Must I donate 1000 hours of my life?

Ok, I have played this game before and got past level 10 and I still wasn't too happy with all the grinding. I quit this game and tried WoW for awhile and got bored of that once I hit 60 and quit video games for awhile. I really want to try FFXI again because I like the atmosphere of have to party and what not and how similar it is to Final Fantasy Tactics. However, I am not a super video game guy. I hardly play on the weekdays and usually play at night or on the weekends. I can prboably donate 6 hours at most a week. How long will it take me to get into the fun parts of the game?

Thanks

I don't think you have nearly enough time, not to discourage you as this is a good game, just very time consuming, and I wouldn't recommend it to somone with any less than 10 hours a week. (Preferablly 3-4+ hours of solid playtime at a time). If you don't have much time like you say, it may take months before you get to anything good.

That really sucks... Well, if I could use the same account on both a PS2 and my computer I might be able to throw in a couple more hours here and there.... Is that possible?

  • TelakiTelaki Member Posts: 361

Yeah, Accounts can be cross platforum.

Another thing, if you decide to come back, during the week when you don't have much time You could keep your character by a Pond or Lake to fish. Just 15-20 mins at a time can net you enough gil to fund your jobs when you have time to level them.

I don't think that you have to donate that much of your life to this game.  I mean I go to college full time as well as work 25-30 hours a week, and usually see my girlfriend every single day.  So as you can imagine I don't have that much time on my hands to play this game, but whenever I get the opportunity to play, I usually find 5+ hour sessions, I have a great time.  FFXI has the best community out there and the gameplay is amazing!!! Sure the grind can be boring and frustrating at times, but I think the fighting in FFXI is far better than that of WOWs.  I would say give it a shot :)

Hmm, you guys sound assuring. However I play guitar and I am really trying to comit myself more and more to it. My minimun is two to three hours on it daily PLUS I work out nearly everyday. But what you guys say sounds great and I like the idea of leaving my PS2 on so I can fish and not do anything or does that require me to be there?

  • TelakiTelaki Member Posts: 361
Requires you to be there of course >.>, I ment fishing in between things. Like while you're eating, or if you've got a few minutes before you need to go somwhere or do somthing. Fishing is one of the few Money making methods where a little bit of time at a time adds up and can actually make you some progress.

One more question: How time consuming is the endgame?

  • TelakiTelaki Member Posts: 361
If you ever reach endgame... it just depends on what you do. A lot of the time is spent killing XXX NM to get XXX drop to spawn XXX NM to get XXX, YYY, ZZZ Drops that have a 1% drop rate (Or somthing like that). Endgame is all about equipment, Doing things like Sea, Sky, Limbus, Dynamis, ENM's, HNM's inorder to get some sort of item out of it.

FFXI is the most time demanding game out there. For some casual players, it will take literally 2-3 months (possibly more) to hit level 30 with a subjob, which is where the game kinda perks up.

I quit the game when I hit level 54 with my Red Mage, and soon felt much healthier for it.

I played from November 15, 2003 to August 13 2006. with a playtime of 120 days. (family rule is no video games on school days) so I was putting about 5-6 hours in on weekends. but of course I was a whm so I did not have to wait more then 10 minutes for party invites. I had 1 level 75 white mage (healer), black mage at lv 40, 2 jobs at level 30 and the rest were lv 10.

I played FFXI on and off for a little over a year.  The highest I got was to Level 50 Bard, with a 36 Whm, 25 Ninja, 21 Black Mage, and maybe 10 Warrior.

The fun part to me was grouping, but after about 2 hours of constant grinding in one party in one spot, I would have to rest.  I just couldn't take it.  I could have put a bit more time in it.

Put it this way, when I was way into the game, I played for probably 15-20 hours a week, sometimes more when I was really bored with nothing else to do.  Those are the highest I got.  If you want to get to the end game stuff, I would think it would take over a year with that little time to give each week.

Once you hit 51 the XP jumps dramatically.

At least that's how it was when I quit playing.  But I enjoyed my time on FFXI.  But with less than 10 hours, I agree with a previous poster, you won't get there fast.

