So i see there is a lot of people that seem to dislike this game, and i wonder why?
Anyway, I'm considering trying this game out(the free trail)
Never ever played any kind of D&D beside NWN2(got a trail CD-key with the CD from nwn2).
So i wonder what i should expect from a game like this? I've tried a bounce of mmo's on the market, and i wonder if D&D Online stands out from the masses?
What do you dislike and what do you like about the game?
Have the game become any better by any updates lately?
How is the population of players?

Well ... there are pages and pages about that here. Read on.

The differences are: (1) you only gain experience from completing quests, (2) the quests are all instanced and (3) much of the content is hard/impossible to complete solo (although they have altered it somewhat to make it more solo friendly recently).
What do you dislike and what do you like about the game?
I like the dungeon design, which is among the best available. The devs spent a lot of time designing interesting dungeons with traps and puzzles and so forth, and it's distinctive from the typical design. I like the graphics as well, very sharp and well-rendered, and the game runs smoothly. I like the Eberron setting as well, although many D&D fans do not like that setting, and would have preferred a more "classic" D&D setting (yet another odd design decision by the devs).
What I do not like is that everything is instanced. There is very little sense of a virtual world because all of the quests are in instances. There's no place you can just go to hunt for a bit, there's no place you can casually come across another player while they are in a fight and toss them a heal or buff or whatever. There's no crafting system, no housing system. In all, it's a very stripped down game when compared to other MMOs, and very focused only on instance quests, which to me is rather limiting for this kind of genre.
Have the game become any better by any updates lately?
They recently introduced a patch with new content, an increased level cap, and PvP. Lack of content has been an issue since day one, and this addresses that to a certain degree, but there's still a general lack of content compared to other mainstream MMOs like WoW or EQ2, for example. They've recently introduced an auction house as well.
How is the population of players?
It bobs up and down. The servers are fairly well populated, but in no way crowded like you see in WoW, for example. There are more people around lately due to the recent content patch, and I suspect more people are trying it out while WoW is in limbo pending the release of the WoW expansion in January, but it's at best a low end medium pop game. Although it's D&D, the way the game is designed, it is a niche game for those who like 100% iinstances. Trouble with that design is thath Guild Wars follows the same design (alebit with different content ... fewer dungeons and more open zones) and doesn't charge a sub fee, and people inevitably compare the two and ask why they should be paying a fee for a game that is similar to one that is free. It's something that will always dog DDO, I think, because of the design decisions that were made with the game.
had a blast playing it, the above poster explained how the game works
very well so I will only repeat what he said if I explain by myself. So
I will tell you my personal experience playing it; Well at first I did
not like the game because If you are a solo player the game just sucks,
Doing the quests by yourself is pretty boring, so after doing the
newbie quests in the island and in the tavern I went "LFG" And In like
2 minutes, a construct named "Maji" whispered to me telling me if I
wanted to join her party to do all the starter quests and I accepted
and Wow... No game in years kept me hours sitting in my PC the team
co'op is just awesome as a rogue I was the only one who can see and
detect traps and hidden doors so my duty was that alerting the players
when a trap is near, disabling them, etc. I think that if you have a
group, is the FIRST game that I ever played in which you do not have to
be a overpower fighter to succed... So what else can I say to you
just try it and post your experiences ^^.
