Whats ruins a MMO experience the most?

Have you ever started playing a game and got really into it, then see or notice something that just completely ruins the experience of the game?

This is a list of common things that do just that, if you can relate please reply.

======

Immaturity: Annoying or just rude players (or GMs), GMs that punish players for unacceptable reasons.

Pay to Play price: A monthly fee that is alot more exspensive then most MMOs.

Lack of technical support: Either have no technical support team at all, or a support team that takes months to respond to even the most common errors in thier games.

Poor community: The community doesnt try to help other players or insults others often.

Purchasing game money/items: The only way to get somewhere in the game is to buy items or money with real currency.

Broken or clunky UI. Awkward and sloppy controls. Community to an extent but I've learned to just turn off global chat.

When I play P2P MMORPGs, I feel pressure to play as much as possible because I'm paying a fee to play the game. I usually get burnt out pretty quick in this situation.

The thing that hurts my experience the most, however, is grinding. I know some people enjoy grinding, but I absolutely despise. I think it's due to the fact that I don't like level based system, or it could just be that I don't like killing the same thing over and over again.

The modern MMORPG is simply not worthy, of the acronym RPG. The straight grind and lack of atmosphere leave me with no choice. From this day forth, World of Warcraft, Everquest 2, and all the games like them shall be referred to as PIGCRAP. People In Guilds Constantly Raiding And Power-leveling

Lack of a tutorial. or even just a starter quest. a tutorial is the most important aspect of any mmorpg, because it gives the first impression. its may be wrong of me, but when an MMO does not have a tutorial or a clear starter quest, then I usually quit right away.

The only thing I dont like are the immature players.

These are the ones who spend most of the time picking the game apart and whining on the games forums.
They try to get the developers to change the game to fit their personal playstyle and think they are the voice for that games entire community.

The game needs to be intuitive. From the interface to the layout of the environment. I've played too many MMORPG's where I log in, create my character, and am dumped somewhere with no clue where to go or what to do next. New players need to be eased into the world, not thrown into the deep end.

On this poll there was no choice, Poor community all the way

    Waiting on Guild Wars 2

  • OhaanOhaan Member UncommonPosts: 568

    In short, lack of community.

More specifically, when a developer fails to take advantage what the genre has to offer. When it turns out to be a glorified single player RPG with a massive integrated chat feature instead of a virtual world.

Well there are plenty of things that can ruin it...

Personally the thing I HATE the most would have to be... the non stop braggers.... Its okay to be 133t every once in a while, but dont run around every zone screaming your 133t, stealing kills, and /ignoring everyone who gets mad at you

I hope for you that you do not have cable or a phone, because you pay the fee every month, are you on the phone all the time or watching TV? Everyone knows that the free game are so much better and without any feeling of grinding and they last longer!!!!!

I would say community to be my first.

Get a life you freaking Gamer.....no no, you don't understand, I'm a Gamer, I have many lives!!

The player/community response is where I sit. For me theres nothing worse that running around a really good MMO game only to run into some guy named ikillu spamming air guitar emotes. These are the guys that kill steal ninja loot and gank whenever they can. When the 'Massive Multiplayer' is mostly made of 'Massive Moronic' players, even the best made game will tank.

griefers... but also bad game design: being PKed by a higher level who has nothing better to do than PK low levels and laugh... because it makes you realize that most mmo's (World of Warcraft style) are an "hour race", where the person with more hours in the game auto-wins, rather than the most skillful/tactical (which is what the word "game" is supposed to describe), add on to that the fact that there's nothing you can do about the PKer, because he'll always be a higher level than you (i.e. unlike most games, in mmos you can't really think of a new strategy, or study the enemy's attack patterns and find a counter-attack.. it's just higher level wins), as these hour races are linear (no real way to be smart and level up faster, because that would be exploiting)

corrupt administration/GMs: Game GMs who blatantly cater to their fanbois/suck-ups, by giving even more advantages to already-high-level players (they're the ones that they know and the ones who suck up to them) by giving them items, EXP, etc.  In a game called Neocron, some players get special stuff in their apartments, such as more cabinets, GM-spawned decorations, the ability to make an apartment function like a player-run shop, etc, for being friends with/sucking up to a GM.  Also there were instances where GMs just handed over free spawned items to their friends in that game.  In a game called Endless Ages, Game GMs would use console codes to spawn ridiculously strong boss mobs in a town, that you should never see in a TOWN, just so the capped/high-level fanbois can kill and loot them ....and they'd call that an "Event".  This made me sick because a.) things like this completely take away any immersion and b.) if anything, GMs should be helping new players with tips and advice (like the greeters do in AO at least), but certainly not using cheatcodes to summon bossmobs for high level players to loot.  that's wrong..

basically... bad people ruin lots of mmos

    1. When your playing a game and it seems like theres everything u want but then u start to notice a few bad things that really stand out and u can never ignore them...

