It's essentially a single player game with mutliplayer component. So no, you don't have to pay a monthly fee, but yes you can connect to other people's computer or server running a game and play on it.

Yep, you have to run the game on server mode and you act as the DM (Dungeon Master). You can either use the default modules or create your very own custom world.
I would hold my purchase of NWN2 for at least few good months.
It was very bugged at release, and to be honest right now there is problems with multiplayer.
If i was you , i would go and buy me NWN1 Platinum edition - it is dead cheap right now - And it has very established multiplayer (something NWN2 would have to wait years to acheve)

Dunno, i got my copy and my wife at release date, there was a patch out immediatly and i have been playing with her multiplayer since then. problems? i crashed once in a few days and there are issues with technical performances (no way a game that looks at best average like this should work as slowly as it does on my system that run oblivion with no problems or glitches at almost max details...).
But beside that, it is way better than the first one.
I do not think is gonna take years for good multiplayer servers cropping up, but some months, prolly. And hopefully some better technical performance later on.
Also for some reason they removed the ability of sorcerers and bards to switch out spells at level up.... pretty odd considering you could do it in the NWN1 while the rules prohibited it. Now the 3.5 D&D rules ALLOWS sorcerers and bards to switch off spells at certain levels, but the game doesn't.... maybe it is a bug.

Errr...I've had no problem switching out spells for my npc sorcerer in game so far. Remember though that you can only switch a single one per levelup.

You can switch some spells starting at level 6 but you can only switch spells that are 3 casting levels below. The rule in NWN1 is the wrong one, the correct rules are used in NWN2.
