Some games are released , they are played for a month or two and never heard from again. Some games tend to be a little more special, enter Subspace. For over 7years this little known mmo set in outer space has been treking along bringing in countless players from every corner of the earth and giving them an oppurtunity to befriend each other, and then sadisticaly hunt , kill , smacktalk , and wtfpwn each other over and over.
Its a simple enough game, with simple easy to grasp controls, infact you can fire up the game for the first time and basically jump headlong into things without to much difficulty, although the learning curve is a peice of cake, actually becoming skilled at the game is another matter entirely, and therein lies the overwhelming appeal of this competition based gaming community.
A bi-yearly competitive league system which is run by volunteer staff helps give this game much of its appeal, it gives the players a chance to form strong bonds within there "squad" where teamplay is the only road to success against the 10-15 other squads which may be struggling to claim the championship of there respectfull league.
With other game features such as and extremely intuitive and smooth chat system , the ability to run on basically any machine out there and the ease of being able to fire up the game, blast away some enemys and then hit the bar on a weekend, it remains one of the most appealing games to be found, especially for students who dont have the time or maybe the high end machine to jump into games like Eq2 and World of Warcraft.
If you think you have what it takes, if you have the guts, and you like blowing up people your never going to meet, then www.trenchwars.org is the next stop for you!

Looks like the Ur Quan masters. Meh...I'll check it out.
*edit*
Subspace is freeware and is the longest-running massively
I know where this is heading.multiplayer internet space combat game in the world. And we're looking
for new blood...
Please keep in mind that Subspace is an intricate game that takes years
to master. If the information presented seems overwhelming, we've also
created a one page quick reference guide (pdf) that you can printout and keep next to you while playing.
On second thought...maybe not.
After playing this game for over 6 years, I can't recommend it enough. Not only is the gameplay great and still balanced and fun after all this time, but the community is excellent too. There is an intense level of competiveness but also a high level of honor and camaraderie, which makes for a unique dynamic that seems unmatched by any other online game.
Also, being 100% skill based, the only thing that makes you better than someone else is you. So even if you play causually, you'll still be on equal footing with the guy that plays 100 hours a week.
There are multiple multiple modes of gameplay, comprised of 8 unique ships, different zones with different settings, and different games within those zones. The most popular zone is SSCU Trench Wars, and it's a great place to start for beginners.
Hope to see you in the game!

I've played this game. It deserves to be called an MMO just as much as GW deserves to be called an MMO.
A Work in Progress.
Add Me
its fun. the main problem is once you start you can't stop, its addictive. The best
place to find out and get the game is the getcontinuum.com site. A bit of history of the game, the games 10th aniversery is next year. It was the first MMO (Massivly Multiplayer Game) and one of the creater of the game is credited with inventing the phrase. there quite a bit on wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SubSpace_(computer_game) for people interested in the history of the game.

Listen Asmodeeus, seven years ago, Ultima Online didn't even have those pathetic "quests" that you refer to or those "professions" of ninja, samurai, necromancer, and paladin. Nor did it have any of the neon crap, or bug mounts. It didn't even have any "combat moves." You turned on attack and jousted with simplistic swings. It was a better game then. if you can't guess why then just uninstall the thing and move along. - Crabby

But it turns out I'm actually still addicted, I just can't admit it. Man, how did you figure it out?

man that show was awesome.
"Thanks Mike, Peter in Red came in first with 48000 points, Jill in Purple came in second with 42000 points, and John in Blue came in 3rd with 12000 points."
"Alright, thanks Moe."
You know what pisses me off? Why the hell did children's game shows always use such huge numbers for the points? By the end of the show, every hade a bajillion points. Another thing that pissed me off about Guts is the fact that it didn't matter how you did up until the Astro Krag...whoever got to the top first got like 28 million points and won.