    2. When ppl try and rush to cap as fast as they can without really enjoying the game.

    3. lack of customization

    4. Pkers

    5. When armor or weapon models are used over again but just with different names and stats

    6. Painted on textures ( just the ones that are painted right onto the model. Example: WoW )

    7. Quests that have no real fun factor but are needed for the xp

hmm, just some of the things that bother me the most

Lots of things can ruin an MMORPG.... for example

Poor Server performance, crashes, etc  - Shadowbane

Horrific level grinds that more casual (less than 8 hrs a day) players can never complete - Lineage 2

Ridiiculous death penalties that take away from active PvP.. - Lineage 1/2, AC, UO

but the worst off all, poor player communitiies - RFO was the worst I've experienced.. but L2, WOW are two good examples of some real jerks playing the game and me wondering, how do these people get along in the real world?

The most damaging thing to MMOs today, is the DEV teams themselves and the incredibly BAD and incomplete designs they keep re-using.

Community can change.Although it rarely improves ,its possible to do so.

Bugs can be fixed.Although they rarely are in a timely manner.

BUT the design itself. Is the foundation that has the most impact on the product. And so far, the DEV teams are doing a horrible job with design.

While I don't like immaturity, or grinding, I'd have to say what awaits me (or lack there of) at endgame.

What I find funny is that the lack of tech support is very low. I guess that's because most of use have gotten used to it :)

i think the community is what ruins it for me, it's only as fun as the people you play with.  however I must note that I quit RF online before i really got to know the community because of the crap UI, that and i'm spoiled by WoW's .lua customization especially since I make my own addons.

Waiting for: the next MMO that lets me make this macro

Im with Ides here.  Broken or clunky UI and akward movement controls. Also having to stop at loading zones or waste huge amounts of time on travel.

People good or bad aren't a problem for me, they just add to the drama of the game.  I like the drama.

I really do not like any of the ones you listed, and I will explain why for each one in separate paragraphs.

P2P, because I playing Runescape and it was really fun for the first few levels, then I see a bunch of guys with full dragon and full rune (g) trim and I hear them asking each other, "Are you a member?", "I am one what about you?". I asked them what a member was and they tell me that you get better stuff and more benefits and better customer support. So I asked them if it costed anything and how much, and they told me it is $5.00 a month. I do it now, but I was damn pissed off.

I also hate when there is immaturity, because first of all you should actually AGREE to the Terms of Agreement, or at least read the age requirement, and if you meet the age requirement you better stop being my problem and start being my solution. I see people calling each other noobs. THATS JUST PLAIN BALL BUSTING FOR ME. I cannot take the immaturity as well as P2P.

Poor community is bad because if you need help getting directions and they tell you to ask the guards, thats a bad community. When I see people fighting over being nooby or not, that annoys me. A game especially with a partly bad community is Runescape, even though they report every possible curse word and form of every curse word you can think of. I still like Runescape though it has good role playing and is fun.

Bad technical support-I was playing Dark and Light one time on my cousin's computer, and I send them an e-mail, a technical support mail from the account, and a letter to the actual company, and I did not get jack from them. They gave me a e-mail back, only saying that there is nothing they can do about it. That is part of what gives Dark and Light a 3.4 rating.

And lastly, real money to buy virtual items. I am definitely not buying a virtual graphic design for about $15.00. I would rather shove a screwdriver up my you-know-what. I could kind of understand if you get great BENEFITS AND PRIVILEGES but not just for an item(s). I really hate that because if I am already paying to even play the damn game, you don't give me only like 10 items to pick from in the entire item database of the MMORPG, but if I buy the special pack for retards-who-have-nothing-else-to-do, I get a freaking item that sucks! You tell me.

Like I said in one of my paragraphs, I think these games should stop being my problem and start being my damn solution.

Games played: World of Warcraft, Lineage 2, Runescape, Sherwood Dungeon,
Beta tested: World of Warcraft, Ultima Online Runescape username:Crusader2729
