Well, FFXI is *very* different from WoW, and if you've found WoW too easy, you might like FFXI; FFXI is much more of a challenge.
On the other hand, you might not. FFXI is a very different beast.
To start with, there's no PvP. Oh, there's Ballista and Brenner, but these take place in their own little arenas. Out in the general world, there's no PvP at all. None.
Second of all, you *will* group. You'll solo your way to 10 or 12, but after that advancement gets very difficult except as part of a party. Expect to spend some time with your looking for party flag up. As a good note, the job system in FFXI keeps you going back to level new jobs (the job system allows you to pick up any job, but each one levels separately), so even at low levels finding other people your level is not impossible, in spite of the game's age. I personally like this aspect. I like the challenge of coordinating effectively with a party, and FFXI serves this up better than any other MMORPG I know, with several mechanics that reward effective cooperation in a party (most notably the weaponskill-chain-and -magic-burst system). There are a lot of things you can do solo, but there's lots of things you *can't* do solo, including, for the most part, levelling.
I should note that there's a fairly harsh death penalty, generally about 10% of the exp needed to get from the beginning of your last level to the beginning of your next level (In levels 1 through 3, there is no penalty). Getting raised by healers can reduce this penalty substantially, but it can't be eliminated. If the penalty is sufficient to reduce your exp below the amount needed for your current level, you will delevel (the game score gives you a particularly depressing "blaaat" when you level down...). Unlike WoW, avoiding death in FFXI really means something.
Over all, FFXI is not about instant satisfaction. There's a lot of things in this game that are a long haul, nor is generally a good idea to look for short cuts or try to rush things. Expect to spend months getting to 75 even if you concentrate on it and spend a lot of time in the game. It also pays to do a little research on webpages like somepage or allakhazam. But you do get a big feeling of accomplishment when you get somewhere, too.
