Doubtfull.
Most likely they rent them.
Also there is a difference to owning the intellectual propertywright/copywright to a game and owning the game. Everyone who bought the game owns the game. Only Blizzard owns the right to reproduce and make profit from it.
Seriously did you actually read what you typed?
With all the money Blizzard makes every month they would choose to rent?
BTW you dont own the game if you have the software. You only purchased the client that enables you to play the game on Blizzard owned/rented servers. Implyingownership is like saying WoW has player created content. Not 1 single player actually owns any part of the game. They payed to install the client on their own PC.
Of course Blizzard rent. They rent from data centres around the world. They don't buy data centres around the world. That would not be cost efficient.
If you bought it, you own it. You own all of it except the copywright and the serverside software. You own the gameclient and any character you created with it. Since you rent the server and the gameservice, you have ownerships/tenants rights to that also for as long as your subscription is current.
You do not own the Intellectual propertywright/copywright. You have no rights to reproduce and distribute or use the code to make a new product without Blizzards permission.
Ownership is not defined by who created/manfactured the product. My car does not belong to Lexus. My book does not belong to J.K. Rowlings, my house does not belong to the brickies. When you sell something, you transfer ownership. When you rent something, you temporarily transfer ownership. Your Television belongs to you not Sony, your Star Wars DVD belongs to you not George lucas.
Blizzard sold the client and rents the service. They own neither. They own the rights to make profit from it and they manage it on their clients behalf.

Let me guess your a gold farmer too right?
You dont own a character in WoW that has been demonstrated over and over again with Blizzard and it bannings. If you owned it they couldnt ban you now could they?Oh and it would be perfectly fine to sell a level 60 character with epic armor too.
Yeah and im sure Lucas would just love it if everyone took the Starwars movies and copied them on DvD and just sold them on Ebay.
Until you pay off that loan on your house you dont really own it.the mortgage company ALLOWS you to live in it until you pay off the loan or you default and go into foreclosure.
Ownership and tenant rights dont apply to a game mmo or not go read the eula.
Read Article # 3:Particularly the part where it says:Including without limitation.
Personally my favorite part is the responsibilities of the end user.
The WoW eula states in a nutshell that you can pay to play on their servers rented or otherwise but you as a customer dont own your character as it is Blizzards intellectual property exclusivley.
In article 3 they even throw in "moral Rights".Part 9 is interesting as well.
The eula is saying in no uncertain terms that you as a paying customer have 1 right:To play the game the way Blizzard wants you to play it.You cant sell anything as you dont own it.
If you did own your character you could farm gold all day long now couldnt you?

Once again please note. I'm not in the guild or have any affiliation whatsoever with it.
The issue is not about the guild and nowhere in my post have I argued that they didn't deserve what they got. I was trying to point out that Blizzard pretty much uses a ban as the only solution without giving much thought to alternatives, which is their right of course. But with a game as big as WoW setting precedents may have further consequences and Blizzard goes on banning and banning. I wish the system was more flexible and there could be some voice given to the player in making decisions.
In a case like this I believe that majority of players would have supported the ban. But in the future more ambigous cases may emerge and there needs to be more discussion and dialogue on the issues.
Please read the posts carefully and THINK before you rain down rightous fury that has nothing to do with the issues I'm trying to discuss here.

Some people have been banned from WoW for very questionable reasons. Do some research. Read back a few messages on the WoW forums here and look for cases where people have been unjustly banned. Your case could be made alot stronger.
Personally I don't have alot of problem with companies being dictators of the current crop of MMOs. If they make too many stupid decisions and ban too many innocents then they will just be giving money away to their competitors. Shrug.
There may be a problem in the longer term future if MMOs develop into more than just games, but become virtual worlds where people have a higher level of commitment (cf cyberpunk style vitual realities.) Then a dictator may be a problem. But we are currently a long way from that situation.
Indeed. I agree with most of your points.
I am interested in better examples though. Can you provide some?

Thanks for the update. If this is really the case then I'm glad they were able to do that. Where did you get this data?

It's not any different than any other game. Cheaters get busted and banned. Get over it.
Make a difference!
