Better in every way. While Planetside is not perfect I believe it is the most complete FPS out there.
But most people will bash it because they suck at it due to it not being like every other FPS out there and full of weapons that just splash the area.. Another reason people do not like it might be due to the slower pace, especially if you play a game like UT....
But if you want a complete FPS where you can kill efffectively with each and every weapon and one that has vehicles galore then this would be a good game to try.
Only downside if you ask me is a couple of screwups by the dev team with some additions to the game that were not needed and the fact that the game is dying out.. But even dying out there is no other FPS game out there that con provide the numbers on one server that PS has. Most top at at 32v32 or maybe even 64v64 but in PS each continent server holds 133v133v133 (I believe that is the number now, the brought that down from 200 back in the day).

The vehicles are pretty generic - you always get the impression that PS was meant to be released then followed by an expansion pack 3 months later as everyone was about to quit from boredom. Ive played PS for years on all three sides but it has some enormous flaws pertaining to the community and lack of content or updates.

So its basically every other FPS game multiplied by 10 in every regard. PS still owns any other fps out there.

I find it's much more balanced. You will still get owned by vehicles if you're not smart, but anti-vehicle weapons actually do damage, and there are far more aircraft counters.
MMO games played or tested: EQ, DAoC, Archlord, Auto Assault, CoH, CoV, EQ2, EVE, Guild Wars, Hellgate: London, Linneage II, LOTRO, MxO, Planetside, SWG, Sword of the New World, Tabula Rasa, Vanguard, WWIIOL, WOW, Age of Conan
Imagine Battlefield 2, but with 60 commanders running around giving artillery strikes every 30 seconds on your spawn point. The orbital strike is the artillery strike of Planetside, but there isn't just one commander there are many, with their finger on the easy-button.
BTW, someone here on MMORPG deleted one of my threads which said the exact same thing, so censorship will not give you the completely picture of this fundamentally broken game.