Unless you pick one of the fast invite jobs like Whm, Brd, Rdm. Or become a tank (PLD or Nin), it takes about 1 Year on average to hit max level.(For your first time through btw, if you do additional jobs most of the time they don't take you nearly a year) Thats for the average person though. Some people (Like myself for one) get away form leveling and do other things. And some really, really, really Like lvling and do it in a few months.

Everytime you start this message is displayed, and they really, really mean it.

I think I am just going to try it out. One of the things about FFXI that draws me the most is the unique enviorments. All I need is that and a good CD and I'll be happy for the most part. One more question though: how does a Corsair get as far as invites go? I know they're relatively new, but for those of you playing, is it hard to find a group? One thing I couldn't stand when I used to play was waiting for 30 + min in the Valkrum Dunes for a party.

You guys have been a great help, thanks a bunch.

    Well hmm...

You dont have to donate alot of time to this game, but it really wouldnt make sense to log in for nething under 3 hours.

End game is very very time consuming. Its alot of waiting, hoping and socializing. The very demanding linkshells would require you to play 12-30 hours a week to ever get anything out of it.

On the plus side Square Enix is begining to impliment alot more plug and play activities for those who dont have so much time to spend on the game. at the moment unless u can round up a quick "assault" id say be prepared to donate at least 3 hours per session. But if u want to excell in this game, alot more dedicated time is necessary lol.

    75 PLD 75 BRD 75 COR  75 DRK 75 SMN.......

    329 DAYS play time

Umm >.> I hope this doesn't cause any problems, But for the most part FFXI is DVD-Rom only. The only CD's you might find are over 3 Years old when they released the first FFXI+RoZ Into US & the CoP expansions. (Which All 3 of those are bascially the collectors edition now on a DVD)

Corsair's a tough one, They're kind of like a brd in what they can buff, but they can buff diffrent things then a brd (And vise versa). I've never played Corsair so I can't be too much help, but from what I've been told they're invite rate is maybe top 5.

LOL I was referring to music.

But yeah, I did buy FFXI on CD Rom when it first came out.

I love the atmosphere and the content of this game and I've reactivated my account twice during the years since release, however what has driven me from the game and will probably keep me from ever reactivating is the fact that gaining levels (thus unlocking content that requires you to be certain level) takes a lot of time just standing in one spot pulling mob after mob, it becomes very monotonous and can really become mind boggingly boring.

I played up to a 56 WHM/BLM, I like the role of WHM and I was pretty good at it, however when every party you ever were in has stood still in the same spot for more than 2 hours you just start wondering why you even bother.

The content in FFXI is fantastic but getting to it is no fun at all, it's a grind in its true sense, not that you need a lot of XP but the way you get the XP is extremely boring. Leveling up is mostly fun in the early levels since then you will move
around the whole zone fighting things, later on it's all
about camping. They have tried to improve on this with the XP rings and such but the problem isn't gaining XP it's the way you have to do it, the game does not encourage an adventurous party to move around fighting mobs wherever they may encounter them, it is designed in such a way that to be somewhat effective at gaining XP you need to have a camp in a secure or semi-secure spot, if you don't camp the XP will be so low that it will take you 4-5 times longer to gain the same XP.

If you love repeating the same thing over and over and over until you can experience new content this game is for you.

Currently I am personally enjoying City of Villains, I would say XP wise it's the exact opposite of FFXI, you fight lots of baddies at the same time and move around a lot, it even sports some very cool content but it wont give you that personal feel that FFXI can provide if you are stubborn enough.

