non-consentual but to a point... i mean that by penalties... i think you should be able to fight anybody at any time but by doing so you could be damaging yourself too...

It would largely depend on the game. If I were playing Middle Earth Online, I would not want it to be NONCONENTUAL PVP, because as soon as I seen Hobbits fighting eachother, or Elves killing Hobbits, I would lose interest immediately.
In a game like UO it is fitting and actually made it exciting.
In Everquest it could work both ways. I would hate to have spent hours or even days getting experience and maybe a special item, only to be PK'd and lose what I have spend so much time and hard work obtaining. ( I know there are NODROP items and special rules for this, but this is just an example of what might happen in other games).
In Star Wars Galaxies, I think UNCONSENTUAL PVP areas would be good, especially in places like Mos Eisley and Jabba's Palace.
Same for Dark Age of Camelot, which I think has it very nice. UNCONSENTUAL areas (frontiers) and Battlegrounds, but it would be exciting to be able to infiltrate other realms and cause some havoc.
These are just some examples of what I think would be good and where certain types of PVP would work best. Some people just don't like it. I personally don't PVP alot, I focus more on RP, and sometimes I do RP based PVP which is really fun with the right people. I think games should focus on one thing though. Too many games try to make all different varietys of PVP which ultimately could take away from the experience, because the PVP may not be as streamlined if it were just straightforward. I hope I am making myself clear, I think I might be rambling, to I'm gonna stop here, hehe.

Exactly. I might add that eve online does exactly that and Lineage II too. I'm looking forward to play both of those games since only the thrill of PvP makes aMMORPG addictive in long term to me.

THIS IS WHAT I LIKE TO READ!! LIKE ULTIMA ONLINE BFO UOR CAME OUT
I would like to see full PvP but there should be MANY restrictions on combat, here is one of the important: you can't atack another player without his permition. I'm talking about quest based mmorpgs such as WoW, DAoC not mmorpgs like PlanetSide.
However like someone said a game like MEO wo9uld look funny to have areas of n0on consenual pvp.
But I think it would work in the sense say elf town -rivendale.High level guards all over the place and trolls would be KoS(kill on sight).Same goes for the territory with wandering npc guards.
So if a level 100 troll decides to go grief newbies in elf land alone he would simply get killed by a guard .So he would need to mount a full invasion force to get even near rivendale.
Then you can have high level zones with no guards from anywhere and all can go around killing each other.
Non-consentual PVP but with penalties/restrictions.
Examples:
-a race war game where you can't attack players of your own race unless you wish to be *permanently* marked as a traitor and an enemy to all (losing rights to enter your cities etc.).
-a good vs. evil server.
-no *teams* but you are penalized in some way for constant pk'ing. Crime shouldn't ALWAYS pay like it seems to do in most games.
etc.
Team combat has always been the one I enjoyed most but it has exploits that few games have dealt with properly. Still it's the most overly enjoyable for me and tends to attract a more "mature" community than truly open pvp servers from my experience thus providing the better balance.

Well I like the way DAoC handles their pvp.
