He is either extraordinarily tired or he's just been in Southern California too long.
Those developers sound like they would rather get shot than spend another second talking about their product.
It's better be hated for who you are, than loved for who you aren't.
If the two producers sound tired, I can forgive that. I imagine producing a massive game like this would make anyone tired. It might also be that nerdy gamers and developers (I use 'nerdy' affectionately, as we're all nerds) have dull-sounding voices.. who knows?
But, fair enough, I'm looking for something beyond the usual 'phat lewtz' experience, and watching that user rotate and fiddle that sword and candlestick around their house just made me all gooey inside.
For me, as long as the combat system is functional and interactive, then I'm not much bothered about the rest of the combat system. It's the rest I care about - the community possibilities, the RP, the potential for just sitting about and doing sod all apart from chatting to guildies and messing around with my house.
Yeh, this is a minor quibble though. If it's a real bother, you can always move your character closer to the NPC mob, then your 'suspension of disbelief' is undamaged.
When they get better/sufficient server performance, I'd expect this distance to go down a good deal, to be in-line with the more realistic look and feel of the game.
Man I am getting excited about this title.
Now playing: VG (after a long break from MMORPGS)
Played for more than a month: Darkfall online, Vanguard SOH, Everquest, Horizons, WoW, SWG, Everquest II, Eve
I'm one of those that has not been excited about this game because I spent too many years with the dreaded corpse-run in EQ. However, I do try just about every game that comes out and this video really does help soften my hopes for this game. Unlike the other videos that are teasers with loud music showing a character moving through the world, this type of video with narration, showing and describing the features, I find do much more to sell me on a game. Character creation for me is extremely important. I hate all the korean games coming out where everyone is basically wearing the same head. I loved seeing the CC in this vid. It was good to actually see the variety of ships and customization. It was good to hear a devloper say "dyeable".
Much of what what they talked about is just reapeated information of what one can read on the game's site, however the only people reading that site are those with an interest. Putting a video out like this gets this information out to people who haven't been to the site, haven't been that interested and it sparks some initiative for a consumer to look deeper.
The cinematic trailers are a dime a dozen. A video like this that is informative is a boon to marketing the game.
Interesting! I just might try this game after all!!
A Horse @ lvl 10.. Woot Even! Hehe
I like almost everything I saw but, the UI. Please tell me that it will NOT be 'WideScreen'd'? I like my UI's full screen.
Now, must go to their site and start reading about everything on this upcoming game.
Good Luck Dev's.. So far - So good for me.
"Huntress"
Good presentation. It was fun to hear brad's voice finally. Hehe. I used to be part of Sojourn MUD community with him years ago. I especially liked the part about ship exploration (not just travel) and housing and crafting and customization for both. The fly over of the large dungeon fortress was amazing too. It looks so artistic. This game apeals to my artistic tastes in what I want to see in a game. World of Warcraft is the complete opposite of what I want to see while I am playing.
It will be very interesting to see how they will include a full scale dungeon as part of a landscape. I can imagine the appeal of being a lowbie character that works his way closer and closer to the grand walls of the dungeon fortress but not being able to survive going inside. One day when you have trained enough, you can go inside but probably not do very well. Through further character training and player skill you can eventually explore all of its depths and perhaps master it, even as a solo player, maybe? I enjoyed this aspect of Everquest 1 and look forward to seeing how they can 1-up themselves with Vanguard.
I am sorry i see nothing new here starting off yes its daoc done up ahh nice and pretty the combat well i havent played it no comment
the world looks alot like lineage2/daoc this game will do well people will enjoy it couse people enjoy lineage2 and daoc
the boats daoc
the horses daoc
the houses daoc style
the fighting system looks like nge
the dungon reminds me of lineage 2
gonna have castle seiges like lineage 2 ?? (they were fun)
only great point was the 2 hour point which i liked does that mean you dont have to start over or pop back into a full room ???
You want loot? Go kill some npcs, you wanna visit hades? come find ME, and dont forget to bring coins for the ferryman,
I'm assuming you mean where they talk about a party being able to do a couple of hours in a dungeon, log out, then come back at a later date to do more?
If that is what you meant then he mentioned logging out in 'safe' areas, so essentially the answer to your question is yes. You won't log into a room full of agg happy mobs and you shouldnt have to repeat parts that you have already passed. Hope that answers your question.
Hehe, I agree with the first couple of posts, Brad does sound a bit boring/tired. Felt like burning my arm with my ciggie a few times to keep myself from falling asleep.
Game looks nice I have to say. If I can convince a few friends to hop over to the game and give it a shot for a couple of months then I'll probably give it a sub to experience it.
When you have a large custamizable character, ships, etc... and it's all on a non-loading large area well lag...
Playing SWG I would notice when you got a large group of people in an area just the loading of all the diffrent customized charecters alone would cause quite a bit of lag. But say in FFXI there are very few customizations you can do and the lag is noticiblly less and I have noticed this with other MMO's. not just the 2 I mentioned.
Ya I know this isn't SWG or FFXI engines persay but when practicly everything is customizable and to top it off it's all on one non-stop world will lag become a factor this day in age? Or sense it's a 6km viewing distance is there what I would assume a type of "Silent load" rendering objects within that range and de-rendering objects (dropping from memory) things which go outside the range as you move around?
I'm honestly just looking for info not saying one way or the other or trying to start a flame war going, just trying to find out some facts about an area I'm not too familliar with when it comes to rendering and memory concerns wich in turn can cause lag.
Wow.
Vanguard looks amazing, I'm not sure if it was the video's encoding making the framerate so bad in some areas, but i hope i dont need a 10000$ pc to be able to run it smoothly but still look good.
I kinda agree with the comment about the combat, I'm sick of seeing crap where you swing a sword from 3 feet away, and it hit the oppnent, I mean, combat is what 99% of yoru exp gain is going to come from, so why not spend the most amount of time making it purely enjoyable? I agree tho if theres lag issues and stuff then i don't blame them for going that route.
I'm also a huge Magic The Gathering fan, and it uses alot of amazing design principals(ie. Beatdown/Combo/Control achetypes) what would go amazing into an MMORPG, so i'm totally psyched by them being inspired by that. And we'll see alot more differientation between characters because of it. Maybe we'll see a very versatile ranger, or a wizard that can combo off a few spells to nuke a whole room.
They didnt mention it, but is houseing going to be like SWG Where people can plant the house where they want it and will there be player towns and cities? Will players get to craft the houses? I don't really like EQ2's idea of player housing. If i find a nice spot while im exploring and want to put my house there, it'll just mean that much more to me.
I can't wait for vanguard tho
They talk like that because they are nerds. That IS their
excited voices.
lol

