Honestly?  The harvesting thing at level 10 IS pretty harsh and damn annoying.  It was half the reason I didn't pay for Ryzom when I tried it over a year ago because it happened out of no where and in a good hour of Ryzom research I found NOTHING to tell me why that happened, and next to me someone's harvesting as I just was while I die from an explosion; that, and the complete lack of people in the newbie areas.  The lacking refugee count certainly has improved since the I guess they would be the invasions, but the harvesting thing is VERY annoying.  With luck, I'd prospect two things and almost always get QL10, sometimes two in the same node, then I hit level 10 in harvest and I dropped to 8 and 9 average, assuming the node didn't die or explode or time didn't run out because its health/stability dropped 40% every extraction round.

This much SHOULD be changed.   The aspect should be there, but it's far too much far too soon, and it should be uncommon to actually have a node explode or die on you in the newb area.  It's rather aggrivating to level up only to suddenly be doing worse.  Gentle extraction is certainly a huge help (I'm getting 2 QL20 if I prospect most of the time on one node) but most newbies won't quite realize what the differences are, how significant they are, or worse not know they should take this as opposed to that and now have to deal with an aggrivating change for a level or two to build up the skill points needed.

I would also love to be told how the bloody hell root is supposed to work?  What's it do, because all it actually seems to be doing is freezing one enemy in place by freezing myself from anything.  It resists constantly, too.  The newb mission implied I should have been able to actually kill javings with root, and it suddenly completed when any time I tried, I'd have to switch to my melee weapon and fight that way.

Yeah that puzzled me as well. Actuelly the whole starting area frustrated me alot with harvesting. I enjoy it much better on the mainland after I got up to 45 to 50 skill in it and was able to add a bit of range, angle and number of nodes found to it.

Root is a link spell. With link spells you need to stay still and not start casting another spell or it will wear off soon after. It lets you get in maybe another blast spell if it isn't resisted before the enemy closes to melee. It is at it's most effective if too magic users are duo hunting though. Magic is also one of those skill lines that really benefits from editing your attack spells. Having a blast that can only be fired point blank but with no time to cast credit needed to balance that out can be really handy.

For the mission it's just keeping track of how many you kill (need 10) not how you kill them.

Harvesting IS hard in the beginning but it too WILL get much, much better later if you learn more options.

It gets quite enjoyable, belive me You just need a bit of patience and of course experience.

And yes, "root" is a supportive spell.

If you hit a MOB with it It´ll be frozen for a few moments and you´ll be able to hit it with damage, then again with root and again with damage. If you´ve judeged the distance to the mob correctly it´ll never reach you

And of course 2 people will have a much easier time killing stuff.

One thing though, the counter in some Missions will sometimes stop and not show the countdown, It´ll keep counting  nonetheless so don´t worry. It just won´t show the numbers. (just a little bug that will hopefully soon be fixed)

Ryzom, we dare to be different.
    Do you dare to adapt?

The root mission had no counter, just told me to kill Javings.  It was the weened rendors that had the broken countdown.  I haven;t played since getting to 20 in everything except harvesting, so I guess I should do the last quests soon, so I don't know about those if they're bugged or not.

Those missions aren't, the one countdown that is buged is the weened rendors one. although the root javings one could really do with a countdown being added to it.
