Best MMORPG of All Time

Okay, after hours (really 15 minutes with a 7 minute bathrom break) I've devised the best MMORPGs of all time. Now, to windle it down to the BEST MMORPG OF ALL TIME! Will it be EverQuest, which spawned the franchise? Or Phantasy Star Online, which got consol gamers into the MMORPG mix? Perhaps the cult-classic Ragnarok:Online? Or maybe the rookie contender Final Fantasy XI? Enough yapping, lets hear the people's voice!

None of those I am afraid. There has never been a best MMORPG of all time and there never will be. There is constant evolution in the gaming industry and honestly if you look at the life cycle of MMO's everyone seems to continue to make the same mistakes the previous publishers make and end up releasing poor unfinished games.
I personally doubt there will ever be a BEST MMORPG but this is just my opinion but I have played everything coming down the pipeline since pre EQ. EQ defined the MMORPG market and they have been a strong contender still to this day but their still not the best in my opinion. As soon as someone designs the ultimate game that we all go goo goo over we are bored and burnt out with it in 2 months tops and we want bigger, better, more!
Tough question to ask I am afraid good luck with responses though.

I think you are confusing "best" and "perfect". You are right, there are no perfect MMORPGs nor will there ever be, the genre is constantly evolving and something better will always come along.
And by the very point you made in your reply, his question is very answerable. You said the genre is constantly evolving, something better always comes along. Well, the definition of Best is something better than all the other options. So basically he's asking "In your opinion, which mmorpg that has been released is better than the rest of the released mmorpgs." Very easy question to answer for most people considering it's all opinion based.

EverQuest did not spawn MMOG gaming. Meridian59 was the first graphical MMOG, and UO was the first to gain mass appeal (Lineage on the Asian continent). EQ was just the first 3D MMOG.

Heh, EQ wasnt even that, merdidian 59 was 3d. And AC1 and EQ were released at the same time.

In my opinion AC1 is the best mmorpg game so far.
Played it for about 2,5 year and almost everyday.
But i get the dark and light beta tomorrow so maybe i will change my opinion soon
Ok.. there are a few problems with this poll. First of all you're missing Asheron's Call 1 & 2. Secondly Ragnarok Online shouldn't even be on this. If you are going leave this game on the list you should have added Lineage.
In any case, it terms of quality of the game, subscription support and longevity, it would have to go with either UO, AC, or EQ. I would have to go with EQ over the other 2 just for couple of reasons.
1) EQ has be out longer then AC1 and have more content overall.
2) Even though UO was the first, it's doesn't have the content of the other 2 games or the subscription size.
3) In terms of quality. All 3 games have their good and bad areas. They are pretty close to equal, which is why they are on the Top 5 list in terms of subscriptions in the U.S.
So if your going by the numbers, I'd say EQ. If your going by a person's preference, my favorite right now is FFXI.

If it were pure numbers, Lineage would win. But I think most people in here aren't Koreans. Since it's not pure numbers but opinion, I go with UO. It wasn't 3D. Didn't have the best graphics. What it did have was a gameplay that I enjoyed thoroughly until Tramel/Felucca.
I chose UO because that game has a much better gameplay than any other game I've played so far, CoH excluded.
UO just had everything and more options that a lot of these new games. The PvP combat was also pretty good.
Though I haven't played UO in years, I have nothing but good memories from that game. I was never bored in that game. It's really too bad that my hopes of which direction UO should head differed from EA's. Nevertheless, UO is still a great game that has a huge following all over the world.

BTW, what did you choose? Just curious.
If you mean revolutionize by allowing the way for repetitive boring clones, then ya, its done that, although I dont exactly consider that a good thing.

EQ paved the way for 3D MMORPGs. Otherwise UO still blows it away gameplay-wise. I remember when I spoke to a friend who was playing EQ and we started talking about crafting, he said "well, me and my brother made gold necklases." and I thought about the various crafting options in UO: alchemy, cooking, blacksmithy, tailoring, poisoning, mining, etc. I mean a person was able to make a very good living just by fishing in UO. Gold necklases? LMAO!
Plus UO has one of the best PvP systems out there still. Not to mention that the combat required a bit more skill than most MMORPGs out there.
You are mistaken if you think you can only craft necklases in EQ. There is tailoring, baking, smithing, jewelcraft, pottery, brewing, alchemy, fishing, making poisons and fletching.
I voted EQ, kept me occupied for 4 years.

Dark Age of Camelot - Realm vs Realm. Person vs Person.
-- Housing (For whichever game has the best housing)
-- Melee/Magic (for whichever game has the best of these)
There should be a poll stated off this because I believe that the BEST MMORPG ever has yet to be made.

I don't think anyone on these forums would actually consider funding me. But if so, and they want to see a design treament or a working design document and actually have money, let me know and we can see what I can come up with.
