Best TS MMORPG - please advise...

Hey there!

This thread is for me and all the other tradeskill fanatics out there who feel a bit "underserved" in the big world of MMORPG's and are still looking for that one game that really has it all.

The core question:
What online rpg has the best tradeskill system?

Tha particulars:
When I (and others like me) say "has it all" I don't just mean a game in which you can craft items of various natures. I mean a game that incorporates that possibility into a much larger frame of a selfsustaining in game economy. I am not happy with just being able to craft my QL 200 elven fire bow (or whatever), I would like to see a game in which that is only the start. A game in which, in time, one would be able to start entire product lines and factories and sell the goods to large quantities of people.

I am looking for a game where going the path of opening up a business is a true alternative to going out and slaying mobs. A game where it is possible to open up a bar, a restaurant, a weapon shop, a tailor store, a pharmacy, a hospital, (insert your idea here). A game, where you can employ other players if your business grows too big to be handled by yourself. In short, a game where the players themselves make up the entire economy.

So, what's the point of this thread? Well, I am just curious if I am the only one waiting for a game like that. Also, I wonder if there maybe is a game like that out there and I just don't know about it. If so, please, by all means, let me know, because I am quite tired of pretty much all games I know. Let's be honest, most of them are just sophisticated versions of the tamagotchies...

*Shudders* I'd say SWG and Ultima Online have the ability to open shops and so forth. I'd stick with ultima online if you can manage the graphics. im probably not much help :D

I'd say ultima online probaly. Most games out there right now have tradeskilling as more of a "mini game" than anything.

I have to agree, UO is really the only game that has what you are looking for. Right now there isn't alot of that thing out there but wait for some things to come out and you might be pleasently surpised.

Age of Conan is going to have a detailed and involved enough crafting system that it might fit the bill for you.

You will need to play the game a bit to get to the crafting part of it though

Funny you suggested UO. I never played it because of the old graphics, but I read and heard that it has a pretty complex economy. I might try it, although I am hoping for some new and nicer looking titles to come out soon.
Is the UO community still big and strong or is it dying out, with me being the only one on the server if I started it now?

    @Angyl

Any idea which titles might "surprise me pleasently"? I try to keep my eyes peeled for new games that cater to my whishes, but so far I failed to find any. In fact, all the reviews i read about the most anticipated upcoming title, Age of Conan, don't mention anything about tradeskills and economy at all, only great PVP, which frankly, I don't give two rats bottoms about.

Really? Can you link any reviews where that is talked about? I must have missed those...

I wasn't really refering to anything in particular, however the current development trend seems to be making innovative game systems. If you are lucky hopefully something will go your way, I also would be willing to be that you are not the only one that is looking for something of that style. If PvP is not important to you you might have a slightly harder time, you may find yourself being forced to adapt and that can be an uncomfortable position for any gamer to be in.

    gladly:

community release talking about the crafting system Here

Everything ever said in the public forums on the subject here

No third party reviews have yet been released on the system, probably because its still in closed Beta

Yes, like some of the above. Ultima Online has huge crafting going on. Try it, and if you don't like the graphic, don't worry, next year we get a total graphic overhaul. :)

I don't like saying this.. but imho, Eve has the best player run economy.
You have manufacterers, researchers, miners, and they all depend on each other to make items.
Most of the items are player made aswell, And you can avoid combat without gimping yourself in the process.

Eve online has the best economy for trading in any MMORPG.

I'm so impressed... EVE wasn't mentioned at all on the first page.  New record? Most assuredly yes.  But yeah EVE is probably your best bet.. It's got pretty much everything you asked for but you won't have a physical store persay just because of the lack(see nonexistance) of avatar play.
