FFXI?

Well, because of my AMAZING stroke of luck on Friday that had to do with me finding a $100 bill in the gutter of a busy intersection, I am now considering getting a new MMO.

I have heard lots about this game, and I hink it seems petty nice for someone who likes to group.

I have about 1 hour free time every day to play, and I really like the find a group and play concept so evident in games like WoW and GW. But due to the game's community and bad marketing decisions (Blizzard whoring the WoW phenomenon, GW allowing players to literally 'buy skills'), I really have no desire to go back to them.

But before I make my final decision, I would like to know a thing or two more about this game:

Exploration: Any good? I like seeing what the gameworld has to offer, and discovering new places with people in my group. but in games thee days, it seems like this sandbox aspect is being thrown away and now developers are giving way to a more storylike, 'no time to do that!' sort of gameplay.

Community: BIG thing for me. I got to be able to find a knack and have at least a few guildies to group with at all times. Is finding a guild easy, or is it more of a 'under X level not allowed' sort of thing that reigns in today's PvP games? Other than that, is the general public pretty nice?

Playability: Due to high school, I don't have as much time as I once had. I love games that require time to actually get the whole in-depth experince but is it excessive in this game? Can I be on four an hour or less and still feel like I accomplished something?

And finally, I would like to know if the Xbox 360 version is worth getting. My computer is pretty much dead (on my dad's laptop atm), and my 360 is in a pretty convenient place. I like not having to worry about the viruses and download errors computers usually have (especially mine), and console gaming is so casual.

Thanks!

You won't even be able to find a group in this game in an hour.  Save your money, FFXI is a PoS.

I've not played FFXI but I've read/heard that it's not a game you can really put an hour into and achieve a lot. But grouping is a big focus in the game. If you're at all interested in the theme of superheroes/villians you might want to check out City of Heroes or City of Villians. It's made for a more casual crowd, the community is overall great, and you'll always find players looking for groups to do missions.

    Dont bother with FFXI.

Instead... save that $100 for college... lmao

The community can be alright, if you find a good guild (linkshell), but most of the people you will group with (if you can find a group) will be on their 3rd+ jobs, and will have uber gear, and will act like elitist snobs and wonder why you don't have uber gear yet.

The economy is completely messed up. I played quite a while back, and while I did have to farm quite a bit to get enough money for all the gear I wanted, it was nowhere NEAR as much as now. I went back for a while to try it again, and this is the kind of thing I saw... Items that I used to farm were fairly similar prices. Maybe a bit more, only up to 4x more (on items that level 75s now mass-farm on mobs with higher drop rates than the ones I could kill), though. Gear that I wanted, and consumables that I needed were 10X (!) or higher in price.

And more often than not, it took longer than an hour to even find a group.

An hour a day won't get you very far in that game. I'd say... don't bother, like the rest of the people, but I thought I'd give actual reasons.

    Good luck.

I have to admit that I never made it to the end-game of ffxi, my argument is that doing so would be more boring than a normal human being can endure. Usually when I play a game like this I get 2 weeks in and the grind sours the game a bit, I made it 3 hours on ffxi. The game has many flaws and the 360 version is not immune to any of them. The game lags attrociously (the 360 version proving that its bad code as opposed to graphics lag). There is a merciless grind from level 2 onwards, the learning curve is also harsh but once you get the hang of that (90mins-2hrs) you realise that rewards (skills, armor etc) are so far apart that they dont seem worth the effort.

Long story short -- merciless grindfest that will put you off FF forever.

This game is like the anti casual MMO player game.  I played for 8 months and getting a group can be sooooo frustrating.  I played a couple years ago when the population was higher and the gold farmers hadn't taken over and it still took hours to find a group at the higher lvls.  It sounds like COH could be what you're lookin for play on freedom or Virture and you can get a group within 5 mins of logging on many times and 1 hour is actually enough time to accomplish things.  Back to FFXI, like others have said it has the worst grind short of Lineage 2 on the web and the reward for all your trouble isn't enough.  When you max out a toon you get your final armor you look like everyone else that plays that class.  Combat was the deal breaker for me, I tried to play the red mage but you are required to do certain moves over and over, I mean no freedom, the red mage is supposed to be a hybrid but if you try to melee many groups won't even take you, you have to stand back and cast the same 3 moves over and over for hours on end and most likely won't even get part of a level finished.  The worst is when you get in a group and something bad happens and you have to wait for another it could be hours before you get a chance to gain anyting again.  Buyer be warned it killed FF for me forver.

