Jumpgate has just turned five years old, and to celebrate, NetDevil is going to be adding some new features to the game:

NetDevil Celebrates 5th Anniversary of Jumpgate

Louisville, CO – September, 26 2006 – NetDevil, Ltd., developer of the MMOG Jumpgate, is proud to announce today that Jumpgate has reached its 5th anniversary of operation in the U.S. In celebration of this occasion, NetDevil is releasing a set of brand new features over the next few updates.

“We are grateful to our dedicated players who, for five years and more, have stuck with us through it all. In appreciation for their loyalty we’re pleased to announce a new, updated, military system,” said Scott Brown, President of NetDevil.

Some of the new military features include:

  • A new military flight registry that represents enlistment in a faction's space forces.
  • Military-specific additions to the missions system that dynamically adjust according to factions being in conflict.
  • New rules of engagement for military pilots.
  • An insurance system for civilian pilots (military pilots are covered by their faction as a benefit).
  • Additional medals specific to military service.
  • Revamped bombers for installation assault roles.
  • A privateering system allowing service in the forces of other factions, including Hyperial (coming soon).
  • A new strongpoint installation as the centerpiece for territory control battles (coming soon).

“With this new update, and others in the planning stages,” continued Brown, “we look forward to many more years of continued success with our ever-devoted player base.”

I miss good old jumpgate, played it on the european servers. Unfortunatly at the time of writing there are 12 people online, not much point in playing... :/

Hi Hactor...You must have been looking in on the game during the European downtime, It's busiest between about 8.pm - 03.00 am GMT when the Yanks and European players overlap. The new Military expansion has brought back a load of old players, and 3 weeks in we are seeing sustained larger numbers.

At the moment its almost like a Beta, we are being encouraged to comment on and suggest changes to the new expansion. Though other than some tweaking here and there its looking pretty good so far, it's been well thought out and implemented.

All in all it's a good time to give it another look if your an old player. If you havent tried it before, its basically multiplayer "Elite", or the X-series for those too young to remember "Elite". The graphics are a bit dated now but you won't notice , as the flight model and  combat are still the best around.

PS. There is a free 10, or maybe it's 7, day trial available, it will take around 5-10 hours to work yourself up to having enough money to get a decent combat/trading/mining ship and from then on the universe is you oyster.

Currently the peak numbers are between 50 and 80, admittedly not a lot compared to the 400+ players EU had during its prime, but JG still is a lot of fun to play. What counts for me is that the individual can make an impact on the game universe, unlike other MMO(RP)Gs where a single player's contribution means next to nothing.

Jumpagte is by far the best space sim MMO out there, and has the most intense PvP system.
If only they updated the graphics engine.

Reading between the lines of the latest GM_Istvan interview in the Darkspace Dispatch, I believe chances are something like this might happen in the foreseeable future (i.e. within a year or so).

However, this may just be wishful thinking and I may be dead wrong... unsubstantiated optimism being one of my more annoying character traits

btw, is there a way to get ones european char over to the us server?

All accounts that were active on EU I think since EP2 was released (not sure though, but you can probably find the info on the old MG forums http://mgforum.blair.at ) were copied over to the US server. In case of a name clash, the EU account got a number appended. You will need to remember your JOSSH password (not the password from the MightyGames site) though in order to access and reactivate your account, because MightyGames did not pass anything except the pilot database to NetDevil.

    I used to play Jumpgate.

I lost a lot of interest of this game as soon as it started to no longer to become player drivin.

I think it is encouraging that they are still trying to something to this game.  I have come back to this game after 3 years and I find myself ignoring my EVE and Vanguard icon's on my desktop and double clicking Jumpgate.  Plain and simple its the only space game I have found that actually needs a player to do something besides clicking the mouse button.  Fair enough the population has dropped. Even with 80 players in this universe it is better than 1000 madly clicking at skeletons, rats or whatever.  The sub is cheap enough to enjoy it as a solo game regardless.  Either way I will play it again because its fun.  Deep down I think this game is an epic waiting to be picked up. Just needs a bit of updating / advertising and it would be huge.
