I just dont see why opening up a classic server would not be benefical.

For example how many people want a old school UO server, or a pre NGE/CU server SWG. MANY, when the mmorpg company changes the game for the worst and many subs leave, then why not open a classic server, now youll have two different subscriptions comming in every month, players that love old school and players that love the new rules/concept. You would not be losing money but acctually gaining.

Proof, EQ opened up classic servers to start from scratch, though this is no where near the true blue experence that players once had and i know with time these classic servers will become regular servers but even SOE at EQ admit this is the most incomming SUBs they had in a LONG time with EQ. They had gotten a huge boost in subscriptions. So i dont see why opening a non classic server on any game that has alot of older players protesting for one would be so bad.

    lol true, but some times admiting your mistakes is the only way you can save yourself.

    A simple and elegant truth, yet for most people it is something that is hard to achieve and many do not even strive for it.

    While I agree with all of you on this thread, there must be something more to the situation. I refuse to believe that all these developers are just too immature to admit that they've taken a good game and made it worse.

    Who remembers the infamous LU #13 for EQ 2? There was a huge outcry to change the combat system back because it was too hard. The developers flat out stated that the old system was not condusive to their original vision of the game and that no changes would be made. Now, most people will agree (with a little tweaking) that the game is still enjoyable and soloable (two of the major complaints from LU #13) and that it is more satisfying and challenging (the devs primary intention).

    In the end though, I do think that it's silly not to. With EQ 2, it just made sense and it all worked out because the devs listened to a lot of complaints (the difficulty for a lot of mbs, the unbalanced XP reward for groups/heroics and the decreased efficiency of certain classes [Rangers]) but other companies do see great success. EQ 1, which has been mentioned, and DAoCs non-ToA servers are perfect examples.

    And with the non-ToA, that was a huge move and one of the only valid reasons I could see NOT to make "classic servers". EA/Mythic charged $30 or whatever for these expansions and so a lot of players had the right to demand that we all abide by those new rules. EA/Mythic took a gamble with splitting the playerbase but it appears to have worked.

    So yeah, get off your asses SWG devs, give the masses what they want.

    EQ 1 was the first mmorpg for myself and all of my real life friends.  If they made a true classic server I don't think I would go back.  But I know that three of my friends would.

    ::::03::A Coolguy20 thread I agree with!

    I wish I had more to say however, it doesn't make any sense to me why games like UO and SWG don't open up classic servers.

    I think that in the case of SWG, classic servers would take away a lot of players from the NGE servers, which are already underpopulated. Servers with nobody playing on them are wasting money, and server merges are practically a public broadcast saying "We're in trouble, ready the lifeboats!". And frankly, seeing as SWG devs last about as long in their jobs as Spinal Tap drummers, I really don't think the current lot would know how to run the pre-CUNGE game from a technical or game design point of view.

    Hard for the devs, they have to maintain another complete code base and maintain it.

    While I would sign up in a minute to play a classic SWG, I don't think Sony has the devs left to do it.

    No they don't need to maintain the code, jsut the server.  Microsoft doesn't maintain Windows NT anymore, but you can still use it if you like.
