Comparative Indirect Competition... What the crap is THAT supposed to mean? Well, it is method to allow players to compete against each other in a strictly PvE sense.
Three areas of the game world are connected through feedback gained from a behind-the-scenes leaderboard. Two of those areas are combat zones, one for the good side and one for the evil side. The third area is a non-quest area such as a town or whatever. If players enter a combat zone by talking to an NPC questgiver, he will fight against AI mobs and so forth, either by himself or with a group while attempting to achieve a goal. It could be a raid on enemy territory for supplies. It could be an assassination mission to kill an enemy general. It could really be anything called for in the related plotline. Now a player who is a member of the evil side who talks to his side's questgiver will enter the same combat zone the same way, and attempt to achieve his own goals which typically would be a counter-objective to the good side.
The non-quest area tied to these combat zones would be affected by whichever side has achieved its objective the most. If good is on top, then the area might be peaceful and safe. If evil is dominating, it might be crawling with evil nasties (Oh, no! Not the Evil Nasties!). If the sides are tied, the area may have Good NPCs fighting Evil NPCs.
With a healthy scattering of these contested zones throughout the gameworld, players from opposing factions could struggle for territorial control of key areas without having to resort to the typical gankfests associated with PvP. Not that PvP is really a bad thing. It would just be nice if there were a way to ensure that EVERYONE who partakes of it does so in a manner that is consistant with the lore of the gameworld rather than an excuse for Pwnage...
I understand that many PvPers will find such a system as I have described above boring. But I also am of the opinion that many PvEers will find it a fascinating way to compete against an opposing force that is influenced by player actions

I find it amazing that by 2020 first world countries will be competing to get immigrants.
I think its dumb. It gives the player very little control over the circumstances. It lacks that human interaction that makes competition what it is.
Like lets say you have to take control of an area by your faction collecting 700 pelts first (cough cough WoW's new world strategic point system). I think the majority would agree that farming PVE monsters is no fun, and just having a constant PVP conflict in certain zones to obtain control during different times of the day would be alot more fun.
This just lacks what makes good competition; strategy, and a definitive outcome. This type of competition just makes me feel like I am trying to bribe the judge into liking me better.

First of all, let me clarify something. This hypothetical system is not intended to REPLACE PvP in an MMO. It is intended to provide a form of PvE play that exhibits some competitive aspects. Those who would want to PvP still could, but those who want no part of it, but still want to choose a side could do that as well.

Okay... Imagine this: The Comparative Indirect Competition could even be used to set up the PvP element. For example, if it is a fortress, whichever faction has the highest number of completed objectives associated with that fortress would control it (if that faction's player enters the fortress as a PvP player, he is on the defending side.
So there is now a PvE and a PvP layer for essentially the same content. Both types of player can enjoy it.

hmmm. Interesting analogy.
