Originally posted by JAttractive Ugh no way I want to hear other people's real life voices in-game nor do I want to talk in to a microphone. First of all I would feel idiotic second of all I often play late hours when the rest of my house is asleep... How well will that go off? There is also just no way I could immerse myself in to a typical MMORPG setting with trolls, knights and wizards and then hear a 12 year old whiney voice come out of a 14 foot tall ogre. My whole suspension of disbelief would be destroyed. Anyway if it's on a console there better be a keyboard and mouse or it better be so amazing I just can't resist it. All things being equal I'd much prefer it on my computer. Of course I dream of the day when PCs are a blend of console and what we see now.... I really need a keyboard and mouse and please, no voice chat!
Well, I guess you did not read the post about using a Voice to text system, so you talk, but it comes up as text to the receiver. Also, I would still like to be able to select a few individuals that I hear. If my little brother is playing another character in the party, I would not mind hearing his voice come out. I guess you must never have played any of the XBox Live games with Voice Chat, because it works great and you can turn off (ignore) dumb ass individuals. It also makes fighting and talking at the same time possible. Really helps when you are in a battle and you are able to just yell to your groupmates, "Over there, behind the house!". And not have to take your hands off the controls.
This would make the keyboard unnecessary.
As for mouse. That is another of the PvP vs. PvE or PC vs. Mac style debates. There are those who like the controller for FPS and those who don't. Just opinion (hear that Kriminal99, OPINION)...
As for feeling dumb talking to the mic, it starts out that way, but do you feel dumb talking on the telephone? I got use to it and it no longer bothers me at all. As for being up late at night and not wanting to wake others, that there IS a problem I have faced with XBox Live. But I found it very possible to whisper and be heard on the other end fairly easily.
Again, this is something that would appeal to some and not others. I see your side and have dealt with those issues. I was able to overcome them. In my opinion, the benefits outweigh the downside. I enjoy laying back on the couch playing on my 56" HDTV so much more than sitting at a 19" monitor hunched over a mouse and keyboard.
And I would keep it simple, the pure voice of the players. So what, the troll is a kid in RL, np with me, this is part of playing with someone else. You can always shut someone or if they put robotic voices options like they suggest, turn it on, and the person speaking could turn his voice as robotic as well if the option is there. But myself, I would keep all the real voices from the players. If I hear an insult from a kid voice, I dont take it seriously at all, it is a kid, and I will not answer the same as if I hear an adult insult me. Overall, this would just add and be great. And nobody would waste their time saying: Go learn english when they hear my accent, I am pretty tired of folks complaining about my sentence structure, with my accent, I dont think someone would be harsh with me, they might say it the right way, but that would be about it.
Real life voice is a GREAT roleplaying tool, the best tool we can hope for. The troll have a kid voice? Well, maybe he have some kind of disease, I really dont want to know...(roleplaying)...if he act with lack of maturity, I know it is a kid, I will react with more calm and kindness then if an adult do it.
But...the fact we would be speaking loud is an issue...so the system need to work with very high tech items, so we can almost murmur and it need to ignore the music in the room(and other far away sounds, but the micro you speak in can come with a headset and you can put the music in it and it remove all issue with micro, and you can put music off automatically when someone speak or dampened or whatever)...yet, those obstacles can be overcome I am pretty sure. It should have an alternate non-speaking option, but I would favorise the speaking myself, as in the action, you dont need to read and just focus on the action while you hear the cleric say: Low mana!!! You can set priorities on who you hear in which order, so the rogue endless jokes is when nobody is speaking, the cleric or the chanter say 1 thing and they override the rogue spamming! On the screen you only see the battle itself, that would be a good start.
Male voices on female toons and female voices on male toons would be funny althought!
I think it will soften peoples attitude overall, I find it pretty hard to be harsh with someone when I am talking instead of writing and I absolutely bear no harsh talking, while writing, I often ignore, it will be a softing demeanor attitude as well.
In a PvP setting, I think it would limit PK, I dont think someone will PK someone that scream STOP IT DAMN IT, LEAVE ME ALONE(or a pityfull moan)...the PKer would most likely move away, I mean, it is pretty clear and I dont know many folks that would remain on a killing mood in a game when the victim react that way, it will resolves many issues right away.

We went from consoles to voice chat or communication, which is fine with me.
I agree that voice chat would bring in more emotion into a game, but I also understand that it could hinder believability. I guess something to change the voice might help (change a male's voice into a woman's). I use programs like Teamspeak for other games, such as UT003. It's good for teamplay. It is funny to hear someone for the first time when you already had some kind of impression of the person. UT2004 has a voice thingy built into it. CS has had it for quite awhile now. I think one day will see it move into MMORPG's, just don't know when.

