Hows DAoC nowadays?

I used to be a DAoC fan but then i moved on.....still looking for a MMORPG.  And i loved DAoC.  I wanted to start up again but its not fun hunting with no armor and having no money.   Anything new that Mythic has added to help noobs with armor and weapons? Quests? something?

Still the coolest weapons and armor graphics, streamlined spell system and best loot system.  However, the low level game in DAOC is all but dead.  They had a patch last year that allowed any player with a level 50 character to start new characters beginning at level 20.  Killed the low level game.  For levels 1 through 20, you will generally find about four folks, give or take, and any particular level in this range.  Finding group members is a challenge.

I think this game will get pummelled by the new stuff coming out.  With EQ2, Lineage 2, WOW, UO:Odyssey and the likes on the near horizon, I cannot see how this game can maintain its base.  It's going to take some hits.

Recently they increased the drop rate of useble items at lower levels... levelling is fun!

I might be a relative newb to DAOC but I sort of disagee with you Billius.  Until another game implements a PvP enviroment that actually works, is fun to play, and gives you as much customization as DAOC does, I don't think DAOC is going down the tubes anytime soon.  Yes, it will take a hit by the new stuff but I don't think it will be put out of business or pummeled.

I went through this same very thing being a veteran of Age Of Kings {RTS} which is still going strong after six years.  Every year, the next latest and greatest thing was suppose to wipe it out but never did and a LOT of people are playing it now as I type this.  The truth is, when a game gets popular and has something going for it, people don't just jump ship. Mythic isn't stupid. They know new games are coming out in which they will be competing against.  They will have to react and will because a lot of dollars are at stake for them.

Also, I am not saying the PvP in DAOC is perfect by any means. I read quite a lot about the problems with class balances, buff bots {if you consider this a problem or not is your own opinion}, the Realm ability overhall and any problems that TOA created.  It is FAR from perfect but the fact remains that despite these problems and the amout of complaning you hear from die hards, the game is still being played and is addictive.  After spending months and even years building up toons, gaining RAs and hunting for TOA artifacts, I don't see the masses leaving all their hard work and time invested behind for something that "might" be better.

Before buying DAOC, I read so many msg boards and sites that it would make you sick. In order to get research to decide which game I wanted or if I should wait untilt he new stuff comes out. I can tell you that while the new games sound like they will be fun and interesting, they pretty much stick to the old formula of one land mass or "realm", you hunt stuff to lvl and "maybe....just maybe" they will impliment some form of  PvP in the future.  Maybe that is oversimplifying what I read but I didn't find anything I would consider revolutionary in any of the upcoming games that will make me want to drop my DAOC account anytime soon.  But thats just me......

The fact that games such as Horizons, SWG, ect {which were also suppose to wipe the floor with DAOC} are doing luke-warm at best, just makes me realize that you can't always believe the hype.

I think daoc will go on strong for a long time, many mmorpg that were coming out was suppose to ruin daoc, but they all failed ac2, eve online, planetside, shadowbane, swg, horizon. Most of them failed expectations and promised more then was there at release. I myself was bored of daoc for some time and tried out many other mmorpg but they all had some flaw and eventually i had to come back. Daoc has a nice combat system, classes, quests, community (especially), and is not very complicated. Right now daoc is going through a improvement on the rvr and realm ability. It is well worth the time and the fun factor is worth it. Theres something for everyone role players, causal player, hardcore player, explorer, socializer, quester, and the i want to be uber with my big spear.

The only thing that can stop DAOC is Mythic.

Meaning if people who are already sick of the buffbots and hate TOA take another hit, they just may leave for EQ2, WOW or whatever.

But like I said in my above post, Mythic isn't that stupid. They may be greedy but they will do what it takes to keep their accounts and stay on top. After Frontiers and the RA realignment, you can count on more expansions that will keep the game fresh.  There is a lot of balancing issues that Mythic created and people are screaming bloddy murder.  But if these get addressed. it will be better than ever.

The funny thing is, about 10-15% of the people I talk to in the game tell me they played DAOC previously but came back. There is a reason for this.

The reason, Tenebre, is that we (or a lot of us) are hopeless MMORPG addicts trying to get our fix anyway we can until better games like EQ2 and UXO, etc come out.  Like the alcholic who drinks mouthwash, but does so not because he likes mouthwash, but because he hasn't got a bottle of anything better laying about.

DAOC was pretty darned good when its servers were young, but now it's in the stages of holding on to its current clientele, who are mostly very high level.  As I've always said, the best way to gauge the health of a MMORPG is to take a look at its lower level population.  If the low level game is dying, then the whole game is likely dying or at least not doing that great.

I think DAOC has a stable, non-growing customer base (they gain about what they lose probably) but will get slaughtered when the likes of EQ2 comes out, unless they get pretty fancy with the expansions, and even then...

You might be right Billius. Only time will tell. I will agree most of us are addicts.

Most of the people are higher lvls but a lot of it has to do with the lvl 30 command Mythic put in on certain servers who's realms have low populations compared to the other two or just Albion.

You are right though, a lot of people are holding out for such games as D&L, WoW, EQ2 ect. Even a couple of people playing DAOC say they are only playing until one of these games comes out. DAOC likely will take a hit.

But, all I am saying is a lot of current DAOC people won't leave behind their time invested in their toons unless Mythic completly drops the ball and does something to ruin the game more than it already is or if one of the new games comes out with a decent PvP system.  I don't think any of the new games will even intitally have PvP except maybe Linage 2.

