Oddly I can't really find this on CoH web-site in any great detail, in their message boards or even here, though I doubt this question hasn't come up before.
I come from a history of table top super hero games. And Ive noticed that characters inevitably start to fall into the min-maxed groups of Brick, Blaster, Stealth, Brawler, manipulator or Speester, and short of the exceptional role players people do not wish to break this mold. Does any one know if CoH is falling into this trap or if they will take steps to encourage non-cookie cutter characters?
Anyway please don't lynch me for asking this. I am mostly curious and a relitive new comer to CoH.

CoH has developed archetypes. They're encouraging you to be creative, but for obvious game-balance reasons you cannot break the archetype. Otherwise you'd end up with an awesome blaster who can take major damage and that's just game-breaking.
So you can be a Scrapper, Tank, Blaster, Defender or Controller.
Check out Boxhead's great CoH site for all the info currently available: http://hometown.aol.com.au/Boxhead6177/Freelancer/MainIndex.htm
but it's also on the official site: http://coh.com/archetypes.html
