Well thats a tough question for anyone who enjoys the genre...
But I have had the most fun playing Asherons Call (Darktide)

Yea ..I would have to go with SWG at release,It drew me in like no other Mmo. I was even calling in sick for work to get some play time in but alas those days are over.

    Waiting on Guild Wars 2

I have to agree SWG was an awsome game but the quests end up being the same thing every time and it gets really boring.

    AC1, then AO, then WOW

The favourites I had in the past were EQ and AC2, these days I'm recognizing more and more that mmorpgs are lacking, and that favourite is going to be reserved for the day one comes along that pushes the boundary in every single area, graphics, story, gameplay, pvp, pve and concept.

Your standards are set waaaay too high. You will never have a favorite MMO with that kind of attitude. Never.

I hate the stigma around MMO's. Everyone thinks that theres so much potential to be had in them. But face up to it, theres really not much more they can do. But that's okay, you don't have to have new groundbreaking innovative features to make a good game. MMO's shouldn't be substitutes for real life, they should just be games.

Look at how well the FPS genre is doing. It's changed very little in the past 12 years. How much has FPS's really changed from Doom, other than graphics? Your still killing aliens, collecting keycodes, and going to the next stage. But this genre is still going strong. Why do MMO's automatically have to be different? They shouldn't.

What's the point you ask? Penises penises penises.

    In order of my preference

    1. UO (6 years)
    2. EQ1 (2 years)
    3. DAoC (2 years)
    4. WoW
    5. CoH
    6. EQ2

The rest not really worth mentioning.

Aye, hercules has it right.  EQ1, pre-luclin, was the best MMO experience I've ever had (I never played UO, so I don't want to take away from that game).  But EQ continued to improve with the first two expansions, then it dropped dramatically.  I don't think it's a coincidence that that's the same time Brad McQuaid left the game.

Origional SWG (played for 2.5 years) then SoR (playing for 3 months so far), but I have only played 4 MMORPG's so I am hardly an expert.

I can tell you this, I despise EQ 1 (played for 1.5-2 boring years).

    Ultima Online circa 1999.

It can be played on free servers, but it's not the same experience without the population that the commercial game had.

The best mmo that I've played to date would have to be SWG, when it was good.  The Starwars theme immediately appealed to me and then the community sucked me in.  The game gave you so many options, you could spend hours and hours grinding out your professions one day and then the next you could spend and entire day picking a spot for your house and decorating the inside.  You could fight along side a Jedi in the DWB or while running the Corvette missions and then take a break and go fishing for hours.  Even the JTL expansion was awesome.

I have played a bunch of mmo's since SWG and have yet to find one that i enjoy as much as that one.  I am currently playing WoW and it is great, but its just not as wide-open and customizable as Starwars was and if I don't find a guild or group of friends who play at the same time as me I'm going to get bored of it fast.

OLD SWG, Nge is total bogus compared to pre-cu or even cu.

    {(RIP)} SWG

Only two worth noting for me - DAoC, then WoW. Why DAoC first? Maybe because I was only 12 or 13 when I started that game, after finally getting sick of D2 and CS, and because my mental capacity at the time was so little that I thought a horrible game was the best thing in the world. Though, the RvR back then was amazing, and it impressed me, and still does, even till today. I'm about to quit WoW, haven't been on it for 3 weeks even though I was raiding strong and one of the head priests of the guild. It's just too much of the same thing, especially the PvP. There is no drive in WoW to PvP, other than to get 'exhalted' with a certain faction so you can buy uber items. Since nothing in WoW PvP actually made a difference to a faction as a whole, say if Southshore was under attack (and regularly is), only a few defenders would actually go out there, and usually lowbies or level 60's just looking to kill time.

In DAoC however, while PvP rewards gave you new skills that you could use, there would be times when the entire faction's population (or at least a good majority) came to protect our relic keep, which housed relics that, while ever so slight, gave factions who held the relic an advantage over the others, as a whole, whether PvP or PvE. Also, having more frontier keeps under your control gave you access to a PvP dungeon, Darkness Falls, which housed some of the toughest, but most rewarding monsters in the game.

I guess it just comes down to WoW's PvP being a boring grind that is meaningless to everyone else but yourself, and you find yourself competing with others in your own faction, while DAoC's PvP felt much more fulfilling and meaningful.

    Pre NGE SWG.
  • OhaanOhaan Member UncommonPosts: 568

    Top two:

    1) UO - Pre Trammel. 'Nuff said.

    2) AC1 - Level based but monthly content and story were great.

    Bottom two:

    1) EQ1 - Played for 10 days, my intro to the grind.

    2) DAoC - Wanted to RvR. Not grind for 2.5 months to get there.

  • UO - was my first mmorpg and nothing can beat that feeling. if you have played pc games your hole life and experience that kind of technology for the first time it almost makes you cry ^^

AO - well it doesnt really differ from the other mainstream mmorpgs out there even though its sci-fi but it has incredible depth. much more than any other mmorpg i have played.

WWIIOnline - probably the coolest concept i have seen so far. and it requires real skill. havent seen a game so far that is closer to real war.

I wouldn't say so at all, do you not recognize how simplistic the gameplay is everytime you play them? Do you not recognize it is the same continuous process of kill mob next mob with little imagination? There IS a WEALTH of potential in mmorpgs and we will see this over the next 10 years.
