"In Vanguard you can't be both a crafter and adventure at the same time because skills required for fighting are not available in crafter mode. You have to choose your mode before leaving town, you can't just simply switch back and forth, and therefore you are forced to group with others to aquire crafting materials, even though you may be powerful enough as an individual fighter to take down those mobs when you are adventuring in fighter mode."
This is outdated. You can switch spheres at any time and your outfit as well (switching from, say, adventuring gear to harvesting gear). Where did you see this? Is it in our FAQs? If so, I need to fix ASAP.
thanks,

Well thank you for posting here Brad, this is actually information I received a while back when discussing the game mechanics with the lead crafting person on the Vanguard forums.
The point really isn't about wether you can switch between spheres in or out of towns though, but the ability to be self sufficient as a soloing crafter/adventurer. If I have to be in crafter mode to receive material drops from mobs, then obviously I can't also be in adventurer mode to fight/kill said mob which means that crafting is a dependent occupation, off limits to soloers by design.

I think that this is how it's gonna work :
switch to harvest gear to be able to begin harvesting switch to crafting gear to be able to begin crafting
I might be wrong, but this is what i get from Brad.
Originally posted by penlaen Not a bad read, though most of it the race descriptions don't seem that different from Everquest. (And the undead invasion reminded me of Warcraft).
Horizons whole story also revolved around an undead invasion. For the love of Pete, WoW didn't invent half the ideas people think it did.
Actually i can't really think of anything that WoW "invented".
Not many MMOs these days really "invent" anything new - they take what other MMOs did and fit it to their story, and (if we are lucky) make it better
As for all those people who say "If this game is this i won't play it" or "If this game does not have that, i won't play it!" - wait and see for yourself!
it is always hard to judge a game unless you have played it. someone said the videos did not look too great? well i have played games where the videos looked amazing and the game was pants. you can not judge a game by the box - you need to play it.
The best you can do is the following: Buy Vanguard when it's out. Play the first month for free (which will probably be the case). If you like it, keep playing. If you don't like it then stop playing and find another game.
But to be declaring your distaste with the game before you even have played it, is just ludicrous. I mean how can you judge something when you have no clear idea of what it is?
I read up on Vanguard a lot. But i am not in the Beta, so i don't know what the game is actually about. I can give some ideas as to what i think, but i will not judge a game until i have played it.

3) I personally prefer to play MMOs with just 2-3 of my RL friends and I tend to enjoy crafting, which I did a lot of in EQII. In Vanguard, the different "spheres" are distinct but incredibly easy to switch between, at any time. The comments here about having to choose your crafting mode before you leave a city were accurate about a year and a half ago . Now though, you simply open your Equipment window, select the tab on the left (adventuring, crafting, harvesting, diplomacy), then close the window - your character instantly changes into the appropriate gear for that sphere.
How does one fight and solo mobs as a crafter, in order to ensure that the crafting materials drop?
You know you can't solo the whole game of Vanguard so why do you even waste your time asking? It's not a solo game, there are other games out there where you can have your cake and eat it too. And there will be some raiding, you know this so just go find a game that's being made for you and stop condemning every game that doesn't cater to your specific playstyle.
On the topic of races, I think the choices are varied and a nice blend of the classic races with some innovation to boot. I had the idea in my head that I was going to make a Thestra Barbarian Warrior, but now I am not sure and likely won't be until I actually log in for the first time. That's pretty sweet.

You have been waiting for this game over 2 years and you don't know if it's a raiding game or not? Either you are very unintelligent or you're a trolls alt. Take your pick.

But raiding ruins everything for a player like me, and for quite many players I am pretty sure.
Oh well, I will just have to wait for better endgame designs, such as HJ, Stargate and BioWare will most certainly bring forth.
Ugh do you have to spam the same message in every freaking thread about the game???
I can't wait for those other games either but just because this game isn't catering to your "solo the devil himself" play style doesn't mean it won't freaking rock. It's for another type of player man someone who likes to group.

I look forward to a MMOG we both can enjoy again that doesn't enforce a linear playstyle such as raiding by treating soloers and smaller group oriented players as second class citizens by restricting them from raid drops with artificial no trade, bind on pickup tags.
Ok, so what game do you like that has been released?
Originally posted by Jorev Ok let's talk about crafting. Crafting in Vanguard requires dependency on others because you can't be self sufficient. Not fun and not realistic. Crafters in the real world often toil in solitude to perfect their art.
Maybe in the Cave-Man days but after say the year 1 A.D. you usually have to buy some sort of supplies, whether it be animal or mineral to work your craft. Also, inter-dependancy builds community, something of which, in the MMORPG world, I am mostly very proud. 99% of the people you meet in these games are stellar individuals and lives can be enriched by these social interactions. It's pretty awesome actually.
