in FFXI is fantastic but getting to it is no fun at all, it's a grind in its true sense, not that you need a lot of XP but the way you get the XP is extremely boring. Leveling up is mostly fun in the early levels since then you will move
around the whole zone fighting things, later on it's all
about camping. They have tried to improve on this with the XP rings and such but the problem isn't gaining XP it's the way you have to do it, the game does not encourage an adventurous party to move around fighting mobs wherever they may encounter them, it is designed in such a way that to be somewhat effective at gaining XP you need to have a camp in a secure or semi-secure spot, if you don't camp the XP will be so low that it will take you 4-5 times longer to gain the same XP.
If you love repeating the same thing over and over and over until you can experience new content this game is for you.
Currently I am personally enjoying City of Villains, I would say XP wise it's the exact opposite of FFXI, you fight lots of baddies at the same time and move around a lot, it even sports some very cool content but it wont give you that personal feel that FFXI can provide if you are stubborn enough.
thanks for your edit^^
I'm happy to hear that the economy is being reeled in. I just remember how crazy inflation was.....but good for square in regaining control, cuz it was getting really ugly.
When I was leveling Bard, I loved it, because after we'd get the first 1,000 xp in a party, people who had never partied with a Bard before would yell "BARDS RULE!"
The buff's are amazing and can really speed up the killing of creatures who take over a minute to kill each.
I'm not sure on ranges, but with Bard, I'd have to tell people, Mages must stand together and back from the attackers, because you have to give everyone different buffs.
If I had my weapon out fighting, then I probably either wasn't doing my job or was just waiting to throw a buff on. I know when I was Bard, I constantly ran back and forth, putting buffs on different people. If I had a group who would really work with me, I could get accuracy and speed on the Tank and Melee, then I could get the Ranger buff on the ranger without getting it on no one else, then I could put the MP buff Mage's Ballad on the mages, and just keep doing it over and over.
After a fight, everyone's health and MP looks much better and the enemy was defeated more quickly. So if they didn't know about Bard before, they did then.
So if Consair is anything like a Bard, I'm sure people will either learn how valuable they are or already have.
SE is banning everyone, not just RMT. People who don't even do anything wrong, there are still Third party tool users camping the good monsters, and with every RMT they ban, 3 more take his/her palce.
This game is very time consuming, boring, repetative. I'd say try that free trial, and if you don't like it by then, you won't like it later.

Are the people who arn't doing anything wrong, using third party tools like Windower?
