Flyboys

Saw this movie today and it's really good.

Lots of world war I aviation dogfighting with good computer special effects.

It doesn't have any big name stars which is good cause the story and the quality of the dogfighting are the stars.

No, incorrect. The Red Baron is not portrayed in this movie.

That's where the term originated, combat between planes which involved a series of tactics to gain an advantage over the other thru positioning.

Please explain the two red Focker Wulfs then.

Afaik, only the red barons units painted their biplanes red - And only the red baron painted it completely red. The rest just painted a part of their FW red.

So either the director haven't done his homework and thougth that every german plane was red, or els he just want to tribute Manfred von Richtofen by giving every german pilot a copy of his plane.

Ever heard of the red baron? He's quite famous. Heck, he's one of the more noticeable personas when talking about world war I.
He had 74 confirmed air to air kills.

By dog fights i thought you ment the kind that were in world war 2
where planes shot at each other rather than in world war 1 where they
shot at each other with pistols and mounted machine guns.

planes didnt do much in world war 1 other than reconesence which was
usualy no use beacuse of poor weather conditions. such as in the battle
of the Some where the reconesence found no usefull information at all.

ive heared of him but i thought the air battles in world war 1 were not so much dog fights but more of a get along side of them and fire at each other rather than the acrobatic dog fights of world war 2.

A normal design for bi planes in world war 1 had two seats. 1 for the pilot, 1 for the gunner.

It is not possible to mount an machinegun, so that the gunner would get a 360 degree shot, while being equally effective no matter what direction he looked at. Hence, position was important, using blind spots of the enemy to your advantage.

Wrong, many of the tactics used in world war 1 aerial combat are still employed today.

The Immelman turn and Boelske(sp) rules of engagement.

If your beef with the movie is this minor historical fact, I say get over it. In the movie the allied Americans were instructed they could add a logo to their planes, which is also mostly historically incorrect. The Germans for the most part were the only ones allowed to paint their planes with individual logos and colors. There were some exceptions on the allied side but they were rare.

Either you enjoy the subject matter of the film or you don't. I am still trying to figure out wether you have seen it or not. I am just recommending it for those who are interested in this kind of a movie theme.

I didnt say they weren't. What i did say was that the fights in world war 1 werent the same as they were in world war 2. Yes they did use some of the same tactics as they did in world war 1 but the type of fighting in world war 1 wasnt like the type of fighting in world war 2. Tactics do remain the same over thousands of years. Blitzkreig could be applied to tactics used with cavelry in 1300s. Please read what i say rather than trying to disprove me.

I want to see it.  Sounds like a cool movie.  I love war films, especially navy ones.  Das Boot is my favorite of all times movie!!!

Movies with none or few big name actors in it are the better ones.
This looked good in the previews, I just didn't know if it was one of those movies that make it look good in the previews.

I'm going to go see this now...
Since you all said it was pretty damn good.

it definitely looks like they made wwi a lil more interesting looking.

you can read about how the air combat looked from the ground, sounds pretty amazing.

Not so true...They started calling themselves "Knights of the air" mid way through the war.  At the begining yes, they pulled up beside each outer and took several pistol shots at each other.  As technology improved, machinguns were added.  Recon aircraft were some of the most deadly with up to three vickers on them, one mounted on top the wing, and the back seater had one or two (depending on unit) with a 200 degree swing.

Note:  Alot of allied loses were due to the fact of gunners shooting their own tails off.

The germans perfected the "sync" gear that alowed them to shoot throgh the prop, wich reduced the rate of fire somwhat.  And thus allowed them to perfect ACM in WWI--ACM...Air Combat Manuvers.

The movie has sever historically correct areas...along with several hollywood add ins.  Like the three choices one had if his aircraft caught fire....Jump...burn...or shoot yourself.  Same results.  Parachutes were not standard issue back then.

And for the record...The Hat in the Ring squadron was an american unit...highest ace Eddie Rickenbaucker.

And most units would paint distenguishing markings, this time frame was a time where they were going from "Horse and wagon" to Trucks and Tanks.  And alot of "Old school" pride translated into the air corps.

But them fly boys back then had guts...you took off in a hand built balsa wood aircraft covered in canvas and dope (dont light a match) and their engines used castor oil.  Talk about steady bowl movements, for the engines leaked oil real bad (no seals/gaskets)  But they flew anyway in the worse weather...in an open cockpit!  And no armor, their seats were lick a wicker chair with no legs.  Pull too many G's and the wings snaped.  If your engine died, you died, glide rate sucked on them somthing like one foot foward, 10 feet down.

And then the landings...what fun they must have been!  The aroedomes (airfields) were farmers fields!  and they were bumpy as hell!

I'm glad to see this turned into an historical debate about the flight tactics of WW1. Let's put it this way...WW1 was the boring war that noone cares about, then WW2 happened. Simple enough, right? Hell, they had zeppelins in WW2, screw planes.

Oh, and I saw Jackass 2 this weekend and it was just as disgusting and entertaining as the first.
