Going it alone

I really hope there is some degree of solo play in this game.  I know it was difficult if not impossible to do anything by yourself in FF XI and I hope that it wont be that way in CoH.  I mean I know that mmorpgs are supposed to be played with a group for the most part, but I think in this game it would make sense to have some sort of solo system available.  Maybe missions that required you to be by yourself when you do them.  I see it as a reward for being brave.  And as something to do when future CoH friends go to sleep and I'm still trying to stop an incoming meteor....

2 of the articles I read claim soloing gets difficult after lvl 10.  I'm hoping it's not true.  The biggest downfall for EQ is that soloing becomes virtualy impossible the higher your lvl (necros excluded of course).  Every MMORPG needs to have good solo potential because some times you just can't find a group.  There were times in EQ when it would take me over an hour to get a group only to have it break up again before we actualy do anything.  There are other times when you don't feel like grouping, like if you don't have much time but realy want to play.  When ever I would get stuck in a realy bad group I would go solo for the rest of the day out of frustration.

Thats exactly how it is in FFXI.   Its frustrating enough that I'm probably going to quit that game when this one comes out.  It seems like to me that a hero could do things like take out weak gangs by themselves and at least get some xp or something.  I mean even in a comic book sense...just look at Spider-Man.  I just htink it makes more sense to do like SWG and make missions depend on your own lvl or the lvl of your group.  That way you can always do things no matter what time you play.

You would think that they would allow people to solo in this game. I think there are more comic book heroes that are solo than there are that group.

Yeah I know what you mean about the single guy that ruins it for everyone.  Usually they are the ones who are supposed to tank but dont grab aggro or the healers that dont heal...And yes I also agree that this game should be made to facilitate both types of players because heroes do often go by themselves.  I plan on getting the cd preorder beta to try to test this out.  Would be nice if I could get the beta contest but by the sheer number of people involved I highly doubt it.

Interestingly enough, I watched (or read) an interview (sorry, fighting my NyQuil) stating that Cryptic understands that not all of us have hours on hours of time to play games, and plan on making it interesting for the "casual gamer," to the tune of relatively short missions for us on short play times.  However, on the opposite side of this coin, there will be missions involving multiple teams, taking up to 8-10 hours.  Thusly, accommodating to a proverbial "Pu Pu Platter" of gamers.

For the record, I dig soloing.  However, I am looking forward to the "Sidekick" feature for my (IRL) friends.  This way I avoid the slugs (like the AO Slugs who insist on standing on an exit button while fighting a boss, making it impossible to leave a room to heal... ugh) for the most part.  And If my sidekick gets out of line, I can whoop him/her in person.

Post Too long.  Sorry. (And pardon me for any grammatical errors etc.)

Thats good to know actually.  I mean I want the short missions in there on the probable chance of being by myself for a while...but I also want to experience the 8 hour battle against the super villain and his horde of underlings too.  Thanks for the info on the interview!

It's all going to depend on where your "virtually impossible to level" threshold is.

One of my current AO chars needs to do 3 or 4 missions to level solo, but when I group with my buddy, (a Meta and all his pets), I can do 1 level per mission.

3/1 is a good solo mission/level ratio for me. If it got lower than 5/1 for me it might meet the "virtually impossible to level" criteria. If it gets this low, I'm going to start concentrating on gameplay, and just be surprised image everytime a level comes up.image

DarkRuins I read the same thing.  The company said it would support soloers and groupers but I found 2 articles from people they invited to test the game that said it was very hard to solo after lvl 10.  However I have yet to find a bad review for the game, so I still expect it to be a great game.

    Imije,

In my opinion (which you should take with a load of salt), from the sounds coming from Cryptic, I believe that (assuming they don't change around the difficulty) even after lvl 10, there will be missions that are doable- just not as worth while as the missions before.  Again, There is no fact or statement supporting this, except for their motive to keep it simple.  Cryptic is trying very hard to get this game out into the open, beyond seasoned and even casual gamers.

    However, I could be wrong.
