DaoC? Worth the effort?

Hey, kinda new here. Reading a lot of posts here and I notice that many of you guys recommend DaoC. Why is this? I considered it when it first came out and heard bad things about it which caused me to make me decide not to try it. Currently I'm playing ffxi and have experience with a bunch of others. Would it be worth my time to start playing it now with all these new games coming out? I'm afraid of starting only to have a better game come out which takes away most of the community and feeling like I've wasted my time.image

Personally I hated DAoC, didnt even finish the free month, but to each his own I spose.

i played daoc for a couple years, fact i still am. its a fun game with lots of great ideas. mainly the combat system, which isnt like most, where you click and attack and then kinda hope you win. its active combat, so you have tons of options in every battle youre in. my only problem is that i live in japan and i cant make all the primetime stuff, because thats like 7-10am for me and im at work. and for the new expansion, you need lotsa help to get it done, and if you dont have it done, youre crap in the realm vs realm part of the game. ToA ruined dark age for me. =

but thats ok, cause i was going to leave it for CoH anyway. =D

i well sugest you wait on one of the MMORPG's that are comming out soon, sins it is really only the end game that is running in DAoC now and it well take a good player about 1 mounth to 2 to get there, but once you are there it is proberly a good game.

Intersting combat he has with FF XI allready. I stopped playing FF XI atm but nothing beats it's combat system. (renkei!!)

I like FFXI better. Better combat, better quests and missions, and just plain more fun. One thing is a given though, FFXI is truly a group game, if you dont enjoy playing with others all the time then I can see why someone wouldnt like it. DaOc is more solo friendly, but I find that boring.

DAoC was a wonderful game during the early years.  Currently though, players are competing against players who have nearly unlimitted resources and opimal characters and groups.  DAoC's shining point was RvR battles between players fighting a capture the flag game.  But there's no way a new player would be able to compete in it in a reasonable ammount of time.  A good year or so, and you'll be up to speed.  But by then, who knows what the game will be like.

If they started a fresh server I would highly recommend it.  Joining an existing server might be fine, but don't expect to contribute greatly to the realm war.

Lasted me just over the free month, then had me wondering "What the heck is fun in this game?"

I love Daoc and would tell anybody to give it a try if they're looking to waste sometime till the new mmorpgs come out.   I mean it's only 20 buck for Daoc and SI, and comes with a free month!!!  However if playing ot play isn't your thing, and your looking for something permainate then I would wait for one of the next gens to come out and honeslty if you're really looking for somethign to do you can always reaserch the new games.  I don' t know about you but I don't want to spend 500 dollars to find out which game is right for me.

You can do two things in life:

    1. Move on, or
    2. umm... not move on.

Personally, I am in favor of moving on, but either has its highs and lows. Whether DAoC was or is a good game is one issue. The other you should consider (and it sounds like you have) is whether it is worth starting so late in the life of a game.

DAoC was the game I innocently bought at the game shop, not knowing anything about MMORPGs (let alone MMO's) and was from that point on completely sold and addicted to the genre. I like to think I started my online life as a Nightshade and that initial experience has influenced every decision I have made since. Gah, personal pfaff.

There is heaps for you in DAoC. I highly recommend it as a game. There are some bits I didn't like but it is a pretty darn good game. You want to be pretty comfortable with the idea of spawn camping and PvP. I loved the mythical and legend basis for the realms and really enjoyed doing the quests. However, I think you should either play a recently released game (be very picky, don't just automatically go for SWG) or stick with regular computer games.

Although I hate to say it, you should check out SWG. Otherwise, there are plenty of other splendourific MMORPG's on the "upcoming" list. Many of them look horrisquibbly impressive.

There are a few things must be into to really enjoy DAOC (questing, lore, team-based PvP, etc).  I for one loved it and played it for years.  DAOC is the only MMORPG I've ever played that I thought did questing the right way.

Quests are made for a certain level, and have a reward that is worth it for that level of a character.  Everyone in the group will get an advance in the quest and the quest piece needed will apear in all of the inventories.  This helps alot with the fighting over quest npc's.  There are a few rare spawns though that take a bit of waiting around for, but nothing like EQ was.

They also did a good job on the lore, making stories for you to get into.

Most classes are able to solo for experience, although experience will be much slower solo than in a group (as it should be).  There are a couple classes in the game that can solo just fine all the way to 50 also (necro).

They made the PVP side of the game semi-optional.  (to really have a well rounded character you would need to have done some pvp to buy the realm skills)  But they also made seperate battlegrounds for lower level character to pvp in free of higher levels.  (although some are pretty empty now)  For a fullfilling PvP side of the game, there also needs to be a pretty good balance in populations between the three realms.  That donesn't usually happen however.  Some servers are better than others.  I've seen some amazing, huge battles while playing DAOC.  Ones that went on for a good ten or fifteen minutes.  I've never seen anything like them in any other MMORPG that I've played.

The crafting system is a bit boring and repetitive, so they don't get a good score there.  There is a demand for player crafted armor and weapons though.

Agreed, it was an awesome game, still is if you can catch up with everyone else.

I played DAoC for nearly two years, finally recently packed it in.

ToA really hurt this game. Even if you like PvE (a LOT of PvE) the encounters are often still so bugged that they are an exercise in frustration. Yes, they are working hard to fix this, I will give them that, but the product was basically released as an early beta. Many of the changes they added in ToA have had to be drastically changed due to a lack of forethought or planning.

I loved the game. I loved the idea. I miss it, in a way. But not in it's current incarnation.

I gave the 7 day trial a try image. Unfortunately, I think final fantasy XI spoiled me with it's graphics because DaoC gave me a headache while playing it. I'll admit that I love the wide selection of pet classes (my favorite job image), but I think I'll stay with FFXI for a bit. Keeping my eyes on WoW to see how it turns out before I give it a try. Thanks for all the responses. image

For some strange reason I really enjoyed DAoC. I played for near on 12 months and put quite a few hours in to it. I had a 46 Huntress at the end and she was a lot of fun to play particularly in PvP even after the great archer gimping!

I think the whole key with DAoC is you have to like PvP or RvR as they prefer to call it and you have to have a guild that has some clue about how to use thier combined powers. There are very few successful long term soloists in DAoC, it just does not lend itself to cowboy heroism. When your guild/race whatever sucessfully spends an 8-12 hours session pushing deep into another realm, taking and holding ground as you go it is one of the most satisfying expereinces I have had in an MMO. The drama comes in getting to that level. Below L20 you are basically fodder... and getting past L30 takes time and grinding on a very EQ style play level.

I play MMO's for one main reason and that is adventure and discovery. Once I have seen 90% of the lands and monsters a game has to offer the novelty wears off real quick for me. DAoC had just enough after exploring to keep me happy for 12 months but no more. If you like PvP and you enjoy guild style operations then you will probably like it. If your a soloist/adventure type you will probably get bored fairly quickly.

Knowing what I know now I would be more likely to play Horizons than DAoC, if CoH wasnt coming out that isimage

I am somewhat of a Bull$shitter myself, but occasionally I enjoy listening to an expert. Please go on.