Thats not lag, thats performance.
Lag = Network
Performance = your computers set up, and its ability to render the game.

I think if anything, this is a nice awakening for all future MMO's to come. I rarely see videos like this done when promoting or trying to get information out to a community. Usually people need to spend countless hours looking at FAQ's and poorly organized forums. A lot of games have released videoes, but developer commentary is really the icing on the cake. A+ video, I definitely have this game in mind for Q1 '07 releases (along with GnH!).
1. graphics are nothing like DaoC, DaoC had cartooney graphicc.
2. Boats like DaoC ? Free roaming, where you can walk around on yuor own boats and travel anywehre in a vast ocean ?
3. Horses like DaoC ? Last time I played they were taxis, guessing that changed, but thats not exactly DaoC original
4.Houses in DaoC were instanced which made them just money sinks. Vanguard housing is part of the main world, and as they said the economy, which should be familiar to any UO player.
5. Fighting system is like any western game pretty much, except this one looks hirribly unpolished.
7. L2 had very good graphics so its not a bad comparison, except the many features they show makes Vanguard dungeons better (on paper and looking at)
8. hopefully
9. yes that is a nice thing.
It's better be hated for who you are, than loved for who you aren't.
LOL
Kidding.
VSOH looks simply awsome !!

I remember reading ""the combat is not whack-a-mole" on the Vanguard forums...
Then I got in beta...
Its whack-a-mole
Of all that is written, I love only what a person has written with his own blood. -Nietzsche
Anyone who says they are in beta and willingly breaks and NDA is a liar to begin with, you happen to also be a known troll. Just making sure people who might not know, know.
If you're reading this, please describe whack-a-mole combat for those of us who don't know what that means.
See enemy, hit attack, repeat attack in order of strongest to weakest. Enemy dies or you die. Basically I think that sums up whack a mole. Which I highly doubt Vanguard is. If you've played CoH at any point youd know that there games which arent whack a mole.
The one thing that will have me playing this game is ships. I was a sea capitan in Uo for many years and I miss it! Not to mention they have asian inspired Dhows. Wow talk about fullfulling a dream! I sure hope they have sea based fishing!
