Laptop

Anybody use a laptop for playing games? I've heard (last year or the year before that) that laptops were horrible for gaming. But now I've seen some that look like theyd be better, and I know some people that use a laptop regularly for everything, which is what I'm thinking about doing!

the only thing ive heard that may be bad for gaming is the screen, something with the refresh rate, leaves a ghost behind in faster games. other than that the video cards seem to be getting better and better. it amazes me than when i look my my huge desktop that something almost as good can be fit in a space... thats alot less!

and heres another question: whats the point of pentium-m/ amd's mobile processors? i was puttin together a dell laptop for fun, and to upgrade from a pentium-m 1.4 ghz to a 1.7 cost $400! and 1.7 still isnt to fast. i just dont see the reason to use that as apposed to a desktop processor. is it cooling or something?

even though laps have become much better for gaming, you still have the basic lap problems.

    lack of cooling
    burning lap
    refresh rate

www.ibuypower.com has the "battalion laps" which look badass

also look for centrino, they're known to use less power, and not burn your lap as bad

There was actually a true story about a year or two ago reported by Reuters about a guy who burned his groin by holding a laptop on his lap and using it for a few hours. Not sure how severe the burns were but it's still something to think about if you have a lappy.

The moral of the story is: if you have a laptop, don't use it on your lap. Use a coffee table. image

It is quite simple you can play games with a laptop but certainly not near the performance you can get with a desktop.

Reasons to buy a laptop for gaming is simple- travelling a lot!

Unless you live in one room then I see no reason to get one over a PC other then like I stated you move around a lot.

Maybe that's why they are called notebooks now, to prevent people from sueing from the misleading name image.

I never knew that you could actually burn yourself with an overheating notebook.  I have played some games on notebooks before and I haven't had problems.  The most stressing game I ever played on one was the sims.  Not too harsh on the video card or anything, but it's a pretty big game.
