Lord of the Rings a WoW clone?

I was looking forward to this game years ago, but I hear it's basically going to be a WoW clone now, quest driven, no real PvP, raid endgame, simplisitic crafting, sissy death penalty, dummied down for the masses.

All MMORPGs has some things the same. I think LOTRO will be pretty different than WoW.

I still say LOTRO is too bad and limited of a game to be a WoW clone.  It's like they tried to go for WoW, but to make themselves different they took out all the fun stuffs to make a well rounded crappy game.

Main problem is its limited by the source material. They would have been much better off by keeping the origonal plans of Middle Earth Online and set it in the 4th Age (when the Sillmillarian or wtf ever took place). Would have given them a heck of alot more freedom to make a great game instead of what looks to be a not so good one.

    Nope.

Its no secret its a PvE based game. People will just need to accept that. Its also no secret its quest driven...duh....what else would there be in a PvE based game? Its the quality of the quest that will count. If you consider WoW's simple mind kill task to be "quest" then this will not be a clone.

No, based on what you can read about the game on many interviews and articles, I don't see where you could make the assumption its a WoW clone. WoW is a simple level grinder with the sole purpose of getting the player to level cap so they can raid and PvP.

The interface is similar. The WoW interface is hardly new or inovative. Its a copy of every other MMO before it. ( a rather cluttered copy on top of it)

From what I've read and seen about LotRO so far it's going to be quite different from WoW.. Especially the combat system which while in groups depends more on working together. Races might be a bit the same.. I mean, change hobbits into gnoams and we've got alliance, but from what I've read about the classes it's gonna take a very different playstyle to do good then in WoW..

Untill now I'm very interested in LotRO, especially because I'd love to see what Turbine is going to do with the Tolkien environment. The only things that make me shiver are the facts that Turbine developed DDO (which I disliked) and that CM is involved..

    And you played it.... when?

While I don't have high expectations for LotR:O because Turbine is making it and their track record is less than impressive, especially lately, I think it's a bit early to be bashing the game when it's still in closed beta.

If you aren't in the beta then you have no idea what you're talking about.
If you ARE in the beta and are discussing gameplay features (or just about anything else for that matter) then you're violating the NDA.

What they're doing is taking the content Tolken wrote and expanding on it. Technically, there's no limit to the amount of content they can produce from the framework J.R.R. povided. The real content question is, "Will they execute it skillfully enough to do credit to the franchise?"

The world of Tolkien is huge. So if they do it right, then the map can be awesome.

Shouldn't people be saying that WoW and most other games are just clones of EQ1, AC, etc.  Not the other way around?

World of Warcraft did NOT come out first.  It just took what everyone else was doing and polished it up.

Lord of the Rings is going to be way different then World of Warcraft, cause this mmorpg camn out of the books and movies, World of Warcraft camn out the game series before the book and have not made any movies. Lord of the Rings got better graphics then World of Warcraft, but the gameplay is what i need to know about.

It won't be WoW clone because WoW is clone from other games, or it has nothing unique in it, just the best parts of other MMO's.

Well, we could tell everyone that all MMO's in one way or another are clones of pen-and-paper D&D and the Lord of the Rings books. But we may hurt some feelings doing that so we aren't going to.

LOTRO is not a WoW clone. If that's the case then we might as well call each other dirty dirty clones of one another.

Has some similarities? Sure. Clone? Not quite.

I just can't see it being a wow clone, sorry but if it's going to be that linear and well simple it just won't survive.

I know it's already ready been said, but my biggest concern is the fact the Turbine (DDO) and Codemasters (RF Online) are invloved and they were two of the worst games I've played.

I agree. I am so SICK of wow fanbois thinking every aspect of another game is a direct rip off of it. Let me give you guys a hint, WOW in and of itself is a complete RIP OFF of EVERY previous RPG and MMO, from the GD Grass, UI to raiding. You understand? Your game isnt innovative in any sense of measure, it only stole and improved and then mass fed the zerg of drones that rushed to the game because everyone else is doing it.

WarCraft designers ok guys orcs, humans,.. elves? NO!!.. NIGHT elves, yeah ok thats more innovative... ok we need something beefy... MINOTAUR!... wait... no no that would be too obvious we lack innovation... TAUREN!... yeah.. lets throw in a troll and make them jamaican for no GD reason and throw in undead... oh wait nm we dont know how to balance so lets just call them forsaken.

I'd say it's biggest problem is that Turbine has made it. Sure they got some modicum of success with AC back in the 90's but everything since then has been pretty terrible.

regardless of what MMO it resembles most....

If they are smart they will try to market the game to LOTR fans not MMO fans.

There are a lot more fans of the tolkien books and the movies than there are MMO players and since most peope own a computer these days it would do well for them to tap the largest base of consumers which are fans of the books and films.

Whether or not the game is good is irrelevant if they can sell enough copies of the client they can recoup their costs plus a healthy profit before the people who bought it figure out it is shite.

Critical thinking is a desire to seek, patience to doubt, fondness to meditate, slowness to assert, readiness to consider, carefulness to dispose and set in order; and hatred for every kind of imposture.

Then it will be an EQ Clone....far far worse than being a WoW clone.  Please change the Subject of the thread.  Thanks.

Yeah, that's all great, but if you're done spewing stupid from your mouth, please allow me to correct your horribly-inane misconception.

All those races were in previous Warcraft games.  They were not created specifically for WoW, and they certainly have their slight innovations that make them more than just common racial archetypes.  If you were trying to make yourself look like an uneducated boob, then I congradulate your efforts, because you certainly succeded.
