Are they trying to pack in too many features?

The dev team is not a giant powerhouse.  Why do they keep trying to pack in all these extra features.

Naval combat? Cool, but umm. why?  It's not a naval combat game, just seems like wasted energy.

Why would they not just focus on some core features, like combat, and get it out....  Seems like they are wasting a lot of time.....

They are trying to make a fun pvp game, naval combat should be in.

Seems they have alot of money to spend and alot of time to work on it, so let them and hope they achieve something.

Look at all the other developers out there, most recent released games are not even complete (lack some features that were promised) who knows maybe DF will have what it promised and more.

You answered your own question there. Naval combat is part of the core feature of DFO; combat!

I think that most of the core features are already done, but that they are testing them extensively and adding things like mobs, skills or editing the current things as the testing sees fit. The official gameplay trailer would suggest this.

They are quite willing to take their time and not RUSH a open-thinking game like this. Better to have a beta released that remains largely bug-free and enjoyable, than from them to rush beta now and probably end up with a rushed,bug-loaded game.

  • Looks like an expanded 3d Ultima Online (The original, not once EA got ahold of it). If they deliver on everything they have said they will deliver on i'll have to change my pants every time I log on.

Its just so expansive its amazing. Hopefuly they take all the time they need to make this great.

To compete in the MMO industry they will need every extra feature they can get.  Hopefully it doens't turn out to be a lot of empty promises.

Instead of asking why the Darkfall devs spent time putting in naval ships and combat, I keep asking why haven't other games done this?

I mean, WTF??? This is basic stuff that has been in MMO's since Ultima Online in 1997. Granted, it wasn't as well developed, but why have MMO's gone BACKWARDS with features?

I'll tell you one of the reasons I've heard from developers why they don't put in too many features. They have said they don't want games to be too "complex" for the average user.

Given our target audience, we knew we would have to create a less complex environment than you might find in a "typical" MMOG.

If the pvp and guild warfare with sand box elements and solid pvp system I.E people not dieing in 1 sec or somthing really wrong then this game is going to be a blessing for those of us who like our mmo's with guild pvp.

Best thing about this game is the devs played shadowbane and are trying to make a game with simular guild warfare elements but alot better. Which is right on in my book.

    Lol at that quote.

I agree with what you are saying, but that quote is for ToonTown online, and the guy is saying it will have to be simple because their target audience is little disney kids.

To bad Shadowbane was the biggest let down ever. A majority of these features are taken from Ultima Online. Guild warfare, shadowbane rofl. It was old UO developers who went and tried to make shadowbane and failed horribly, and so they just tried to put construct to what was so prevalent within the UO shards.

Hopefuly everything comes out the way they have it outlined on their website. Im so looking forward to another skill based game. These games that rely so heavily on items is getting old. The days of looting people dry again can't come soon enough.

is 3PV THAT important to you?

This debate has raged long and hard in my current game, Planetside. in it there IS a third-person mode and it is arguably one of that game's greatest weaknesses - it has lead to the practice of 'pillar humping', or standing facing the wall next to a corner and looking around it in 3pv, able to see anyone coming several seconds beforehand, while remaining entirely undetected.

I think 3pv is a disasterous addition to any game which involves manual aiming and detection, and gives an entirely 'unnatural' advantage to anyone using it. I'm glad Darkfall doesn't seem to be including it.

It's not funny, it's not clever, and it WILL break if you play with it.

This game is first person view?!  I'd never play a first person view only MMORPG.

I"m not feeling the first person view on an MMO game... I rather have the dev gives the player the option to do so. Plus I can't stand first person view, kinda give me a heahache. I played a few FPS for a few hours, adn that's it. Any more than that... my head hurts. KInda dizzy in a way.

I like the idea of DarkFall gameplay. LIke a couple of persons said... First person view kinda disapointing.

People who complain about FPV don't understand the concept of Darkfall.  First, melee combat is in 3PV.  Which is the only time 3PV is absolutely neccessary.  I hate FPV melee combat.  The rest of the game is in FPV for good reason.  There is no stealth type skills that simulate using the environment to your advantage.  In DF you will really have to use the environment to your advantage.  Staying out of peoples LoS, using tall grass, trees, brush, walking slowly, etc to do any kind of rogue stuff in DF.  If they allowed the game to be played in 3PV, they might as well take rogue skills out of the game all together.

This is gonna make the game more challenging and based on player skill rather than time invested.  SB became a game of building your toon, learning the best combination of skills to use, and hotkeying them until your target is dead.  Darkfall will not even be comparable.

Don't forget, spell casting and archery is not target-based. It will be much easier in FPV.  I never cast spells or shoot arrows in Oblivion in 3PV.

Well, the same can we say about BattleField.. it is a shooter, why do they pack in all these extra features like land, air, sea vehicles. It is not the vehicle comat, it is a shooter, why they waste so much extra energy?

Really simple, because it is something new, and it make a lot of fun. And the same for Darkfall, they want to offer a warfare mmorpg with all aspects, and this include naval combat, mounted combat, city siege, politics, economy and so on. This is by the way the main difference between Darkfall and the most other mmorpgs.
Other mmorpgs offers pvp(and just player vs. player and maybe group vs. group combat), but darkfall offers warfare.