Aren't the servers in Japan too?

I haven't heard of anyone who has played this game for more then 3 months.  If you like FF series, definetly don't get this game.  Its nothing like a true FF game.  Also the Grind in ROSE is 4 times worse then Lineage 2.

They are but they're NEVER down unless they're updating them and that happens at the end of the month.
You play with the Japanese, Europeans, Chinese....whoever they have translated for. Everybody is together.

I've been playing it for almost two years now...
I take a break every now and then because I have a lot of stuff to get done before this game comes to my attention. But yeah what everybody has said so far..., getting a party can be a hassle... but that's why you MAKE a party instead of waiting around doing absolutely nothing.

The economy is messed up....., yeap...
The Gil Sellers ruined the game...
They totally dominated it. The price for newbie gear nowdays is very high...., I was running around the other day in Sandoria and saw a lot of new characters around level 10 still using the armor and weapons they receive when they start.

If you can hit level 50+ the game gets x2 better than before.
The game is really fun later on...
I have a level 75 samurai/thief and it's really fun to be able to do all kinds of stuff.
The latest Expansion set made it better for level 75s because they added more fun for us to do.

You must have time on your hands in order to play this game though. One hour a day? Nope.
One hour will get you somewhere..., but you really can't just get up and leave during the middle of the party.

    It's only 20 dollars I believe....
If you can get sometime to play it...., then I suggest giving it a shot.
    This game deserves it.

Well I m thinking about returning .. The major problem is my lvl 60 characters have been deleted and nobody I know is playing anymore. Half are in Vanguard beta and the other half scattered across the MMORPG worlds. Tried each of the games they played , just couldnt get into them.

We quit about a year ago when silk hit a record high of 2k , and gear was super expensive. We had 3 mule characters each , (all lvl 15 thieves) , we had to empty those characters just to survive. It was so bad and everyone was farming silk.

I finally left , but it was always good time before then .. Took 3 hours to find a party in the dunes , if you werent a ninja or white mage. But a white mage or ninja or even warrior could get into any party.

No solo after 10 though .. once I first started I tried to solo a too weak and got owned, O.o

I feel like a fool for playing for eight months.  One side note if you do happen to leave for awhile, guess what Square Soft will ask you to REPURCHASE the game many times, thats right no ressubscribing from  what I can tell.  If your curious of that check out the website, no areas to simply resub.  The other issue with this game, many of the players left are in Japan which isn't the bad per say, but the language barrier is.  If you don't speak japanese except to get passed up for grouping in many cases.  This isn't really because your American its because this game requires alot of communication and if you can't communicate its hard to group.  As others have said the gold farmers have ruined the game its sad really when it was newer nothng was better than getting that rare drop from a hyper monster but as time passed the gold farmers ruined that also.  Its funny gold farmers destroy the economy driving the prices through the roof then players go to them and buy gil(in game gold) for real money to fix the problem that those same people caused.  FFXI R.I.P....

    Hope this helps...

FF11 is a huge dissapointment, regret every day that I bought the damn thing when it came out.  Few friends bought it along with me and the game wasn't cool even with them.

Try WoW if you havent already. There is a myriad of f2p games and always a small chance you might get hooked on one, thats why i even look in their direction.

Save that money and buy yourself a 360 or a Wii :)

I played FFXI for a year and a half.

Grouping is a HUGE part of FFXI unless you're a Beastmaster which is mainly a Solo class.

I had a lvl 70DRG/35WAR With the Gae Blog (the only Uber gear I can get for free) and a 70RDM/35/BLM the only Uber gear i had was my small midget person (I tink they were called Tarutaru's).

FFXI isn't really made for an hour a day, more less 4+ hours a day.

The only bad thing about it is the gil sellers and MPK'ers (Monster Player Killers, that kill other players that get to close to ther claimed monster or drag other monsters to a a team tackling a monster and team wipe everybody). The GM's been trying to crack down on it but the last i heard they don't really care as to my knowledge.

I would suggest a more casual game like City of hero's/Villian's. Or wait until Janurary when Crysis's and vanguard come out or Wait until Fallen Earth comes out.

FFXI takes alot of personal time this i can contest too, and competition amongst other ppl as well.