People don't play DAOC for the quests or PvE {where it will get blown out by the new games.} The addiction lies in the building up of one's toon to prepare for the realm wars and PvP.

I haven't played in quite some time but I am thinking about doing so in a while.

One thing that I have not found in another game yet is the RvR game play. Now if they would wipe or start a new server without the level 20 or 30 commands, it would fix a lot of problems

  • TenebreTenebre Member Posts: 18

I think there is a couple of servers which do not use the level command.  Mostly the lower pop servers though. You can check the status on the Camelot Herald to find out which servers use it and how many realms per server use it.

I play on Tristan where the Mids get the command but the other two realms do not. It seems like a lot more fun because the BGs are being used,.

I agree with you man , DAoC ROX just play 4-5 a day then you will love it  seems TOA become for fun and more Detaljas I love it GL HF /cheer Midgard

you get a /level 20 no matter what server you are on. It's the /level 30 that is server restricted based on realm population.

I think they have ruined the game by adding the new expansion pack!

I started playing Dark Age when it first came out, and ive done hit level 50 with both a warrior and a thane on the tristan server. In my opinion I dont think DAOC with be able to stand toe to toe with alot of the new mmorpg's comming out. After 2 years of playing, its starting to get boring, and I think mythic even knows this, thats why they are trying to create thier newest MMORPG.

I played DaoC aswell. The fun for me was in the us against them mentality of RvR.
When my group was tired of the treadmill we always went out to kick some butt in RvR.
But it got repetetive and when I left everyone was always RvRing.
But the system is great, if they made DaoC 2 with new graphics and RvR, I would certainly P2P.

DAoC was a great game, one of the better MMORPG's I've played over the years and had some of the best character related feats I've encountered in the genre.

Imo, the biggest mistake Mythic made was to almost solely focus on the highest lvl's, leaving the new characters and players out in the cold. Since the strength of this game is largely made up of RvR and levelling alone is tedious and nearly impossible, you're pretty much a dead weight at lower levels.

DAoC is a great game, and its not going to die anytime soon. But of course I do have to agree with Nihilx. They need to give the lower level characters some lovin too. Give them a few goodies to keep/get them interested in the game. A new lowbie zone or dungeon with good drops or something. Their arn't enough low level characters to make leveling any fun anymore.

What if the hokey pokey really is what it's all about?

As far as toon customization....there is none in DAoC, we all look related and have at the most as like a say earth wizzy- left over points go into ice or fire.....or ice with leftovers in fire or earth......or Nightshade thats pierce, env and stealth OR blades env and stealth......i mean cmon not much customization there.  Anyhow what about the system they are setting up with DE? Higher more evolved AI and customization of the toons and careers there for sure- I think thats teh game thats gonna blow DAoC outta the water  and look at the RvR/PvP system they got goin........you mean i dotn have to  /tap tap excuse me <insert name of realm mate> you just pissed me off, mind if we duel? /looks around for white glove to slap them in the face with...i mean cmon lol let me BS yer arse if you piss me off- realm mate or opposing force image

    Hey all,

I also have been checking out other games, but for now, there arent any games better then DAoC imho.

There are a few whom are almost as good as DAoC tho.  SWG for example has alot to offer, but can not compete in the PvP area yet, that might change in the future, but with Frontiers I think DAoC will stay ahead in the mass pvp area.

Planetside did nice work, but the community isnt so close there, because there is no PvE and that is why people dont have time to make good friends.  In the PvP there you dont have time to make friends really, or chat with new people.

WoW looks nice and all, but atm it looks like ( Mass ) PvP is just an afterthought there, not the endgame, wich makes me a bit sad, since I hoped on mass Alliance vs Horde fights to protect your lands.  Still WoW is about the only real competition to DAoC will get imho.

EQ2? Nah people that like EQ will play and stay at EQ.  EQ2 is not gonna make it imho.

Anyway, DAoC is great, and new players just have to find a guild, then the guild will help.  Leveling is easy if you can get PL from a Necro in the early levels.  If I see a newbie, I will help him, play with him and then recruit him if he/she is cool.

DAoC has the best community and best PVP.

Yepp... I agree with CyberWiz... DAoC ROCKS!!! The graphics are just image, and there's so much things to do. The best thing in DAoC is the PvP, the whole game is built around it, and it works really well.

Overall, DAoC is a combination of image, image, image and somedays even image

Daoc had everything :) shame it only keeps the high level toons occupied with uder loot instead of making it noob friendly and keeping the player base growing. Ask any of the longtime players if they like toa. Most fun and fond memories come from your lowest levels. I would hate to make a level 1 toon now and find a group/direction/advice

I would agree with Panache. It's pretty tough for certain classes starting new in DaoC. If you already have a 15-35 that you're reactivating, then you should be ok. Look for the larger pop servers, and the larger pop quilds, you will need the numbers if you want to do more than ML1 or ML2. Also, some of the artifact hunts require sizable numbers. Don't get me wrong, the game is still somewhat solable, but it's VERY challenging and difficult to do it that way, especially after the ToA expansion. ToA has got a bit better since release, as many bugs have been fixed and overpowered artifacts have been nerfed.

There are still alot of probs with it, it all comes down to how much time you can sink into the game. Once you get into the ToA aspect of it, if you only have 2 hrs a night......it's gonna take you a long, long time to get anywhere.

That being said, I do like the game.....just not as much as I used to. I just tend to avoid the areas I don't like.

    Best of luck to you!
