Ok, didn't really mean to sound stupid. I did hear abou this game a while back but this was waaay back before i actually played any real pc games. i remember seeing it advertised on all best buy computers or w/e but never really knew what it was.

i know this was an online rpg but that's about it

Now i play WoW so i guess if there are any similiarities that would help. this game sounds like a "grand father" game of online rpgs like eq or ao

Yeah Im pretty sure there arent any new users on this game - Its just kept alive by the die-hards. Wouldnt recommend it to be honest especially if youre coming from Wows standard of graphics & quests.

Grimboj, there are definitely new players all the time. Some come, some go.

What is better about World of Warcraft quests? I happen to think that AC quests are more fun overall.

  • I can't really say whether or not thats true seeing as I never tried AC yet nor plan too, but World of Warcraft quests are pretty great, ask the 6 million users it got in 2 years (I am one of them). A good game also would be Guild Wars.

Having played both WoW and AC...

WoW doesn't have quests. WoW has errands. Collect 10 of this. Kill 15 of that. Very few quests are even mildly interesting, let alone exciting.

AC had exciting quests, because you didn't know everything beforehand. You didn't have a "quest" tab that kept track of all the information for you. You would simply talk to an NPC and he'd give you some lore and a direction to start running... but very little else. It truly felt like you were on an adventure, rather than some preprogrammed set of conditionals that you had to satisfy. Also, you didn't have some absurd  limit to the amount of quests you could do at a time. Often, one quest at a time was enough because they were so in-depth and involved, not the quick, done-in-10-minute affair that WoW offers.

AC had tons of quests, just like WoW, but each one was special. WoW are all cookie-cutter, mass produced for mass consumption.

I pity anyone whos only MMORPG experience is WoW, they have no idea what they're missing.

  • Well, I do too becuase I played Everquest, Everquest II, Guild Wars, Lineage, Lineage II, Matrix Online, Anarchy Online, and you get the point though. And the quests you are talking about are usually WoW's starter quests for low level characters. Once you get to a certain level the quests are tougher and more exciting as well. What is your favorite quest from AC?

I think my favorite quest is Blackmire3. It is also one of the most difficult quests, and most people have never completed it because of the jumping puzzle. You have to jump on platforms that are constantly disappearing and reappearing. If you miss a jump, you fall into a pit. Then it takes 30 minutes to get back to where you were. I remember my first time on that quest. We started with 11 players, but only 4 of us got past the jumps.

I also like the Gaerlan quest. Those rolling balls of death are fun to get around. If you touch them, you die instantly. It's like Indiana Jones.

I have played both WoW and Asheron's Call and imo AC had funner and more exciting quests, not like wow where you have to get some of this item or kill how many of these mobs ect. in AC there was quests that felt like adventures like what Swiff had said. Some of the quests that i liked was Bobo, Blackmire, Harbringer and the Invoker. The game has gone down in population but more players are coming back more and more now.

  • yeah from what it sounds like, Warcraft quests are classic such as killing a major boss or rescuing someone, and from what the blackmire quest is described as, it confirms that AC quests are better then WoW quests. Now someone who played WoW pick out your favorite quest. For me, any raid quest is great becuase I get to use 25-40 people I know and its great.

I think the reason AC was so fun for many of us was because it was a first gen 3d mmorpg.  For most of the people who played AC it was their first experience with an mmo, and they weren't preconditioned to look for specific things within the game so as to base their opinion.  We all simply played and enjoyed.  There were no damage calculators and build guides (for a little while...), and you didn't have to have that certain quest armor/weapon that everyone else had.  For the most part people had their own unique equipment, because the differences were not calculated out to a science.  Whatever you found that looked cool, you wore... It was as simple as that.

Quests gave a feeling of accomplishment because they were often new every month.  Sure, the main storyline quest was usually completed within hours, but there were always many other smaller additions that could be done by everyone.  There was also no room to be bothered by the fact that the storyline advancing quest had been completed before you even heard about it.  The game just had a LOT of lore, and the people who did discover those quests were the rightful ones complete them.  There was often no clearcut path on where and what would begin the quest.  The AC website didn't just say "Asheron will appear in Yaraq 5 minutes after the update at coordinates x,y and he will tell you to do such and such".  Everyone had to actually "think" about what could possibly happen and where it might be so that they could be there first.

I remember I was one of the first on Solclaim to successfully complete the quest for the Arcane Pedestal... Although I can't claim much credit for that other than sheer luck.  The dungeon was bugged as hell and nobody could really stay connected long enough to gather all the gears and parts necessary.  I just got really lucky...  I ended up giving it to the alliance to put outfront of our mansion. (which proves another point that made AC fun.  A lot of things weren't "neccessary" to have, but they were fun to get anyway...)

im gonna have to disagree with a lot of this. Sure..first gen mmorpg...thats true. Precondition true. But damage calcs and build guides consisted from beta. but the part I dont agree with is the end part....you are chincing out one of the GREATEST parts of ac that no mmorpg has replicated..... and that is..

Randomly Generated Loot....*music of discovering something amazing*

Randomly generated loot was...any item could have a random set of stats/buffs within a preconcieved limit...but every piece was different

One longsword may have 8-24 damage with +4% to melee damage and +2% to melee defense with major strength, and blood drinker 4

While another longsword may have 5-38 damage with no melee mod and +4% to melee defense with minor cooking prowess..

EVERY ITEM other than quest drops was completely random...no mod words like "of the eagle" that predetermined item stats with its limits.

This not only allowed characters to be original..it forced it. And it made a constant strive to obtain new and unique loot that wasnt only awarded to the most hardcore of characters because all of these drops were random off of any mobs.

Ac also had great character customization...you get xp from killing mobs...that xp goes into a pool...you can spend it HOWEVER you want...str...endurance...hp...sword skill...magical skills

Ac ALSO had a seemless world (except for dungeons) it truly was a big game...no zones to make it seem bigger (like wow uses...wow is really small but due to zones and the horrifically slow movement speed it seems large) The whole world was just one big area you could freely travel in...and had to...it made going out to that crazy dungeon surrounded by horrific monsters...to fight your way to the bottom and achieve the item all that much better...and fun. AC is teh greatest...it just took a few wrong terms (mainly supporting power leveling) (and destroying its spell economy) and lost its playerbase.....