That information is taken out of context, while being true SOMETIMES, most of the times its not nearly that close to the truth. Sometimes, during a big and long sieges there MIGHT be a period of time where several of those strikes be called up on the spawn points (AMSes), but they have a long recycle timer so it can be 5 strikes in 5 minutes but then zero strikes in an hour. If you average it out, id say 1 strike comes out every 10-20 minutes. If that OS is well placed, it can disrupt the siege to allow defenders regroup and resupply the base. Its not a huge burden for the attackers though becuase AMSes can be brought in large numbers (recycle timer is like 3 minutes or so)
To answer OP. If you played Counterstrike (best example comparing to other FPSs I think) imagine a server with 6-10 different maps (much larger maps, about 10 times larger). Now imagine each map has some kind of tangible benefit, like 10% armor, or shield recharge benefit, etc. That benefit is lucrative to capture but will not affect gameplay very much. So, now u get large maps, and those maps are connected to each other with benefits for capturing them. Then you have many weapons, vehicles and planes, none of them are unbalanced, each has advantages and disadvantages in a certain situation.
Each map can support around over 300 players. Lag may be an issue on older computers during those huge battles.
In summary, Planetside is like Counterstrike but on a larger and more meaningful scale. Where in CS you fight for a round then the fighting restarts without any benefits from the previous round (except for money if u win). In PS, round never ends and your personal skill determins how good u r and how often you die. Ive seen people being outnumbered 3 to 1 and still holding their ground.
I am the type of player where I like to do everything and anything from time to time.
I'm a long-time PS player who has recently come to the Battlefield series in the shape of BFV back at release, BF2 jus recently and some time in the BF2142 demo. i'll try to analyse the combat in reverse...
Aiming. much hoo-ha has been made of Cone-of-fire aiming in Planetside. people don't like it. they say bullets should go where they're aimed... which is crap. BF has the same aiming system more or less - try killing anyone more than ten feet away while running full tilt in either game and tell me they're so different. likewise, crouch (there is no Prone in PS - short range duels are not a race for who can reacquire their target the fastest after both instantly drop to the ground) and burst fire and you can hit at pretty long ranges with even the most inaccurate weapons.
There are no headshots. on the one hand it means people can't be instantly taken down by one lucky hit and on the other... people can't be instantly taken down by one lucky hit. swings and roundabouts. It does mean that if you kill someone, it has more to do with your tactics, weaponry and ability to aim than it does with luck. average time-to-kill is roughly... 1 1/2 times that of Battlefield, maybe 2x - there aren't actually that many 'instagib' weapons in the game, and those that do are mostly severely restricted in other ways.
There's no squabbling over vehicles. you buy certifications to use a specific vehicle with the same points you buy infantry weapons, and you can pull them from a terminal in any friendly base. you can gun for someone else's vehicle without any certs at all. also, and this is a point worth noting, the driver of a vehicle has the power to kick out gunners and passengers if they want to, and to lock the seat completely or only allow access to their platoonmembers.
There are no unlockable weapons which significantly unbalance gameplay. the default weapons you spawn with the first time you login will still be a valid weapon choice when you're BR25 CR5 and have access to every weapon in the game, and while generally the more certs you spend the more effective the item, no weapons completely supercede their prerequisites.
OS seem to be Nerf09's current pet hate - Search his name and most of his posts here are trolls on the subject. In reality... they're roughly the same impact as BF artillery strikes - more powerful, but less spammable. as jimmy said, they aren't THAT frequent unless you're in a massive fight, and the comparatively small area they cover and the difficulty of aiming accurately (you aim in roughly the same way as in BF, but the map doesn't include any troop indicators, friend or foe) mean they aren't anything near game-breaking. if you're smart you'll learn when and where they're likely to hit and avoid them - i also recommend you invest in the Surge implant early on, for when you're caught out
At the moment there's a free trial - you have nothing to lose by trying it out.
It's not funny, it's not clever, and it WILL break if you play with it.
It's like BF2142 with worse/older graphics, bigger servers and maps and immensely deeper game play.
Very fulfilling game if you like combined arms games. Makes those domestic free to play shooters look very simple fare. Planetsides depth of gameplay comes from a combination of the large variety of units and weapons, the maps and the objectives.
The experience tree is much better implemented than BF's unlock system as previously mentioned. You can have any unlock you like, any time you like, but as you get higher level you can have more than one at a time.
You can respec your choice everyday, so it's never a big issue.
On the downside with 500 player 3 way battles it noticeably lags at times. If you thought shot accuracy/hit recognition in BF was bad wait until you see the sacrifices Planetside has had to make to fit that many players on a map.
Originally posted by Midaveg Agree on what the poster above me said. Planetside lags alot indeed and the aiming is horrible. At least i get to bullet spray in BF 2142.IMHO, i prefer BF 2142 over Planetside.
I prefer neither, they are both pointless shootem-up games. Artillery and Orbital Strike makes both games even more pointless and random quake 2fort4 pointless games.
PS is the most complete combined arms game out there. Vehicles in this game function in a more true fashion in PS. There is no vehicle in this game that can't be killed by a few well equiped soldiers or a better vehicle crew. Vehicles are a more important role in this game than just the flavor weapons they are in most FPS. Without tanks and ground vehicles to hold the enemies tanks back on open battlefields infantry scream bloody murder as squads of magriders(infamous hover tanks) roll over and shoot them to pieces. Air vehicles serve as scouts to locate enemy locations as well as defend ground units(both infantry and vehicles) from air attacks and bombers.
If you want a very tactical aspect to your FPS then PS is for you. If you want to be the maduberkiller321 then maybe you need something else.

No kidding, I played for about 2 months after the AV buff and really did not see any change in the amount of vehicles being fielded. AT ALL.

Gotta love GeForce7950GX2, no lag at max possible settings/resolution! Even with 7600GT i had before, on minimum to average settings i had little lag in big battles... just an occasional spike in huge battles and longer respawn time (around 5 seconds)
I am the type of player where I like to do everything and anything from time to time.
Its a good game. I've been playing the past two years and have met alot of good people, still play with them today. The vehicles in planetside side are quite fun, one of my favoriate parts of the game. You can have huge vehicle battles like no other game to what I know of. Often my outfit rolls out a column of 5 Tanks and on good days even 10. You can't do that in BF2. The community while can be annoying at times is probably the best FPS one I've seen yet and you actaully can get to know your enemy. Which I find quite interesting .
Both Planetside and Battlefield are pointless. There is no strategic or tactical depth to the games, they are just mindless fragging clones from the first Quake 1 FFA server. And I am not exadurating about the effect of 100 commanders with artillery strikes.
If you think being called, "Commander" sounds cool, there are 100 others standing right next to you, you are nothing special, you just have an easy button.
If you have nothing worth saying, will you please just *spoon* off?
You don't like map-targetted strikes of any kind, because you haven't yet figured out that, when big deadly things fall from the sky, it might be smartest to MOVE. WE GET IT. that does not constitute 'something worth saying', certainly not when it is the ONLY thing you have said, in various different ways, in ALL of your posts in this forum.
It's not funny, it's not clever, and it WILL break if you play with it.
The sheer volume of orbital strikes removes any resemblances to tactical warfare that could have existed in Planetside. Planetside is all about random fragging, and grinding to your easy button OS. Yes, grinding, just like in WOW.

Easy. The other ones are fun.
