Where the hell have all the good games gone?

I'm just wondering, is it just me or have the vast majority of PC games released this year been total bargin bin bullsh!t? Games in general, not just MMO's. There were a few standouts, Oblivion, Company of Heroes just recently, prolly a few more. But in overall it just seems this year has been a total bust for decent games. Seriously, you know of a really good game post it cause i'd damn sure check it out, as this year so far just seems like a good games drought.

(Granted theres likely some good stuff comming, i'm just refering to so far.)

This is the year of the Dumbed Down MMOs, so simply, anyone can play and takes little to no skill involved.

Hello. I'm new in the forum and about the subject: YES, only a few games worth playing this year. And the worst of all, a lot of hardrive to make them work. I live in southamerica, and trust me, a good graphics card is pretty expensive around here.

About mmorpgs, i started this year to play those more often, but the true is i get  bored pretty quick. i really hate the grind to get to higher lvls, hate the pkers, hate the armor lvl restrictions and mostly, i hate the fact that people actually think that keeping the mouse press is a skill (you need no skill when you play a mmorpg, only a good conection and a bot or two).

If you're planning on getting any up and coming MMO's, you should seriously upgrade. you WILL need to, trust me.

As for games, it might be that people are holding off until Vista and DX10 come out.

FEAR was a bullshit , nicely done bullet time , but boring repetitive game.

OBLIVION thumbs up for graphic breaktrough , but a dumbed down version of Morrowind ? Did we really need that ?

Though year for MMOs in general...

But two great games coming out soon

    NWN2 !!! Yay!!!

    And Ghotic 3

FEAR was best (SP) FPS game I ever played.

But soon Medieval Tota lWar 2 will come out. Omg I can't wait for that game!!
NWN 2 will be ownage. No doubt about that. But I'm not sure about Gothic 3 - I never played Gothic 1 or 2.

Every time I read your post, I die a little inside...

    Totaly agree with the OP.

NWN2, Gothic 3, and Spore are the only Singel Player games comming our way that will be worth to play. IMO.

As for MMOs, yeah, this year has been the dumps. But I think thats because no real high budget MMO companies have released a game. Next year will be better with Age od Conan.

To be fair, isn't it usually the trend that there is really only a couple of brilliant PC games in a year?

  • karlz0rkarlz0r Member Posts: 158
Guild Wars: Nightfall is coming out at the end of next month, that will definetly be another good game.

Your right in that there are normaly only a few standout games a year, but my opnion is that the overall quality of PC games in particular as dropped as a whole this year (so far). I guess i just got a little spoiled, as (IMO) 2001 - 2004 was a steller time for PC games, but has gone downhill since (in terms of quality).

I personally only brought 1 game this year and that was Oblivion, i didn't like it so took it back for store credit as PC games dont get refunds.

Well if we are talking about good games I have only bought and enjoyed one this year and that game was Castlevania: dawn of sorrow for the DS, it single handedly made me never think twice about buying a DS and the game itself was a blast I am looking forward to the FF3 remake coming soon to english speaking shores.

I also need some help from you guys, I recently bought a Xbox 360 and Oblivion (wonderful game, I love it) I bought the game itself from EBgames and bought my 360 from K-mart (K-mart had no Oblivion in stock) The cut-scenes in oblivion (the screens before the main menu and the cut scene when you start a new game have audio and visual lag and it's extremely noticable! This cannot be right. The game itself runs fine (I think) I took the game back and exchanged it for another copy. Same problem! My xbox must be f%cked up so I am taking it back on Thursday. Anyone else experiance problems like this?

Except that the polycounts could've been reduced up to 70% in total. My brother is currently in a mod (its the most antisipated mod to come out at this point) that will take, say, a mast from a boat (currently, if I remember right, 10k polys) to 500 polys. The game was made my moron 3d modelers, no offence to anyone. The game did look GREAT though..but they could've done it in a better way

I thought this year (so far) really was a thumbs down for MMOs. I mean, I thought FEAR was fun..but it wasn't a mmo.

    Games this year where mostly

Oblivion was ok, good gfx and I have a machine to run it almost maxed out, but I didn't really get sucked into it, I think it was missing something.  The best game to come out this year was imo Civ4, shortly followed by Galactic Civ2.

RTS blow, they didn't use to though ... both Dune 2 - Battle for Ariakis and Warcraft were both fantastic games, but they were they first and the genre defining games.  Now I have played the same game over and over and am past bored, I have bought several RTS and they are all the same boring crap, I doubt I could go back to that genre.

As far as mmorpgs go, nothing worth playing came out this year so far imo.

As far as up and coming games, I have several I am waiting for, Savage 2, NWN2, Chronicles of Spellborn, Medieval Total War 2, Spore (dunno if its released this year), and Mark of Chaos as well as another game I don't remember the name but basically you play a bad guy killing heroes and such and you can joy ride sheep, winner!!

I think, or hope the games out at the end of the year will make up for the mostly crap offerings we have had throughout the start of the year ...

I thought there was a few pretty good games this year actually.

Dreamfall, The Longest Journey: I thought was a super game for those into advenutre/puzzle games, I loved it.

Kameo, Elements of Power: Silly game with hours of fun to be had.

Elder Scrolls IV, Oblivion: Obviously, well done game, not my thing in the end but pretty big.

Perfect Dark Zero: Simple fun shooter

Tom Clancy's GRAW: Suprisingly fun for a tactical shooter

Glactic Civ II, Dreadlords: Wicked Space Strat Game

Half Life 2, Episode One: Better then HL:2 IMO but way to short, can't wait for more.

Guiter Hero: Think this was released in late 2005 though, like Nov. or Dec. ? Either way one of those classic games IMO, just way to much fun and highly addictive.

There's been lots of other small games that IMO have done well, games like Prince of Persia: Two Thrones, Hitman: Blood Money and most recently Lego Star Wars II which is so cute and fun it's almost shamefull.

Even when you look at MMO's, it hasn't been all that bad, lots of games have grown and done well for theselves. EQ2 is arguably a much better game now then it was at it's release date, much of the work done of this year, Saga of Ryzom is making a huge bounce back with some worth while game updates and more to come in the near fture. World of Warcraft continues to do well and one could almost argue that SWG is on the mend, for the for 17th million time.

Hate the last 12 months all you want, been a pretty solid gaming year IMO.

So far all the games that have come out this year have sucked badly.

Soon NWN2 will come out tho. It will save this year from horrible games.

  • FulaxFulax Member Posts: 69

    F.E.A.R kicked so much ass.

    *looks at pc games collection*

Hmmm....thats the only pc game I've bought this year o0.

  • jrgambitjrgambit Member Posts: 157
    mmorpgs sucked hard this year.

For single player games, Lego Star Wars II is actually pretty fun.  I know its a "kids" game, but I am really enjoying it.

As other posters have said, NWN2 is coming out this week(?), it definatly looks like one to try.

Hopefully developers stop catering to the lowest common denominator (Cough *oblivion* cough) and come out with decent games.

Dark Messiah isn't even out yet. Oblivion was a complete remake of ES3. It felt like a expansion pack. The only hope I have left is for Dark Messiah to make it before 2007, which I doubt, or NWN2.