MatteusG, I know this isn't too helpful since you're only 56, But further on in endgame there are Roaming parties. Where you Roam over an area moving from 1 mob to another. I was in an 11k/hour Roaming party a couple nights ago ^.^

I played FFXI from when it debuted on the ps2 in the states until jan. of 2006.  I was hardcore for about a total of 10 months. ...meaning that i played for about 5-6 hours a day.....it devoured my soul.  I then played it on and off reconnectiing with my linkshell and we'd hit some NMs or do some dungeons...and help the new people in our LS.  This game really requires some serious time to get to the really fun parts.  I have a lvl 75 red mage and a couple of other chars  under lvl 30.  That message one of the other posters made a screen cap of is a serious message.  It really can consume your life.  All in all, i have to say my life is a little easier now that i kicked the crack.  Now don't get me wrong....FFXI is an amazing game.  Depth of story and the fun i had with the people i met is still nearly unsurpassed by most other mmos out there.  If anyone is going into this game now, you need to realize that your school, your work and your love life runs the major risk of getting pushed aside.  I thought i could play it casually, and i really couldn't.....but it allowed me to ween myself off and reclaim my life^^.  I still love the experience i got from playing this game, but i can never go back.  But again, commit to it and it will be an awesome ride....especially if you connect with a great linkshell...or make your own!  But the early lvls....til about lvl 20 can be a grueling grind.  Later things open up and play gets much more interesting, and you start being able to travel further and connect with more people doing similar things (quests, missions, etc.)  FFXI will always have a special place in my heart.  I met some of the best people i've ever played with....total strangers at first...but soon became good friends.  I do know that the community is a bit colder recently....and the economy is completely shot.  I highly recommend this mmo...but with a serious caveat.  You soul might be taken.....  Now i am in a limbo waiting for a great mmo to open it's doors.....  I've outplayed WOW and i'm playing EVE now.....which rocks!!  Here's hoping Conan and Warhammer will be winners!!!  Anyway...i've rambled on far too long.....Good luck to you if you take the reigns of this game....it's awesome....and good luck balanceing your life.....cuz it'll be a struggle.  Cheers M8!!

I had to break that up, Made me dizzy trying to read it ~.~....and I think Red is easier to read >.>. As for your economy statment, I don't know how long ago you played, But FFXI is in a state of deflation (Still) and prices are droping, SE is banning RMT about every 3 months now so that removed the inflation that we had last christmas.
  • mochipixelsmochipixels Member UncommonPosts: 144
    lol
    thanks for your edit^^
I'm happy to hear that the economy is being reeled in.  I just remember how crazy inflation was.....but good for square in regaining control, cuz it was getting really ugly.

I'm not familiar with the Consair job, but if like a previous poster said, it is sort of like a Bard, then knowledable people will invite you to a party.

When I was leveling Bard, I loved it, because after we'd get the first 1,000 xp in a party, people who had never partied with a Bard before would yell "BARDS RULE!"

The buff's are amazing and can really speed up the killing of creatures who take over a minute to kill each.

I'm not sure on ranges, but with Bard, I'd have to tell people, Mages must stand together and back from the attackers, because you have to give everyone different buffs.

If I had my weapon out fighting, then I probably either wasn't doing my job or was just waiting to throw a buff on.  I know when I was Bard, I constantly ran back and forth, putting buffs on different people.  If I had a group who would really work with me, I could get accuracy and speed on the Tank and Melee, then I could get the Ranger buff on the ranger without getting it on no one else, then I could put the MP buff Mage's Ballad on the mages, and just keep doing it over and over.

After a fight, everyone's health and MP looks much better and the enemy was defeated more quickly.  So if they didn't know about Bard before, they did then.

So if Consair is anything like a Bard, I'm sure people will either learn how valuable they are or already have.

SE is banning everyone, not just RMT. People who don't even do anything wrong, there are still Third party tool users camping the good monsters, and with every RMT they ban, 3 more take his/her palce.

This game is very time consuming, boring, repetative. I'd say try that free trial, and if you don't like it by then, you won't like it later.

Are the people who arn't doing anything wrong, using third party tools like Windower?

Well, I am at level 10 now and haven't started the dunes yet. So far the game is iffy... I already got the new expansion expecting I'd like it and I really want to play it before I decide if I should stick with it. But my theres so much time involved..... and it kind of sucks you in because you can't just log in to do one thing without doing another which turns into an hour long task... I wish I hadn't registerd the damn expansion because I might not even get there..
