Is UO possible to play for a starting player?

SinayaSinaya Member Posts: 12
Hey guys

I am mostly a crafting / PVE sort of a guy with occasional pvp, but i do enjoy the sense of danger when someone is trying to gank me. I have played WoW (1.5 years) and then EvE for a short while but neither gave me the sense of freedom that i imagined MMOs would have given me. EvE was pretty cool except for feeling a lil confined in my ship and feeling extremely left behind comapred to the veterans with no way of catching up no matter how hard i grinded / tried..  WoW is just full of limits in the end game... After reading about UO, I was rather interested again in this game that i played 6 years ago on free servers but this time to play on the original servers since im a big boy with a credit card now :P.

Now, my question is whether or not a new player who would buy the 10th anniversary thingie be able to get into the game at all? (I realize it starts with some items / a decent level character) Are people cordial towards new players, is the economy impossible for a rabbit-hunting low-skilled newbie ? Oh and for anyone who would think of writing it, i dont care about graphics. Technically only thing i care is whether or not the servers have people in them.

Oh and if anyone played both, could you also give your opinions on EQ2, i am also considering that game.

Thanks for any comments

  • I think one of the biggest things UO has going for it, even after all of these years, is the how free and unrestricting it is.  It's much more a true "virtual world" than what most MMO's offer. Unfortunately, you see more games go the way of EQ, which, in my opinion, sucks. :(

The biggest drawback to playing UO right now is the game's uncertain future. After so many years, EA has finally put some real manpower back into the UO dev team, and the new-new (real) expansion is coming up soon. But, should it bomb, I can't imagine you'll ever see them try again.

Personally, I'm waiting to see how this next expansion does before I hop back on the bandwagon, but we all have our fingers crossed. Our faith in the game is understandablly shaken.

I'm interested in trying UO again too.   I missed the bandwagon the first time around.

EQ2 is refreshing after a WOW stint, looks better, but isn't as instinctive as WOW is.

I'm really interested in UO again, now I have a more time to spend on a MMO, but if it is dying then I won't bother.

Like many others I'm looking for 'that' game to hook me in, maybe UO is it?

The last thing UO is,   is dying,... the community is strong as ever and the player base is expanding with both new and returning players everyday.  The forthcoming "expansion" as Jkun called it is just an optional new look client, that is purely  up to the player to choose to use or not just as the 2d and 3d clients are now  this will do nothing to hamper the game's player base  nor change the gameplay the game has grown  into in  the last 9 years.  The fact that UO and Mythic teamed up to enhance the development team serves only to bring us new and exciting  events and ingame features faster and with more depth.  This game isn't going anywhere anytime soon (if ever) so its a very solid choice  for a sandbox oriented  MMO that offers by far the most diverse and intruiging virtual world to explore and discover. I recommend it to anyone that is looking for a real vitual world  to play in for a change from the cookie cutter instanced dungeon, preset endgame (until they wanna sell ya an expansion) WoW and EQ II, environments.  Its by far the most fun MMO out there and truely a gem amongst a pile of rocks. There is a great, well established crafting system  as well as excellent pve,  and if ya want to pvp in a totally separate facet. So you can if you choose to, pve with no threat of PK's.

Overall I give it two hearty thumbs up!!

(ps don't let the low hour count on Xfire fool ya I just registered for it yesterday, i have been playing for years!)

Registering for the 2 week trial as we speak......we'll soon see and it's good to get a decent response that isn't full of the usual fanboi cliches :)

edit: scrap that free trial my arse!  15 days free play & u still pay 9.99 for it....bollocks to that then...I'll hold on until the new UO client is for sale and see what reviews it gets from the player base.

While I understand where you're coming from, I *really* think a graphical update is absolutely neccesary if UO really wants to pull in as many new players as it can. The new expansion will also include new content, but the specifics haven't been released yet. Check UO's official site as my source.

I also seriously have to wonder just how fair you're being, here. UO might not be dead, but it's certainly not in an especially strong position. I can't imagine the playerbase has had a significant influx for quite awhile now, and that's not a healthy state to be in. There have also been quite a few *massive*, gamechanging patches within the past few years that have definately harmed the playerbase in terms of population, ie: itemization, pvp, housing vendors, etc.

But as for the quality of the game, I've definately got to agree with you there.

I totally agree on both points.  The game's future is questionable simply because it came out so long ago that new MMORPGs have been created capitalizing on the failures of UO while stealing a percentage of the clientale.  While UO was and still is a fun game, it is somewhat archaic.  I've wished for a long time that they would retire UO and create UO 2, but unfortunatly that is not in the near future.

Of course it is possible to start now in UO: I have met so many true young players lately. We are all helping young players to get started. Especially because you like Crafting and PVE. UO's future is a secure as any other mmorpg really. There is never a certainty if it be around for ever and ever. You will always have those people who say UO is going to die/ is dying, they have been saying it for the last 9 year ;) Usually it is those poeple that do not play anymore. But enough of that. Why don't you just get yourself the 15 day free trial and give it a go. Its always best to make up your mind. And if you think the graphica are a bit dated for you, well next year we get a graphic update so that problem would be solved as well ;)

If you do give it a try. Go to West Brittain Bank. There you will find loads of people who are happy to help you with your first steps :)

Yes things are starting to change for the better again It's about time they got someone to do the job or at least take a chance at it. It's not hard for a new player there realy isn't any levels to have to catch up on and gaining skill is rather easy anymore it's just catching up on stuff and if you get in with the right guild they will help you with just about everything.