Holy crap that is funny! Just imagined that in my mind. Especially if it is PvP. Hearing a little kid saying "I own you!". lol

I would definitely play a MMORPG that was made just for a console. I prefer games on a console to games on a computer. The only reason that I like console better is because I know that I can rely on it (my luck with computers isn't the best).
One problem though is that communication on a console mmorpg is hard and limited. With a keyboard most likely not everyone would have one and so the people without would take forever to say a sentence. Also a head set sounds all well and good, but how are you going to make only the people around you hear you. If you got into a crowded area it would take forever to get a word out if one person could speak at a time, and if everyone spoke at the same time you wouldn't be able to understand anything. I'm sure if they came up with a good way for using the headphones it would work though.
Yes, I would and prefer to play mmorpgs on a console. Unless of course the game is crap.

In a 3D game using something as similar as DirectSound, voices could closely resemble voices as you hear in the real world. I'm not sure how feasible this is, but I'm sure it can be done. This is different than a channel where all voices are around the same level and you wait for one person to finish what they are saying before you say something. Maybe I should do a mock-up on some free 3-D engine to see what the performance is like.
As more consoles come online, I think there can be emerging new types of gameplay that we haven't seen on PC's yet. Imagination right now is limit to what we already know about PC MMORPGs and people find it hard to imagine what could be different on consoles.
Why would I need console when I have PC that allows me to play all the good MMORPG.
Correct me if I'm wrong. But the idea of playing MMORPG just because it's made for console system is plain sily unless you have nothing else but console to play these games with.

Yay, definately, I was gonna post a reply saying no but I couldnt think of anything to put....but yeh, thats pretty much why its a definate No No for console MMORPGS when I've already got a PC to play them on, im much more a PC person than a console person anyway.
Originally posted by HemKhan im much more a PC person than a console person anyway.
I'm a PC guy when it comes to first person shooters. I liked Halo for XBox but liked it even more when I got in on the PC. I think a MMORPG would be different though for me. I could easily see me playing it on a console instead of the PC.

Equal hardware... Knowing everybody has a headset (if you are on XBox Live that is).
I have been in guilds that use Roger Wilco or other comms programs to talk. It is a huge advantage. Especially in PvP with large battles like in DAoC Realms vs. Realms.
New guildmates would have to be told where to get the software, how to make it work. If they were on modems, then they would have more problems, not enough bandwidth, etc...
My brother and I ALWAYS use it in whatever game we play (using the MS Voice Commander).
XBox Live solves these problems. Really, it is true. If you have never tired it, go over to a friend's house that has it and try it out.
I am definitely playing True Fantasy Online when it finally makes it to the U.S. next year. I'm glad it got pushed back. I'll give me time to play the hell out of World of Warcraft and FFXI.
With the communication you won't need any keyboard. No more long sentence and miss type to people around you instead of to you party or guild members. There are some people who will only play MMORPG games on their PC's. That's fine, but there are a lot of great games that you can only play online on the console. Many of these games need a decent controller or steering wheel and are multiplayer. I can't imagine playing NBA Live 2004 online with 4 friends around my PC. MMORPG games are perfect for PC's because there is only ONE player.
1. you have to have hte console - i only have a PS2 any others would make me not want to play
2. internet - i have the adapter but it would hinder players
3. controls - either severly limited due to using a controller or you must purchase a keyboard.
4. hardware - like for FFXI you must purchase the harddrive with the game. making it extremely expensive to start off with.
5. PC is better overall - runs smoother due to being able to have more RAM, faste PCU, etc. you can get way better graphics with a new video card and moniter than you ever could with a console and television.
I have to say yes. I own an Xbox and the live service works great. One thing people have mentioned is your voice sounding rubbish, well live has solved that too as all the games have voice modification.
I have played Phantasy Star Online and really enjoyed that and the headset worked fantastically. The only reason I stopped playing is the gameplay was a bit limited.
What the consoles will do for MMORPG is add the skill factor. At the moment the thing that really bugs me is the way combat is handled where it is just target and press a key every now and again. Phantasy star did let you string moves together to get a bonus but it was limited as mentioned above. The other thing it did was let you program what actions pressing a button would action.
Well, yeah, PC would definitely be the first option if the game was on both PC and Game Console (i.e. FFXI). I'm playing FFXI on my PC. But for a game like True Fantasy Online that WON'T be on the PC, I'll definitely play it on XBox Live and the controls will be fine without a keyboard. Mostly everything will be access through quick menus like KOTOR. Quick, painless and a lot of fun. The graphics on the XBox are just as good as the PC versions. I'm just hoping that the FEE for the game isn't too high. $10 a month would be o.k., but $15 would be too much. The reason most people are saying "NO" is because they don't play online games on their game consoles to begin with, so they have no idea how good XBox Live really is.

Just my opinion but...
Voice > texts for roleplaying.
