Okay, we all love the MMO, but I think I am done with MMO's for a bit. Kinda bored of WOW and UO for now, but lets list the games that got us hooked, in order (top 5):
1. Zelda
2. Dragon Warrior
3. Phantasy Star (for the Sega Master)
4. Sword of Vermillion
5. Hyde Lyde (damn, forgot the year)
Any other games out there that you recall waking up Early Saturday morning to play?

The Hobbit (ZX Spectrum)
Eye of the Beholder (Amiga)
Syndicate (Amiga)
Realmz (Apple Mac!)
Baldurs Gate (PC)
Just some of my old but great list, but there are so many more that could be mentioned!
The one I enjoyed the most was Lands of Legends and Lore 3. It was the first game to use MMX technology and it seamlessly merged video clips/CGI into the game.
I also played and enjoyed most of the Ultima series and Eye of the Beholder, and Ragnarok on my 64k Spectrum, with all the clever little AI that rembered you and altered their dialogues depending on what you had done.
The Might and Magic series were very enjoyable and Gothic 2 was good.
Vampire Bloodlines is a modern classic.
First rpg I played was Crystalis on the NES, followed by Legend of Zelda. Kinda drew away from 'em after that until FFVII on Playstation. I was hooked from then on
No man is an island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main. any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind, and therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee.

what got me hooked...hmmm...
books did, I read the dragonlance series around the time i first started playing my first MMO.
RPGs ... used to be a big pokemon nut, dragon warrior monsters
I guess i didn't really play any big RPGs before MMOs I sorta just slipped my foot into the door when I heard about it and haven't step out of the room since. I was at my friends house when I first saw an MMO. He was playing asheron's call, something about it just made me HAVE to have it. Just the idea that you could play with other people and it was just like a dream come true to me.
Some RPGs I've played during my MMO craze would be neverwinternights, played a lil diablo, final fantasy here and there
Current: Puzzle Pirates
Waiting: SWTOR,Aion, CO
Played: AC, WoW, SB, EVE
The first RPG that I ever played was Quest64, and it was absolutely horrible. Luckily I gave the genre another chance with Zelda.
I also played a bit of Final Fantasy 7, but I find that game to be severely overrated by the final fantasy fanboys.
Your argument is like a two legged dog with an eating disorder...weak and unbalanced.
My first RPG was Final Fantasy 6 for the snes.
My brother bought it when it first came out.
Though, I really couldn't play it because I kept erasing my brothers game everytime I played.
Then he found Dragon Warrior 1 and 4 at a pawn shop and brought those home...
Dragon Warrior 1 was my first rpg I ever beat..., I can't really tell you how I even beat it... I can remember little bits and pieceing of me playing it.
4 was just too complicated...at a small age.
Neptus - FFXI - Pandemonium
Neptus - WoW - Detheroc
I hated RPG but then I played KOTOR and I thought wow this is really neat, so then I tried out the Elder Scrolls and was hooked. Bring it on down now.

Question everything
Baldurs Gate II.
I have never come across a RPG that I love so much as this game. Its a true classic, and anyone into RPGs own themselvs to play it.
First tried Dragon Warrior, then the first (US) Final Fantasy got me hooked.
The Balder's Gate series was one of the best and had an option they should all pick up on, multiplayer. Oblivion would be one of the all time classics if it had a small multiplayer feature like BG.
I'd have to say Crystalis.
I bought Nintendo Power magazines just to help me with this game. I still love this game.
You can play the game here. Small screen, but neat idea.
